If ARK: Survival Ascended reports “Failed to Install Mod” when you join a map, first determine which layer failed: the mod may be deleted, the server may list the wrong project, your local files may be damaged, or the download path may be blocked. Check the server’s exact mod IDs before deleting anything. A client cannot download a project that no longer exists, and only the server owner can correct a broken dependency.

Work through the least-destructive checks below in order. The in-game installer is the supported way to obtain ASA mods; the CurseForge desktop application is not supported for ASA mod installation.

What “Failed to Install Mod” means
The message is a routing symptom rather than a single diagnosis. The game has been told that a map or server requires a mod, but the required project could not be obtained, validated, or loaded. The failure can occur in four places:
- Availability: the project was deleted, hidden, or replaced, so its ID no longer resolves.
- Server configuration: the host still advertises an obsolete or incorrect mod ID.
- Client installation: local mod files or metadata are incomplete or corrupted.
- Network path: a VPN, proxy, firewall, unstable connection, or unreachable download server interrupts retrieval.
This explains why an unmodded server can work while one particular map fails: the working server does not request the unavailable or damaged dependency. In one Official ARK forum case, a fresh installation worked without mods, while a deleted CurseForge project (ID 941658) caused the affected server to fail. That is a useful diagnostic pattern, not proof that every error has the same cause.
#1 Best Overall
- ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
- Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
- ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
- Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
- Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!
Responsibility also depends on where the failure appears. CurseForge directs in-game installation issues to Studio Wildcard’s support forum, while problems with a private server’s mod list belong with the server owner or hosting provider.
Identify the failure layer before changing files
| Symptom or check | Likely layer | Who can fix it | Risk of the remedy | Evidence strength |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A required mod ID cannot be found when searched | Availability or server dependency | Server owner | None for the player; changing local files cannot help | Strong: confirmed by the deleted-mod case |
| Only one private server fails; other modded servers work | Server configuration or a server-specific dependency | Server owner or host | Low for the player | Strong diagnostic pattern, but not universal |
| Mod appears in Browse mods but will not install | Client files, storage, or network | Player | Low until local data is removed | Official checks available |
Download remains at 0% or reports serverUnreachable |
Network path or remote availability | Player first; host if the project is unavailable | Low | Official VPN/proxy warning; community log is anecdotal |
| Server map-mod installation fails after the host changes mods | Server installation or load order | Server owner or host | Low for the player; server downtime is possible | Host guidance |
Do not begin by deleting every local mod. That can erase useful diagnostic information and creates extra downloads. Establish whether the requested project still exists first.

Step 1: Record and verify the server’s required mod IDs
Ask for the current list
Ask the server owner for the exact, current mod IDs shown in the server configuration. Record the server name, map, and every ID before attempting repairs. A display name is not enough: similarly named projects can have different IDs.
Search each ID
- Open ARK: Survival Ascended and use the game’s mod browser, or search the ID on the project’s CurseForge listing.
- Confirm that each ID resolves to a live project and that the project supports the map and game version you are running.
- If an ID no longer resolves, send that result to the server owner. The owner must remove the deleted dependency or replace it with a supported project, then restart or reload the server.
Reinstalling your client cannot retrieve a deleted project. If the server continues advertising the obsolete ID, every affected player can receive the same installation error.

Step 2: Install ASA mods through the supported in-game path
Studio Wildcard and CurseForge identify in-game installation as the supported ASA workflow. The CurseForge desktop app does not support installing ARK: Survival Ascended mods.
- Start ARK: Survival Ascended.
- Choose Mods list.
- Accept the terms when prompted.
- Open Browse mods and select the required project.
- Click Install and wait for the download and validation to finish.
- Open Mod settings → Available mods, select the project, and activate it.
- Confirm that it appears under Active mods before joining the server.
If the server browser identifies missing dependencies, you can also select the modded server and click Join. ASA opens a required-mods window and can install the missing items from that flow. This is often safer than manually guessing which projects a server uses.
If the install button does nothing
- Check whether the project page loads and shows a current version.
- Cancel duplicate or stalled downloads, restart the game, and try one mod at a time.
- Make sure the project is not already partially installed under a different version or duplicate entry.
Step 3: Check storage and the Windows baseline
Studio Wildcard’s 2023 Windows support table lists 16 GB RAM minimum, 32 GB recommended, DirectX 12, broadband Internet, an SSD, and 70 GB of available space. These are game requirements, not a guarantee that a particular mod will install; individual projects can require additional temporary download and extraction space.
- Verify the drive containing ASA has at least 70 GB free, plus headroom for the mod’s compressed download and unpacked files.
- Confirm the game is installed on an SSD. If the drive is nearly full, move other files or install the game and mods on a larger SSD before retrying.
- On Windows, update the graphics driver and DirectX components through your normal system-maintenance path if the game itself also crashes or fails to launch.
Console menus and storage behavior differ from Windows. Use the same availability and in-game installation checks, but follow the platform’s own storage-management screen rather than deleting PC folders.

Step 4: Verify the game files in Steam
On the Windows PC version, use Steam’s file verification before removing local mod data:
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click ARK: Survival Ascended and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and let the process complete.
- Restart Steam and ASA, then retry the mod installation from Mods list → Browse mods.
Wildcard notes that some files may fail verification because they are local configuration files. Those expected configuration-file differences can be ignored; investigate only if Steam reports substantive game files being reacquired and the installation still fails afterward.

Step 5: Remove network blockers and test the download path
Use a clean connection
Wildcard specifically warns that VPN and proxy connections can cause ARK server connection issues. Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy, restart the game, and retry. If possible, use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for the download and avoid other large transfers while testing.
Interpret a stalled download
A progress bar fixed at 0% does not distinguish between a blocked route and an unavailable project. If the log contains serverUnreachable, record it with the time and mod ID. A 2026 community log associated that message with a failed download, and one commenter attributed the failure to a VPN; treat that report as anecdotal rather than a universal diagnosis.

- Restart your router or switch briefly to another trusted connection to see whether the same ID can be reached.
- Allow Steam and ASA through your operating system firewall when prompted; do not permanently disable security software as a first-line fix.
- If every player fails on the same mod while unrelated downloads work, ask the owner to confirm the project is available and the host can reach it.
Step 6: Refresh local mod data only after backing up
Deleting local data is a community workaround, not a Studio Wildcard-published first step. Use it only after recording required IDs, confirming the projects exist, checking storage, verifying Steam files, and removing VPN or proxy routing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Close ASA and Steam completely.
- Back up your single-player saves, server configuration, and any settings you cannot recreate. Do not rely on memory for save locations or load orders.
- Locate the ASA installation’s
ModsandModsUserDatadirectories. - Rename them (for example, append
.backup) rather than permanently deleting them. Renaming preserves a recovery copy while forcing ASA to create clean folders. - Start Steam and run Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files again.
- Launch ASA, reinstall only the required projects through Mods list → Browse mods, and activate them under Mod settings → Available mods.
If the clean folders solve the problem, keep the backups until you have confirmed that your saves, load order, and server settings are intact. If the error returns for the same ID, stop repeating the cleanup and recheck project availability or the server’s dependency list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Have the server host reload a map mod
When the failure belongs to a private server’s map mod, the player cannot repair the host’s installation. Nitrado’s guidance is to stop the server, reload the map mod according to that project’s installation instructions, and restart the server. Contact the host’s support team if the reload still fails.
Information the owner should verify
- The configured ID is the project’s current ID, not a deleted or similarly named replacement.
- The map mod is installed in the order and location required by its author.
- The server is fully stopped before files or mod settings are changed.
- The server is restarted only after the host reports a completed reload.
Players should wait for the owner’s confirmation before repeatedly clearing their own installations. A bad server list can make every clean client fail in exactly the same way.
Escalate with evidence instead of repeating the same reinstall
Choose the contact based on the failing layer. CurseForge separates in-game installation failures, which belong in Studio Wildcard’s support forum, from server-mod problems, which belong with Nitrado or the relevant private-server host.
Include this evidence
- Platform and edition (Windows PC, Xbox, or PlayStation).
- Server name, map, and whether it is official or privately hosted.
- Every required mod ID supplied by the owner.
- The exact on-screen error text, including whether the download stopped at 0%.
- Whether an unmodded server or a fresh no-mod installation works.
- Whether the project page resolves in the in-game browser.
- The relevant log line, such as
serverUnreachable, with the approximate time it occurred. - Which official checks you completed: storage, Steam verification, and VPN/proxy removal.
This evidence lets support distinguish a deleted dependency from a client cache problem or a temporary route failure, instead of sending you through the same steps again.
Fixes ranked by safety and responsibility
| Action | Actor | What it tests | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Confirm current mod IDs and search for each project | Player and server owner | Deleted or unavailable dependency | Fully reversible; no local changes |
| Install from the in-game Mods list or required-mods window | Player | Supported client download path | Reversible |
| Check SSD space and the 70 GB baseline | Player | Storage and extraction capacity | Reversible |
| Verify Steam files | Player | Damaged or missing game files | Reversible; configuration-file notices may be normal |
| Disable VPN or proxy and test a stable connection | Player | Blocked network route | Fully reversible |
Rename Mods and ModsUserData after backup |
Player | Corrupt local mod metadata | Reversible only if backups are retained |
| Stop, reload, and restart the map mod | Server owner or host | Host-side installation or load order | May cause planned downtime |
When each common symptom points elsewhere
“I can join unmodded servers, but not this one”
Prioritize the private server’s dependency list. Ask for current IDs and check whether one project was deleted or replaced. A working unmodded server proves that the base game can connect; it does not validate the failing server’s mod configuration.
“The mod download stops at 0%”
Check project availability, disable VPN or proxy routing, test a stable connection, and record any serverUnreachable log entry. Do not assume that 0% means your installation is corrupt.
“The server says I need a mod that will not install”
Compare the server’s exact ID with the project found in ASA’s browser. If no project resolves, only the owner can remove or replace the dependency. If it resolves for other players, continue with storage, Steam verification, and network checks on your client.
