Start with the crash point, platform, and whether the problem began after an update or after enabling Creations or mods. On PC, check Weapon Debris and verify the game files; on Xbox or PlayStation, first isolate Creations and restart the console. Save deletion and mod-data clearing are not the same thing: follow the platform-specific save cautions below before reinstalling or clearing data.
Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the crash
Note when the crash happens: immediately after selecting Play, during a loading screen, or while playing. Then consider whether Fallout 4 recently updated or whether you added or enabled Creations or mods. These clues help narrow the first steps; they do not by themselves prove the cause.
| Platform | Crash timing or clue | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| PC | During play; Weapon Debris is High or Ultra | Set Weapon Debris to Medium or Off in the launcher options. Bethesda identifies High and Ultra as settings associated with a crash issue. Bethesda PC troubleshooting |
| PC | Crash after clicking Play or at launch | Use the launch-specific checks below, including trying to run the game as administrator. Bethesda launch troubleshooting |
| Xbox | Crash after an update or with Creations enabled | Disable or remove Creations and retest; after updates, some may need to be updated by their creators. Bethesda Xbox troubleshooting |
| PlayStation | Any crash, especially before checking for updates | Install the latest game update, then close and restart the game. Bethesda says an update on November 25, 2025 resolved several issues that may have caused PlayStation crashes. Bethesda PlayStation troubleshooting |
Fix Fallout 4 crashes on PC
If it crashes during play
- Lower Weapon Debris. Open the Fallout 4 launcher options and set Weapon Debris to Medium or Off if it is High or Ultra. Bethesda identifies those higher settings as a known crash trigger. See Bethesda’s PC steps.
- Check requirements and graphics drivers. Compare your PC with the game’s system requirements and update the graphics driver using the GPU maker’s driver source. Bethesda recommends both checks. Bethesda PC troubleshooting.
- Test without Creations. Disable or remove them, then launch and play long enough to see whether the crash returns. If the issue stops, re-enable items selectively to isolate a possible conflict.
- Verify or repair game files in the launcher you use. The exact UI path depends on the launcher. Bethesda notes that one or more files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files, so a failed verification result alone does not prove the installation is corrupt. Bethesda PC troubleshooting.
- Remove Steam launch options temporarily. If custom launch options are set in Steam, clear them and retest; Bethesda warns that some can cause crashes. Restore only options you need, one at a time.
- Update DirectX. Bethesda recommends installing the latest DirectX version. Bethesda PC troubleshooting.
If it crashes immediately after clicking Play or while loading
Try these symptom-specific checks after the general steps, rather than changing every setting at once:
- For a crash immediately after clicking Play, try launching Fallout 4 as administrator. Bethesda’s launch-specific guidance.
- If you edited INI configuration files, restore your prior versions or reset the listed files to their default configuration. Keep a backup before replacing edited files. Bethesda discusses INI and borderless-window troubleshooting for crashes on the “Please Stand By…” screen. Bethesda’s “Please Stand By…” troubleshooting.
- Try borderless window mode if the crash is associated with the “Please Stand By…” screen. This is a targeted follow-up, not a universal fix. Bethesda’s “Please Stand By…” troubleshooting.
Fix Fallout 4 crashes on Xbox
- Disable or remove Creations and retest. A recent game update can leave Creations or add-ons not working correctly until their creators update them; Bethesda notes these can contribute to crashes or visual issues. Bethesda Xbox troubleshooting.
- Power cycle the console. Hold the front Xbox button for 10 seconds, unplug the console for 10 seconds, reconnect it, then restart. Bethesda Xbox troubleshooting.
- If mods prevent the game from launching, clear Fallout 4 Reserved Space only when needed. Reserved Space contains mod data, not your actual save files. Bethesda cautions users not to delete actual saves when clearing Reserved Space. Bethesda’s console mod-loading guidance.
- Reinstall only after trying less disruptive steps. Uninstall the game itself and do not select or delete save files. Bethesda says the game can then be installed again from the library or game disc. Bethesda Xbox troubleshooting.
Fix Fallout 4 crashes on PlayStation
- Update the game fully. Bethesda Support says an update on November 25, 2025 resolved several issues that may have caused PlayStation crashes. Confirm the installed game has the update. Bethesda PlayStation troubleshooting.
- Close and restart Fallout 4. If that does not help, power cycle the console rather than relying on Rest Mode. Bethesda PlayStation troubleshooting.
- Disable or delete Creations to test for a mod-related crash. If the game works without them, add them back selectively to identify a possible culprit.
- Reinstall the game if needed. Bethesda says deleting and reinstalling the game does not delete game saves; its guidance also describes backing up saves online through system settings. Check your console’s save-backup settings before making changes. Bethesda PlayStation troubleshooting.
- Try launching offline if the crash continues. Bethesda lists this as a later troubleshooting step. Bethesda PlayStation troubleshooting.
Protect saves before clearing data or reinstalling
Distinguish game installation data, mod data, and save files before confirming any deletion prompt. On Xbox, Reserved Space is mod data; Bethesda specifically warns against deleting actual saves when clearing it. For an Xbox reinstall, uninstall Fallout 4 itself and leave save files untouched. On PlayStation, Bethesda says reinstalling the game does not delete saves, and describes online save backup in system settings. If a prompt names saved data rather than the game or Reserved Space, stop and verify what it will remove before proceeding.

If the crash still happens
- Retest after one change at a time so you can tell which step helped.
- For crashes that began after an update, test without Creations before pursuing more disruptive fixes; creators may need to update affected content.
- On PC, separate launch failures from in-game crashes: Weapon Debris is a targeted in-game check, while administrator launch and INI/window-mode checks address particular startup or loading symptoms.
- Do not infer a universal cause from the symptom alone. Bethesda’s support guidance describes several possible settings, file, driver, and mod-related issues, but does not provide a statistical breakdown of crash causes.
