The “Fortnite has crashed” message is a generic crash report, not a diagnosis. Start with the low-risk fixes: restart Windows, check Epic’s service status, verify Fortnite’s files, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache, disable overlays, and test DirectX 11 if you currently use DirectX 12. Reinstall Fortnite or investigate hardware only after those steps fail.
First, identify what is actually crashing
A normal Crash Reporter dialog means Fortnite terminated unexpectedly. It does not automatically mean the game is defective, your graphics card is too old, or your PC needs more RAM.

Different symptoms require different fixes:
- Fortnite alone closes: begin with game files, launcher data, rendering mode, drivers, and background software.
- The PC freezes, reboots, shows a blue screen, or loses power: investigate Windows, drivers, temperatures, memory stability, power delivery, and hardware.
- A black screen appears and the display driver resets: prioritize graphics-driver and system-stability checks.
- Easy Anti-Cheat shows an explicit error: follow the anti-cheat branch below.
- Login, matchmaking, or connection errors affect many players: check for a service incident before changing local files.
Test one change at a time and note whether it changes the crash location or timing.

- Restart the PC and make sure Fortnite finishes updating in the Epic Games Launcher.
- Check Epic’s public status page. Status can change, so treat the result as a snapshot rather than proof that your PC is faulty.
- Verify Fortnite’s files.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Close overlays and nonessential background applications.
- Test DirectX 11 if Fortnite is currently configured for DirectX 12.
1. Check Fortnite’s requirements
Compare your PC with Epic’s current Fortnite PC requirements and troubleshooting guidance. Do not rely on old articles listing fixed CPU, GPU, RAM, or operating-system numbers; requirements and supported Windows details can change.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
If the PC does not meet the current minimum requirements, software repairs may not produce a reliable result. The practical options are a supported device or an appropriate upgrade. However, meeting the requirements does not rule out corrupted files, driver conflicts, overheating, or unstable settings.
2. Verify Fortnite’s game files
File verification is the best first repair because it checks the installation without requiring a full reinstall.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find Fortnite.
- Open the game’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage, or the available game-management option.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the scan and repair to finish, then restart the launcher and test Fortnite.
Launcher labels can change between updates. If the wording differs, use the game’s management controls rather than deleting the installation manually.

Verification may download missing or damaged files. It can appear to pause at a high percentage, so do not interrupt it prematurely. Your account progress is stored online; verification does not erase your Fortnite account progress. It also cannot fix driver, thermal, Windows, or hardware faults.
3. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
The launcher cache contains cached launcher data and metadata. Clearing it is different from deleting Fortnite’s installation.
- Exit Fortnite and fully close the Epic Games Launcher.
- Also close its notification-area process if it remains running.
- Follow Epic’s current cache-clearing instructions rather than relying on an old hard-coded folder path.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the launcher and test Fortnite.
If the launcher itself fails to update, sign in, or manage multiple games, cache clearing may be more relevant than reinstalling Fortnite.
4. Test DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12
Epic specifically recommends trying DirectX 11 when Fortnite is using DirectX 12. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that DirectX 12 is universally broken.

If Fortnite opens, go to the game’s Video settings, change the rendering mode from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11 if the option is available, apply the change, and restart the game.
If Fortnite crashes before you can reach its settings, use an Epic-supported launch-argument or configuration method only when the current Epic instructions confirm it. Do not assume community-posted arguments such as -d3d11 are universally supported or current.
DirectX 11 may be more stable on some configurations, while DirectX 12 can provide better performance or newer rendering features on others. Intel’s documentation also shows that Fortnite crashes can affect particular GPU and driver combinations, including certain Intel Arc and Intel UHD scenarios: Intel Arc Fortnite crash guidance and Intel UHD window-mode crash guidance.
5. Update—or roll back—the graphics driver
Install graphics drivers from the relevant manufacturer or your PC manufacturer:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRestart Windows after installing a driver. Laptop users should check the laptop maker’s support page because customized graphics switching and power-management drivers may be required.
Timing matters. If Fortnite began crashing immediately after a graphics-driver update, a rollback or clean driver installation may be a better test than repeatedly installing newer releases. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities; they add another variable and are not required.
6. Close overlays and background utilities
Temporarily test Fortnite with nonessential software closed, especially:

- RGB controllers and hardware-monitoring tools
- GPU overclocking or undervolting utilities
- Macro, remapping, and peripheral software
- Screen recorders and streaming tools
- Third-party antivirus and “game booster” applications
- Mods or software that injects into games
Epic’s troubleshooting sequence includes isolating background applications with a clean boot when necessary. Use Microsoft’s current Windows clean-boot procedure, record what you changed, and restore normal startup services after testing.

7. Run the Epic Games Launcher as administrator
Administrator mode can diagnose a permission problem, but it is not a permanent requirement and does not improve FPS.
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher.
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Start Fortnite and test it.
Do not automatically set every Fortnite executable to run permanently as administrator unless Epic specifically directs you to do so.
8. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat only for anti-cheat symptoms
Use this branch when you see an explicit Easy Anti-Cheat error, an “untrusted system file” message, Fortnite closes immediately after the anti-cheat loading screen, or the game exits during anti-cheat initialization.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Epic’s current Fortnite/Easy Anti-Cheat instructions or the installer included with the verified Fortnite installation. Do not delete certificates, registry entries, or random anti-cheat files based only on forum advice. User reports, including discussions on Microsoft Q&A and Reddit, are anecdotal rather than universal repair instructions.
9. Reset Fortnite’s local configuration
If file verification and rendering-mode tests fail, Epic’s sequence eventually recommends removing the local FortniteGame folder from %localappdata%. Use a reversible rename first:
Rank #4
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%localappdata%in the address bar. - Find the
FortniteGamefolder. - Rename it to something such as
FortniteGame.old. - Launch Fortnite and test.
This resets local settings and cached configuration. You may need to redo graphics, input, and other preferences. Do not assume every local preference will be restored by cloud synchronization. If the renamed folder makes no difference, keep it temporarily for recovery, then remove it only when you are satisfied that no needed local data remains.
10. Reinstall only the component that needs it
Reinstallation is a later repair, not the default answer.
- Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher if the launcher cannot update, sign in, or manage multiple games correctly.
- Reinstall Fortnite if verification, cache clearing, driver testing, background-app isolation, and configuration reset fail.
- Install Fortnite on another drive if you see repeated corruption, installation failures, drive-health warnings, or other suspicious storage behavior.
Ensure there is sufficient free space and do not interrupt the download. A reinstall will not fix an unstable GPU driver, overheating, faulty memory, power problems, or a Windows-level failure.
11. Check Windows, drive health, and system stability
Move beyond game-file troubleshooting when:
- the entire PC reboots or blue-screens;
- the display driver repeatedly resets;
- multiple unrelated games crash;
- the PC becomes unusually hot, loud, or unstable;
- crashes occur under other workloads; or
- Event Viewer records hardware, display-driver, WHEA, or kernel errors.
Epic recommends checking the drive for errors when earlier fixes do not work. Also return CPU/GPU overclocks, undervolts, XMP/EXPO memory profiles, and unusual BIOS settings to known-stable defaults for testing. Do not claim that Fortnite alone proves an SSD, RAM module, power supply, or GPU is failing.
Windows Insider or preview builds can introduce compatibility issues that do not affect supported stable releases. Treat individual reports about a particular Windows build as reports, not proof of a Fortnite-wide defect.
Choose the first branch by symptom
| Symptom | Best first branch |
|---|---|
| Crashes before the main menu | Verify files, clear launcher cache, test administrator mode |
| Closes after anti-cheat starts | Check the exact anti-cheat error, overlays, security software, and drivers |
| Crashes only with DirectX 12 | Test DirectX 11, then update or roll back the GPU driver |
| Crashes while joining a match | Verify files, test another rendering mode, disable overlays, check drivers |
| Crashes after several minutes | Check temperatures, clocks, background utilities, memory stability, and power behavior |
| Whole PC reboots or blue-screens | Treat it as a Windows, driver, or hardware-stability issue |
| Started after an update | Check Epic notices and status; consider a driver rollback if timing matches |
| Only one mode or account is affected | Consider a mode, account, or service-side issue before reinstalling Windows |
What to send Epic or your hardware manufacturer
Before requesting support, record:
- Windows version and build
- Fortnite rendering mode: DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Performance mode
- GPU model and driver version
- CPU and installed system memory
- Where the crash occurs: launch, lobby, matchmaking, loading, or mid-match
- The exact Crash Reporter text or error code
- Whether only Fortnite closes or the whole PC reboots
- Recent Fortnite, Windows, driver, or hardware changes
- Whether verification, cache clearing, DirectX 11 testing, a clean boot, or configuration reset changed the behavior
- Any crash logs or diagnostics Epic requests
If the full Epic troubleshooting sequence does not resolve the problem, Epic directs users toward assistance from the relevant hardware manufacturer.
When to stop troubleshooting
If Fortnite still crashes after verification, launcher-cache clearing, rendering-mode testing, driver diagnosis, background-app isolation, local-configuration reset, and a justified reinstall, stop deleting random files or installing “PC repair” tools. The remaining cause is more likely to be a game regression, Windows or driver compatibility issue, unstable system settings, storage trouble, or hardware instability. Use the evidence you collected to contact Epic or the hardware manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does verifying Fortnite delete my progress?
No. Verification repairs installed files and does not erase your Fortnite account progress. It may download damaged or missing files.
Should I use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12?
Use the mode that is stable on your PC. If DirectX 12 crashes, test DirectX 11; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a universal recommendation.
Should I reinstall Fortnite?
Only after verification, cache clearing, driver testing, background-app isolation, and a configuration reset fail. Reinstallation cannot repair hardware or Windows instability.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can antivirus cause the Crash Reporter?
Security software can sometimes interfere, but do not disable it permanently. Use a narrow, temporary test and restore protection immediately.
Why does Fortnite crash only when joining a match?
That timing can point to rendering-mode, driver, overlay, anti-cheat, or asset-loading problems. Verify files and test another rendering mode first.
What if the entire PC restarts?
Treat the issue as a system-stability problem. Check drivers, temperatures, clocks, memory, power behavior, Windows errors, and hardware diagnostics.
Will deleting the local Fortnite folder reset my account?
No. It resets local settings and cached configuration, but you may need to redo graphics and input preferences. Rename the folder first instead of deleting it immediately.
The Bottom Line
“Fortnite has crashed” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Verify the installation, clear launcher data, test the rendering mode and GPU driver, isolate background software, then reset configuration or reinstall only when the evidence supports it. A reboot, blue screen, or recurring crash in other games requires Windows and hardware troubleshooting instead.
