Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Fortnite is stuck on the loading screen, will not launch, or cannot connect to Epic’s servers, first check whether Epic is experiencing an outage. If services are online, work through the fixes in order: verify the game files, clear the launcher cache, update graphics drivers, remove network or security blocks, and only then reinstall or delete local data.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
Loading failures can originate outside your computer or console. Epic Games Store Support tells players to check the Epic Games Server Status page when the launcher is crashing, not downloading, or not launching a title. If Fortnite or the account services are down, local repairs cannot restore the connection; the problem ends when Epic restores service.

- Check Epic’s server status. Look for an incident affecting Fortnite, login, matchmaking, or the Epic Games Launcher.
- Note the exact symptom. A frozen loading screen, a launcher that closes, an install that will not download, and an “Unable to login to Fortnite Servers. Please try again later” message can have different causes.
- Identify the platform. The PC procedure below uses Epic Games Launcher controls. PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox require their own cache instructions.
- Try one low-risk restart. Fully exit Fortnite and the launcher, restart the computer or console, and retry once. Do not start deleting folders until the service check and restart are complete.
What can stop Fortnite from loading?
| Failure layer | Typical signs | Best first check | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epic service or login outage | The launcher, login, or several online features fail at once | Epic Games Server Status | Fully reversible; wait for service restoration |
| Network path | Login timeout, ESP error, failed downloads, or a connection that works in other apps but drops in Fortnite | Restart modem/router, test another connection, and disable VPN or proxy | Reversible |
| Launcher or game files | Launcher opens but Fortnite will not start, crashes after an update, or reports damaged data | Verify Fortnite’s files and clear the launcher cache | Reversible before deletion or reinstall |
| Graphics driver or background software | A launch crash, black screen, freeze, or failure immediately after a driver or application change | Update the video driver and close background applications | Usually reversible |
| Firewall or security software | Launcher signs in but the game cannot reach Epic, or an exclusion changes the result | Allow Epic and Fortnite through the security product only when appropriate | Reversible; remove an unnecessary exclusion |
| Storage or local configuration | Install errors, ESP errors, corrupted updates, or a drive with little free space | Keep at least 10 GB free on the PC drive and check it for errors | Checking is reversible; deleting local data is not immediately recoverable |
PC fixes in Epic’s recommended order
1. Search the exact error text
Copy the complete message into Epic Games Support’s search rather than searching only for “Fortnite not loading.” Error wording identifies whether the problem is a login timeout, damaged files, launcher failure, or a platform-specific cache issue. Keep the message visible while you work so you do not apply a fix intended for a different error.

Open Epic’s current Fortnite system-requirements page and compare your Windows edition, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage with the listed minimums. Requirements can change as the game is updated. If the computer does not meet the minimum, file verification or a reinstall cannot make unsupported hardware load the game reliably.

3. Verify Fortnite’s files before reinstalling
Verification replaces missing or altered files without requiring a full game removal. In Epic Games Launcher:
- Open Library.
- Find Fortnite and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage, then Verify.
- Wait for the scan and any download to finish, then launch Fortnite again.
Do not interrupt the process by closing the launcher or shutting down Windows. If verification completes but the same error returns, continue to cache, driver, network, and security checks instead of repeatedly verifying unchanged files.
4. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
A damaged web cache can prevent the launcher from displaying correctly, signing in, downloading, or handing control to Fortnite. Use this safe Windows sequence:
- Exit Fortnite and close Epic Games Launcher. Also exit it from the notification-area icon if it remains running.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved, and press Enter. - With the launcher closed, remove folders whose names begin with
webcache. Folder names can vary by launcher version; do not delete unrelated folders. - Start Epic Games Launcher again, sign in, and test Fortnite.
Clearing this cache does not uninstall Fortnite. The launcher recreates the cache it needs.

5. Update the video driver
Fortnite may stop loading after a Windows update, game update, or graphics-driver change. Install the latest driver offered by your graphics-card manufacturer for your exact model and Windows edition, then restart the computer. If the manufacturer supplies separate driver packages, use the package intended for your card rather than a generic driver for a different model.
If the game began failing immediately after a driver update, note that timing. A clean driver reinstall or a rollback to the manufacturer’s previous stable release may be appropriate, but use the manufacturer’s documented procedure and create a restore point first when available.
6. Run Epic Games Launcher as administrator
Close the launcher, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and approve the Windows prompt. Retry Fortnite once. This test can reveal a permissions problem affecting updates or game files; it does not permanently repair a damaged installation. If it makes no difference, return to normal launching rather than running every application with elevated rights.
7. Close background applications
Quit nonessential programs before launching Fortnite, especially applications that overlay the game, record the screen, monitor hardware, inject on-screen statistics, synchronize files, or consume the network. Also pause large downloads. Restart Windows and test with only Epic Games Launcher and the normal security software running. If Fortnite then loads, re-enable background applications one at a time to identify the conflict.

- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

8. Check firewall and security-software permissions
Security software can block the launcher or Fortnite from reaching Epic. Open the product’s allowed-app or firewall section and confirm that Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite are permitted on the network you actually use. Make one change at a time and test immediately. Add the Fortnite folder to exclusions only when your security software is demonstrably blocking it, and remove the exclusion if it is unnecessary. Keep your protection enabled; an exclusion is a troubleshooting measure, not a general requirement.
9. Check the drive for errors
Storage faults can corrupt updates or make a game appear stuck. In File Explorer, open This PC, right-click the drive containing Fortnite, choose Properties, open Tools, and use Error checking. Follow Windows’ instructions and restart if requested. If Windows reports a failing drive, back up important files and address the hardware problem before attempting another large installation.
10. Keep at least 10 GB free on the PC drive
Epic’s ESP guidance asks PC players to maintain at least 10 GB of free space on the drive. The space is needed for temporary update and extraction work as well as the installed files. Check the drive in File Explorer > This PC, free space safely, restart the computer, and retry the launcher. Do not assume that the drive containing Windows is the same drive where Fortnite is installed.

- Close Fortnite and Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Locate the folder named
FortniteGameand remove it. Do not remove the installed game folder under your library unless the procedure specifically calls for a reinstall. - Restart Windows.
- Run Epic Games Launcher as administrator once, open Library > Fortnite > Manage > Verify, and wait for the launcher to rebuild required local data.
Local settings and cached data may be recreated or reset. If you are unsure which folder is safe to remove, stop at verification and contact Epic Support rather than deleting similarly named folders.
12. Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher
If the launcher itself crashes, will not download, or will not launch titles after cache clearing and verification, reinstall the launcher. Use Windows’ installed-apps settings to remove Epic Games Launcher, restart Windows, download the current installer from Epic, and sign in again. A launcher reinstall can require you to locate your existing game library; it does not automatically prove that Fortnite’s game files are damaged.
13. Reinstall Fortnite as the final PC file step
Reinstalling is appropriate when verification, cache clearing, local-data cleanup, and launcher repair do not resolve corrupted or incomplete files. Confirm that the target drive has substantially more free space than the minimum 10 GB requested for ESP troubleshooting, use a stable connection, and avoid sleep or shutdown during the download. If possible, install Fortnite on the same physical drive as Epic Games Launcher; Epic notes that some players resolve ESP errors this way.

Fix the “Unable to login to Fortnite Servers” message
Epic describes this message precisely: “This error appears when the game cannot load quickly enough to connect to our servers.” Treat it as a connection-timing problem first, not proof that your account is banned or that the game must be reinstalled.

- Check Epic’s server status.
- Confirm that the computer meets Fortnite’s requirements and that the video driver is current.
- Close background applications and retry.
- Restart the modem, router, and computer.
- Disable VPN or proxy software temporarily.
- Test a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If the hotspot works, the original network path is the likely place to investigate.
- Allow Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite through the firewall or security software.
- On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and run
ipconfig /flushdns, then restart the launcher.
For large downloads, Epic states: “A wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi for large downloads.” If your router is nearby, test with an Ethernet cable; a Cat6 cable is a practical choice for a modern home network. Keep the Wi-Fi test as a comparison rather than assuming a wired connection will solve an Epic-side outage.
Console-specific loading fixes
PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox
Epic’s instructions for clearing the platform cache differ among PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. Use the cache procedure for your exact console model in Epic Games Support, fully quit Fortnite first, and then restart the console before testing. Do not substitute a PC cache path or delete saved data unless the platform-specific instructions explicitly require it.
On any console, first check Epic’s server status and your platform’s online-service status. If the issue appears only on one console while Fortnite loads elsewhere on the same account, the local cache, system software, or network path is more likely than an account-wide outage. If every device fails at the same time, return to the service-status check before changing local settings.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next step
| What you observe | Next action | Stop point |
|---|---|---|
| Epic reports an active Fortnite or login incident | Wait and monitor the status page | Do not reinstall or delete local folders during the outage |
| Launcher opens, but Fortnite files fail verification | Run Verify again after confirming free space; then clear cache | Reinstall Fortnite only if verification cannot complete or the error returns |
| Only the home network fails; a hotspot works | Restart networking equipment, remove VPN/proxy settings, review firewall rules, and flush DNS on Windows | Contact the internet provider if other services also lose connectivity |
| Game fails immediately after a graphics-driver change | Install the correct current driver or follow the manufacturer’s rollback procedure | Escalate to the graphics-hardware manufacturer if other 3D applications also fail |
| Console cache cleanup changes nothing | Check Epic and platform service status, then contact Epic Support with the exact message | Do not repeat cache deletion indefinitely |
| Launcher and Fortnite fail after all file and network steps | Capture logs or screenshots requested by Epic Support and list every change already tested | Wait for support guidance instead of deleting additional folders |
When to escalate
- Epic Games Support: use this route for account login failures, persistent ESP messages, launcher behavior, or a problem that survives verification and reinstall.
- Your graphics or hardware manufacturer: escalate when the driver is current but Fortnite and other demanding 3D applications crash or show display errors.
- Your internet provider: contact the provider when a wired and wireless test both show broader connection failures, frequent modem drops, or DNS problems outside Fortnite.
Before contacting support, record your platform, Windows or console version, the exact error text, whether Epic’s status page showed an incident, the result of file verification, whether a hotspot worked, and the last fix you tried. This prevents support from repeating steps and makes it easier to identify whether the failure is service-side, network-side, or local.
If the manual Windows steps do not resolve a local launcher or system problem, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, a file shredder, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and has a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
Check Epic’s status before touching local files. On PC, verify Fortnite, clear the launcher cache, update the video driver, run the launcher with appropriate permissions, close background applications, review firewall and VPN settings, flush DNS when applicable, check the drive, and keep at least 10 GB free. Reserve local-folder deletion and reinstalling for the end of that sequence. On PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox, use the cache instructions for the specific platform. If a different connection works or Epic reports an incident, focus on the network or service rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
