To fix FPS drops in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, first identify whether the problem affects one game or the whole collection, then compare your graphics card with the published baseline, choose a sustainable frame-rate cap, and test demanding graphics options one at a time. Fullscreen mode, lower dynamic shadows, disabling ambient occlusion, and deliberate VSync testing are the highest-value starting points. Verify the game files through the launcher, update your graphics driver, close overlays, and only then inspect the configuration file.
Start by identifying the kind of drop
A short dip in a busy Citadel corridor is a different problem from constant stutter across every mission. Before changing settings, make a small record for each affected title: Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2, or Mass Effect 3. Write down the save location or mission, the usual frame rate, the lowest value you observe, and whether the issue appears when turning the camera, entering a new area, or during combat.

One game or all three?
If only one entry in the collection drops frames, keep the other two as control cases. Load a similar save or a quiet area in each game and repeat the same camera movement. A problem isolated to one game or scene points toward a local configuration, asset, or engine behavior rather than a system-wide performance limit. If all three games behave badly, check hardware headroom, drivers, background software, and power or thermal conditions before spending time on per-game edits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsScene-specific symptoms
Use the same reproducible location after every change. The Citadel, large outdoor planets, busy combat scenes, and areas with many lights or reflections are useful test points because they make frame-time changes easier to see. Do not compare a menu average with an in-game low; sustained lows and hitching are more important than a high number in a quiet room.

Check your PC against the published baseline
Steam Support lists an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 or AMD Radeon 7970/R9 280X-class graphics card with 2 GB of video memory for the collection. This is a baseline, not a promise that every scene will hold a particular frame rate. A system below that graphics and VRAM level should use reduced settings or be upgraded before advanced troubleshooting. If your card meets or exceeds it, persistent dips can still occur in demanding scenes, so continue with the controlled tests below.
| Check | What to record | How it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics processor | Exact NVIDIA or AMD model | Below the GTX 760/Radeon 7970/R9 280X-class baseline means you should lower image-quality options first. |
| Video memory | Total dedicated VRAM | The published baseline includes 2 GB; less headroom makes conservative texture and rendering choices more important. |
| Game scope | ME1, ME2, ME3, or all three | An isolated title or scene calls for a reproducible per-game test; collection-wide drops call for system checks. |
| Frame behavior | Average, lowest observed FPS, and visible hitching | Use lows and frame-time stability, not a menu or loading-screen average, to judge a change. |
Set a stable target in the graphics menu
Electronic Arts documents controls for resolution, window mode, monitor selection, dynamic shadows, motion blur, VSync, a frame-rate cap, film grain, antialiasing, and ambient occlusion. Start with a target your display and hardware can sustain in the hardest scene you tested. The available cap choices are 30, 60, 120, 144, and 240 frames per second.
Choose fullscreen and the correct display
Open the game’s graphics options, select the monitor you actually use, and choose fullscreen for the first test. A stable cap is preferable to an uncapped rate that repeatedly rises and falls. For a 60 Hz display, 60 FPS is the obvious first target; for a 120 Hz or faster display, choose 120, 144, or 240 only if the demanding scenes can hold that rate. If the hardware cannot sustain the selected value, step down to the next cap rather than chasing brief peaks.
Test VSync deliberately
VSync limits the frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate when enabled. It can reduce visible tearing, but EA notes that it may add input lag. Run the same scene twice, once with VSync enabled and once disabled. Keep it enabled when tearing is more distracting than latency; keep it disabled when responsive control matters more and tearing is acceptable. Treat the choice as a trade-off, not a universal performance fix.

Change one expensive option at a time
Record the result after each change. If you disable several settings together, you will not know which one reduced frame time or which image-quality loss was unnecessary.
| Setting | First test | What you give up | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic shadows | Lower the setting before changing resolution. | Less detailed or less prominent shadowing. | Whether the low FPS improves in interiors and scenes with many lights. |
| Ambient occlusion | Turn it off. | Less contact shading in corners and where objects meet. | EA specifically notes that disabling it may improve performance on some systems. |
| Antialiasing | Disable it temporarily. | More visible stair-stepping on edges. | Whether camera movement becomes smoother without an unacceptable image change. |
| Motion blur | Disable it for diagnosis. | Less simulated blur during rapid movement. | It can make perceived smearing easier to separate from actual stutter. |
| Film grain | Disable it for diagnosis. | Less grain in the final image. | Usually a visual preference; use the same setting in every comparison. |
| Resolution | Lower only after the targeted options above. | A softer image and more visible scaling. | Whether the GPU is clearly the limiting factor at your native resolution. |
A repeatable graphics test
- Load the same save and stand in the same position.
- Select fullscreen, the correct monitor, and a sustainable frame-rate cap.
- Test VSync on, then off, while noting tearing, input feel, and the lowest FPS.
- Restore the preferred VSync state and lower dynamic shadows.
- Repeat the scene with ambient occlusion disabled.
- Restore the better-performing combination, then test antialiasing, motion blur, and film grain individually.
- Only after those tests, reduce resolution and repeat the same scene.
Keep the change that improves the low without creating an image-quality loss you can see during normal play. A setting that raises a quiet-area average but leaves the troublesome Citadel or planet scene unchanged has not solved the problem you actually reported.
Check the launcher before editing files
The collection is available on PC through the EA app and Steam. Use the platform where you installed the game; its updates, file-verification process, and support route are platform-specific.
Install launcher and game updates
Exit the game, let the EA app or Steam finish any pending update, and restart the launcher. An interrupted or outdated client can leave the game on a different build from the one expected by its installed files. Do not begin configuration edits while an update is still being applied.

Verify the installed files
Run the platform’s built-in file-repair or verification command for the affected game. Verification compares local files with the platform’s copy and replaces missing or damaged data. It does not tune graphics settings, so repeat your controlled scene test afterward rather than assuming the repair changed performance.
Use the correct support channel
EA directs PC technical issues to the relevant platform support channel when the problem depends on the EA app or Steam installation. When you report a persistent drop, include the affected game, launcher, GPU model and VRAM, the exact scene, your frame-rate cap and VSync state, and which single setting changes you tested.
Update the graphics driver and remove test interference
Install the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer, then reboot before retesting. Driver changes are general PC hygiene, not an EA-guaranteed cure. If a new driver is the first change that helps, note the driver version so you can reproduce the result or roll back through the manufacturer’s supported process if another game becomes unstable.

Close overlays and capture tools
Temporarily disable third-party overlays, background recording, and capture utilities. Run the same save with those tools off, then turn them back on one at a time if you need them. An improvement identifies a local interaction; it does not prove that the overlay is defective in every setup.

Keep the test controlled
Do not combine a driver update, a resolution change, a launcher repair, and an overlay shutdown in one trial. Make a short log with the date, driver version, cap, VSync state, and one graphics setting per run. This prevents a placebo conclusion based on a different scene or a quieter background workload.
Inspect the configuration file only as an advanced step
If graphics settings do not persist between launches, EA forum guidance places the Steam configuration under Mass Effect Legendary EditionGameME3BioGameConfig. The documented path identifies where to look; it does not establish that a particular community edit will fix FPS drops.
Back up before touching a value
- Close the game and launcher.
- Copy the affected configuration file to a separate folder and give the copy a date-based name.
- Change one value only, using a plain-text editor.
- Launch the same save and repeat the reproducible scene test.
- If the game becomes unstable, restores the old setting, or stops saving options, close it and replace the edited file with your backup.
Do not paste an unexplained block of community settings into the file. Without a documented relationship between a value and frame pacing, an edit can create instability while making the original problem harder to diagnose.

Understand what tuning cannot remove
The remaster uses an updated, unified Unreal Engine 3 version and adds visual features including real-time reflections. Some scene-specific or engine-era frame-pacing limits may remain after ordinary tuning. Official information does not promise a universal fix for every drop, even on hardware above the published baseline.

When a persistent drop is probably scene-specific
If one location still produces the same low after a stable cap, reduced shadows, disabled ambient occlusion, a deliberate VSync choice, file verification, a driver update, and overlay testing, compare that location with a nearby scene using the same settings. A repeatable dip confined to one area is useful evidence for support, not a reason to keep lowering every option in the game.
What to send to support
- The game number and mission or area.
- The save location or a short route that reproduces the drop.
- Your GPU model, VRAM amount, driver version, launcher, resolution, cap, and VSync state.
- The lowest FPS you recorded and whether the symptom is a sustained low or a brief hitch.
- The exact single-setting changes that helped, did nothing, or made the image worse.
This record lets the relevant support team distinguish a file problem from a reproducible scene or frame-pacing limitation.
