For the Windows message “GLFW error 65543: WGL: OpenGL profile requested but WGL_ARB_create_context_profile is unavailable,” first check which graphics adapter Minecraft is using, then install the appropriate current driver from your computer or GPU manufacturer. Restart if required and try again. If the GPU itself cannot provide the graphics capabilities Minecraft needs, a driver update cannot add them; compatible hardware may be necessary. The code alone is not enough to identify one fix, so use the complete error message and your Minecraft version to diagnose it.
What GLFW error 65543 means
In the reported Windows/WGL case, the message says that the requested OpenGL profile is unavailable. A 2021 Minecraft Forum support post contains this exact wording and a reply suggesting an Intel graphics-driver update, while noting that Minecraft 1.17 changed system requirements. That discussion is troubleshooting context, not an official diagnosis or a guaranteed fix. Read the forum report.

GLFW error 65543 can appear alongside different platform-specific messages. Do not assume the WGL explanation applies if your message mentions a different API or platform. Record the full text, not just the number.
How to troubleshoot the error
- Collect the details. Note the complete GLFW message, Minecraft Java Edition version, operating system, graphics-card model, and whether the computer has both integrated and discrete graphics. These details help distinguish a driver issue from a GPU capability or adapter-selection issue.
- Check which GPU Minecraft is using. On a computer with switchable graphics, verify that the game is launching on the intended adapter rather than an unintended or less capable one. If the system has only one graphics device, record its model for the requirements check.
- Update the graphics driver from the appropriate manufacturer. Use the driver supplied by your computer manufacturer or GPU manufacturer, as appropriate for your system. Restart if the installer requires it, then launch Minecraft again. The Intel-driver suggestion in the forum post is not a universal diagnosis; choose the driver for your actual graphics device.
- Compare the GPU with Mojang’s current requirements. Mojang’s system-requirements page, published July 21, 2026, lists a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM among the minimum specifications. Its minimum performance target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings. Check the page for its separate examples for discrete and integrated graphics, as well as the operating-system requirements: Minecraft Java Edition System Requirements.
- Retry after each change. If the driver update or adapter selection resolves the launch failure, no hardware change is needed. If the error remains, compare the full message and your GPU’s capabilities with the requirements for your game version before considering an upgrade.
Why an older Minecraft version may have launched
Graphics requirements have changed across Java Edition releases. Mojang’s 1.17 release notes describe a move to an OpenGL 3.2 core profile, which helps explain why a computer that ran an earlier release could encounter a graphics-related launch problem after updating. Minecraft: Caves & Cliffs: Part 1 (1.17 Java).

Mojang’s 1.21.9 release notes say OpenGL 3.3 became required to play, up from 3.2; they also note that OpenGL 4.0 had been the posted minimum requirement since 2017. These statements refer to different points in the game’s requirements history, so check the release notes relevant to your version rather than treating an older forum post as current guidance. When a driver update is not enough
A driver can expose capabilities supported by a graphics device, but it cannot supply missing hardware capability. If the GPU cannot meet the relevant graphics requirements and no supported driver provides the needed support, the practical remedy may be a compatible graphics card or a replacement computer. Mojang’s current page also lists a recommended target of 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings, with 16 GB of memory and a graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM; those are recommendations, not the minimum figures.

Mojang cautions that below-spec hardware may still launch now, but performance and visual quality are not guaranteed and Java Edition may struggle or fail to launch in the future, especially as the game transitions away from OpenGL toward Vulkan. Requirements can change, so check Mojang’s current page before choosing hardware.

Avoid copying an arbitrary OpenGL DLL into Java or Minecraft folders as a standard solution. The available forum suggestions do not establish DLL replacement or software rendering as safe, current, officially supported fixes; software rendering can also impose a severe performance penalty. Diagnose the adapter, driver, and hardware capability first.
