The upgrade centers on improved graphics and smoother performance, but the benefits depend on whether individual games receive PS5 Pro enhancements.
What Sony announced
Sony introduced PS5 Pro during a technical presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead system architect. The company positioned it as a more capable version of PS5, intended to improve image quality and frame rates while reducing the trade-offs players often make between visual detail and smooth performance.

| Change | Sony’s claim | What it is intended to do |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | 67% more compute units than the base PS5 | Support more demanding graphics and rendering workloads. |
| Memory | 28% faster | Provide faster access to data used in rendering. |
| Rendering | Up to 45% faster | Help games render images more quickly, potentially supporting higher or steadier frame rates. |
Sony also highlighted advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-assisted upscaling technology designed to improve image clarity. In its reveal materials, Sony described sharper 4K visuals and higher or more consistent frame rates on supported games.
Do all PS5 games get a PS5 Pro upgrade?
No. Sony says the enhanced features are available only in select games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro, and implementation varies by title. A game-specific enhancement determines whether players can benefit from features such as PSSR, improved ray tracing or performance changes; the console’s hardware claims do not guarantee the same uplift across every PS5 game.
For a particular game, check whether it is identified as PS5 Pro enhanced and what that title’s enhancement includes. Sony’s reveal video describes the feature limits and variation: PlayStation’s official PS5 Pro reveal video.
What did PS5 Pro cost at launch?

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What comes in the PS5 Pro package?
Sony’s announced package includes a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The console is digital: a disc drive is sold separately. If you play physical PS5 games or watch Blu-ray discs, account for the separate drive and verify its compatibility and availability with the console before buying.
Who is the upgrade for?
PS5 Pro is most relevant to players who want better image detail, frame-rate performance or ray tracing in games specifically enhanced for the console. Before deciding, consider your current console, the games you play and whether their PS5 Pro enhancements matter to you. Players with physical-disc libraries should also factor in the separate disc drive; the 2TB storage capacity is another practical difference to weigh against the launch price.
