Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A Gmail-related Postfix failure on Ubuntu can come from two separate places: Postfix may be unable to reach Dovecot’s local SASL socket, or the connection to Gmail may be failing on DNS, TCP, TLS, or account authentication. The fastest fix is to classify the error first. For a local SASL problem, Dovecot must create /var/spool/postfix/private/auth, Postfix must use the relative path private/auth, and the socket must be accessible to the postfix service. Gmail submission failures require the correct port, TLS mode, and Google-approved authentication method.

This guide gives a repair sequence, verification commands, an error map, and a decision table so you can fix the right layer without weakening relay or TLS security.

First decide whether the failure is local or remote
Read the exact Postfix and Gmail response before changing configuration. A local Dovecot problem is visible in Postfix’s own SMTP daemon logs. A remote Gmail problem appears when Postfix tries to reach Gmail or when Gmail rejects an otherwise established session.
| What you see | Likely layer | First checks |
|---|---|---|
private/auth, smtpd_sasl_path, “SASL per-connection initialization failed,” “permission denied,” or “no such file” |
Postfix cannot use Dovecot’s Unix-domain authentication socket | Socket existence, listener path, owner/mode, and Postfix chroot visibility |
connect to ...gmail... timed out, connection refused, or name-resolution errors |
Outbound network path to Gmail | DNS, IPv4/IPv6 reachability, firewall egress, and blocked SMTP ports |
| Gmail replies with 530, 534, 535, or 504 | TLS mode, credentials, OAuth/app-password policy, or account policy | Port and encryption mode, full username, supported authentication method, and Workspace policy |
These paths are independent. Fixing Unix-socket permissions will not solve a Gmail 535 response, and changing a Gmail password will not create a missing private/auth socket.

How the Postfix–Dovecot socket fits together
Dovecot supplies the SASL authentication service. Postfix’s SMTP server asks Dovecot to verify a username and password over a Unix-domain socket. On the common Ubuntu layout, Dovecot creates the socket at /var/spool/postfix/private/auth. Postfix’s queue directory is normally /var/spool/postfix, so smtpd_sasl_path must be written as private/auth, not as a second absolute path.
The socket is a filesystem object, not a TCP listener. Its mode and ownership therefore control whether the Postfix process can open it. A documented, restrictive arrangement is mode 0660, user postfix, and group postfix. Do not make the socket world-writable just to make an error disappear.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What happens during a successful login
- A client connects to the Postfix submission or SMTP listener.
- Postfix advertises SASL mechanisms after the session is encrypted as required.
- Postfix opens
private/authand sends the credentials to Dovecot. - Dovecot validates the account and returns success or failure.
- Postfix applies relay restrictions before accepting a message for delivery.
If step three fails, the log points to the local socket. If steps one or two fail against Gmail, investigate the network or TLS path. If Gmail rejects the credentials after a complete TLS session, investigate account policy rather than the Unix socket.
Install the required Ubuntu services
Install Postfix and Dovecot’s core package on the Ubuntu host that accepts authenticated SMTP. Add IMAP or POP packages only when you actually provide those services; they are not required for the SMTP SASL socket itself.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install postfix dovecot-core
The Postfix package asks for a mail configuration type during installation. Choose the role that matches your server, then inspect the generated configuration before making changes. Keep a backup of each file so you can revert a syntax mistake.
sudo cp /etc/postfix/main.cf /etc/postfix/main.cf.backup
sudo cp /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf.backup
sudo cp /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf.backup
Configure Dovecot’s authentication listener
1. Create the socket inside Postfix’s queue tree
Open /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf. Inside the service auth section, verify or add this listener:
Recommended Free Tools
service auth {
unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth {
mode = 0660
user = postfix
group = postfix
}
}
Keep the listener inside the existing service auth block. Do not create a second conflicting service auth section. If your file already contains other listeners, leave them intact unless you have a specific reason to remove them.

2. Enable the mechanisms your clients use
In /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf, set the mechanisms needed by the SMTP client. A common setting when LOGIN is required is:
auth_mechanisms = plain login
Mechanism names are case-insensitive in configuration, but the advertised names may appear in uppercase in an SMTP capability response. Enabling a mechanism does not replace TLS: do not permit credentials to travel over an unencrypted session. Configure the SMTP service to require encryption before authentication.
3. Validate Dovecot’s parsed configuration
Use Dovecot’s configuration dump before restarting. It catches misplaced braces and conflicting settings without requiring you to guess which include file won.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →sudo doveconf -n
Confirm that the output contains the intended auth_mechanisms value and the listener path. If Dovecot reports a syntax error, fix that error first; systemd will not create the socket from a configuration it cannot parse.
Point Postfix at the same socket
Edit /etc/postfix/main.cf and set the Dovecot SASL parameters:
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot
smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
The relative path is deliberate. Postfix resolves it relative to its queue directory, producing /var/spool/postfix/private/auth on a standard Ubuntu installation. If you changed queue_directory, verify the resulting path before assuming the Dovecot path is wrong.
Keep relay protection enabled
Authentication must not turn the server into an open relay. Retain restrictions equivalent to:

smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated, permit_mynetworks, reject_unauth_destination
Some newer Postfix configurations place the equivalent policy in smtpd_relay_restrictions. The important behavior is that authenticated clients and explicitly trusted networks are allowed, while unauthenticated delivery to destinations outside your local domains is rejected. Never remove reject_unauth_destination as a shortcut for a login error.
Check the effective Postfix values
sudo postconf -n | grep -E '^(queue_directory|smtpd_sasl_type|smtpd_sasl_path|smtpd_sasl_auth_enable|smtpd_(recipient|relay)_restrictions)'
This shows the values Postfix is actually using after all configuration files and defaults are merged. A correct-looking edit in a file that is not included, or a later override, is a common reason that the daemon continues using the old socket path.
Restart services and inspect the socket
Reload when you changed only a setting that supports reload; restart when you changed a listener and want to guarantee that the old process is gone. Restarting both services is the clearest first verification after changing the listener.
sudo systemctl restart dovecot
sudo systemctl restart postfix
sudo systemctl status dovecot --no-pager
sudo systemctl status postfix --no-pager
Now inspect the socket itself:
sudo ls -l /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
sudo stat /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
sudo namei -l /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
You should see a socket owned by postfix and grouped to postfix, with mode equivalent to srw-rw---- for 0660. namei checks every parent directory; a correct socket mode cannot help if a parent directory denies traversal.

sudo journalctl -u dovecot -b --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u postfix -b --no-pager
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/mail.log
Ubuntu installations commonly write mail events to /var/log/mail.log, but a different syslog or logging configuration may use another file. Use the configured mail log if that path does not exist.
Fix the Postfix chroot visibility problem
Postfix services can run in a chroot. In that case, a socket that exists on the host at /var/spool/postfix/private/auth may still be invisible to the chrooted SMTP process, depending on the service definition and queue layout. This produces “no such file” or initialization failures even when ls shows the socket.

Open /etc/postfix/master.cf and inspect the SMTP service line. The fields include a chroot flag; a typical line resembles:
smtp inet n - y - - smtpd
For troubleshooting, Ubuntu documentation describes temporarily changing that service’s chroot flag from y to n, then restarting Postfix. Make the smallest possible change, test the socket again, and treat the result as a diagnostic signal rather than an automatic permanent hardening decision.
sudo systemctl restart postfix
sudo systemctl status postfix --no-pager
If removing the chroot makes authentication work, the path was not visible inside the previous jail. Decide whether to keep the service unchrooted according to your security design, or restore the chroot and provide the required socket and directory visibility inside it. Do not copy credentials or make broad filesystem permissions changes merely to avoid understanding the chroot layout.
Use the right Gmail endpoint and encryption mode
When Postfix is connecting outward to Gmail for submission, use smtp.gmail.com. Port 587 uses SMTP submission with STARTTLS; port 465 uses SMTP over SSL from the beginning of the connection. A client configured for implicit SSL on port 587, or STARTTLS commands on port 465, will fail before authentication.
| Gmail endpoint | Encryption negotiation | Typical symptom when mismatched |
|---|---|---|
smtp.gmail.com:587 |
Connect in plain SMTP, issue EHLO, then STARTTLS; authenticate only after TLS succeeds |
530 “Must issue a STARTTLS command first” or a TLS handshake error |
smtp.gmail.com:465 |
Start TLS immediately with an SSL-capable client | Connection or protocol errors when the client expects a plaintext greeting |
Use the full Google account address as the username. Modern Google accounts may require OAuth, and password-based SMTP may require an app password where Google permits that method. A normal account password can be rejected even when it is correct for web sign-in.

openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect 127.0.0.1:587 -crlf
After the certificate and greeting appear, type:
EHLO test.example
A working authenticated submission service should advertise STARTTLS and an AUTH line containing the mechanisms you intentionally enabled, commonly LOGIN and PLAIN. If AUTH is missing, check that SASL is enabled on the listener and that you are examining the submission service rather than a different SMTP service.
Test the Gmail network path
For port 587, use:
openssl s_client -starttls smtp -connect smtp.gmail.com:587 -crlf
For port 465, use:
openssl s_client -connect smtp.gmail.com:465 -crlf
These tests establish whether DNS, TCP reachability, and TLS negotiation work. They do not prove that an account is authorized to send. Do not paste a real password into an ad-hoc terminal transcript. Use a configured mail client or controlled test sender for the authenticated message.
Perform one controlled authenticated send
After the capability test succeeds, send one message to an address you control using the same endpoint, port, encryption mode, username, and authentication method as the failing application. Watch the Postfix queue and log while it runs:
mailq
sudo tail -f /var/log/mail.log
Confirm whether the message is accepted, deferred, or rejected, then stop the log follow command. A successful SMTP acceptance followed by a delivery delay is a separate queue or remote-delivery issue, not a Dovecot socket failure.

| Response | Meaning | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
530 5.7.0 Authentication required |
The client attempted a command that requires authentication before logging in | Authenticate at the required point, after establishing the required TLS session |
530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first |
Gmail requires encryption before AUTH | Use STARTTLS on port 587 and authenticate only after the TLS handshake |
535 5.7.80 Username and Password not accepted |
Credentials or the account’s authentication policy failed | Check the full username, OAuth or app-password requirement, and Google account or Workspace policy |
534 5.7.90 Application-specific password required |
Password-based SMTP requires an app password for this account | Use an app password where Google allows it, or switch to a supported OAuth flow |
504 5.7.40 XOAUTH is no longer supported |
The client is using an obsolete XOAUTH method | Update the client or integration to a currently supported OAuth mechanism |
These are remote authentication decisions. If they appear, the local Dovecot socket may be perfectly healthy, especially when Postfix is acting as a Gmail client rather than accepting logins from Gmail.

Use DNS/TCP/TLS tests and one controlled authenticated send |
Network failures that look like authentication failures
A timeout to Gmail is not evidence that Dovecot is broken. Test name resolution and both IP families when a host has IPv4 and IPv6:
getent ahosts smtp.gmail.com
nc -vz smtp.gmail.com 587
nc -vz smtp.gmail.com 465
If IPv6 fails while IPv4 works, inspect the host’s IPv6 route or configure the MTA’s address-family behavior deliberately rather than randomly changing authentication settings. A local firewall, cloud egress policy, or ISP may block SMTP ports; port 25 restrictions are especially common, but a policy can affect submission ports as well. Resolve the network path before changing SASL configuration.
Logging and security practices during diagnosis
- Use
systemctl status,journalctl, and the configured mail log to correlate the exact failure with the test you just ran. - Increase authentication or SMTP debugging only for the shortest practical interval. Verbose settings can generate very large logs and may expose sensitive metadata.
- Never log or paste real passwords. Redact account names when sharing diagnostic output publicly.
- After testing, remove temporary debug and auth-debug settings, restart or reload the affected service, and verify normal log volume.
- Retain relay restrictions and require TLS even while troubleshooting.
Gmail sending limits are not socket-fix benchmarks
Google’s current guidance lists a limit of 2,000 messages per day for Google Workspace users and 10,000 recipients per user per day for SMTP relay. These are service limits, not performance measurements for a Postfix–Dovecot socket. Reaching a quota can produce a sending or policy response even when every local socket check passes.
Final verification checklist
- Classify the error. Decide whether the log points to
private/auth, a network timeout, TLS negotiation, or a Gmail status code. - Confirm Dovecot’s listener. Ensure
10-master.confcreates/var/spool/postfix/private/authwith mode0660, userpostfix, and grouppostfix. - Confirm mechanisms. Set
auth_mechanisms = plain loginwhen LOGIN is required and keep TLS mandatory. - Confirm Postfix’s path. Use
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot,smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth, andsmtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes. - Confirm relay policy. Keep authenticated and trusted-network permits plus
reject_unauth_destinationor its modern equivalent. - Restart and inspect. Check service status, the socket’s owner/mode, parent-directory traversal, and the mail log.
- Check chroot visibility. Temporarily change the SMTP chroot flag only as a diagnostic, then make a deliberate security decision.
- Test capabilities. Use
EHLOto verifySTARTTLSand the intendedAUTHmechanisms. - Test Gmail correctly. Use
smtp.gmail.comon 587 with STARTTLS or 465 with SSL, then use the full account address and an OAuth/app-password-compatible method. - Send one controlled message. Confirm acceptance and queue/log behavior, then remove temporary debugging.
The Bottom Line
When Postfix reports a Dovecot socket error, make /var/spool/postfix/private/auth exist with the right owner, mode, and chroot visibility, and reference it as private/auth. When Gmail returns a timeout or 530–535 response, switch your investigation to DNS, connectivity, TLS, and Google’s current authentication policy. Treat those as different failures, and keep relay restrictions and encryption enabled throughout the repair.
