If Grand Theft Auto IV keeps crashing on Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then rule out third-party app interference and test the latest Proton compatibility tool. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed GTA IV-specific fix: no universal Deck crash solution is established, and the game’s current Steam Deck rating should be checked on its live Steam listing.
Try the official, reversible troubleshooting steps first
- Update SteamOS and restart. Install any available system updates, then restart the Deck. Steam recommends updating and restarting when troubleshooting system instability. Steam’s troubleshooting guide provides the general steps.
- Disable third-party applications temporarily. Exit or disable apps installed through Desktop Mode that could affect Steam applications, then restart and test GTA IV again. This helps determine whether another app is involved; it does not identify the cause by itself.
- Test a different Proton compatibility tool. From the game’s Steam Library entry, open Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and choose the latest Proton tool available in Steam. Test the game after Steam applies the change. Steam notes that forcing Proton can cause Steam to download the Windows version if only a Linux version is installed.
Changing Proton is an experiment, not evidence of a single root cause or a confirmed fix. One July 2024 community report described the Complete Edition crashing after about ten minutes despite trying different Proton versions.
Check what Steam Deck compatibility ratings mean
Valve’s rating is a general assessment of the game’s tested experience on Deck, not a diagnosis of an individual crash. Its categories are Verified (works great out of the box), Playable (may require manual tweaks), Unsupported (currently not functional), and Unknown (not yet reviewed). Valve evaluates input, display, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and middleware compatibility; it says reviews are ongoing, so ratings can change. Check the Steam Deck compatibility page and GTA IV’s live Steam listing rather than assuming a current rating.
When to contact Steam Support
If the problem remains specific to the Deck after the basic steps, consult Steam’s troubleshooting guide and contact Steam Support if you still cannot resolve it. Rockstar Games Customer Support says Steam Deck support for its games results from Steam’s testing and optimization for the device; its support article, last updated March 8, 2024, directs users with Deck-only hardware or performance issues to Steam’s guide and Steam Support. Optional advanced experiment: FusionFix
FusionFix is a third-party community project for GTA IV, not an official Rockstar crash fix. Its documentation says to install it in the game’s root folder and notes that Proton/Wine requires a dinput8.dll override; Proton Experimental already loads that DLL by default. Follow the project’s current FusionFix instructions if you choose to try it, and back up configuration and save data first.
A Steam community thread suggested FusionFix and a Proton/Wine DLL override in response to one player’s report of crashes after about ten minutes. The reply was generic and did not confirm that the suggestion fixed the original player’s problem, so treat it as an optional experiment rather than a proven remedy. See the community discussion.
