Start by identifying your San Andreas release and the exact symptom. The original PC game behaves differently on Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher, Windows Store, and older retail/DVD builds, so a save conversion or mod that works for one edition may break another. Run the safe official checks first
Rockstar’s “Basic Troubleshooting for PC,” updated December 12, 2024, gives general Windows advice rather than a San Andreas-specific guaranteed repair. Its two relevant instructions are: Ensure that your video drivers are the most up to date versions
and Disable any screen overlay, recording, or sharing software.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Install the current graphics driver for your GPU from its manufacturer, then restart again.
- Temporarily disable overlays, recording utilities, chat overlays, and screen-sharing tools. Re-enable them one at a time after the game is stable.
- Right-click the game’s executable or launcher shortcut, open Properties, choose Compatibility, and test Run this program as an administrator if permissions appear to be involved.
- On Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. This replaces damaged official files but does not repair a bad save or guarantee compatibility with a modded installation.
Test after each change. If the problem returns only when an overlay or recording tool is enabled, leave that tool disabled while playing or configure an exception.
“Game Doesn’t Launch / Crashing At Start-up”
Check the error text before deleting files
A startup crash can come from a missing legacy component, a damaged settings file, incompatible modified files, permissions, or a driver/overlay conflict. Write down the exact message and whether the crash happens before the main menu, while loading a save, or after starting a new game. That distinction determines the next step.
Fix the DirectX 9.0 message with DirectPlay
If the literal message is “Grand Theft Auto SA requires at least DirectX version 9.0”, a Steam community technical guide attributes that particular error to disabled legacy DirectPlay. The guide says its procedure applies to Steam, digital, and DVD-ROM copies, but not Windows Store copies.
- Press the Windows key and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result and expand Legacy Components.
- Enable DirectPlay, confirm with OK, and let Windows install the component.
- Restart Windows and launch San Andreas again.

Reset a corrupted or incompatible gta_sa.set file
A community guide suggests removing gta_sa.set when a launch or loading failure is associated with a corrupted settings file, particularly after a downgrade. The file is normally in the GTA San Andreas User Files folder. This resets graphics and control configuration; it does not delete your saves.

Crashes, freezes, and strange behavior during gameplay
Turn on the in-game frame limiter
The Steam community technical guide reports timing-related problems as frame rates rise and recommends enabling San Andreas’s built-in frame limiter. Symptoms listed in that guide include difficult missions, abnormal movement or aiming, unusual vehicle handling, cutscenes that never finish, and crashes while listening to user radio.
- Start the game and open Options.
- Choose Display Setup, then Advanced if that menu is present.
- Turn Frame Limiter on, apply the setting, and restart the game.
Do not treat an uncapped frame rate as a general performance fix for this game. Multi-monitor car-explosion crash
The same technical guide describes a crash when a car explodes on a multi-monitor setup. Its suggested workarounds are to disable the additional monitors or test Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode. It also says SilentPatchSA addresses the issue while allowing other monitors to remain enabled.

When a save will not load or starts a new game
Separate a damaged save from a version mismatch
First test whether a new game starts. If a new game works but one save crashes, fails to appear, or opens as if no progress exists, suspect the save itself or a release mismatch before reinstalling the game. The community guide warns that saves from retail DVD or older Steam versions may not work with a different Steam or retail build; they can crash during loading or behave unexpectedly.

“Graphics problem” can mean an unsupported resolution, a stretched image, misplaced HUD elements, a driver failure, or a crash caused by display configuration. Record which one you see before installing a widescreen mod.

Rockstar warns that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics, and AGP cards may be incompatible, and that requirements can change over time. These are the requirements published on that page, not a guarantee that every modern GPU and driver combination will work. Steam’s separate original-game support page retains legacy Windows 2000/XP-era requirements; do not merge the two pages into one specification.
“Cannot find 800×600 video mode” and unsupported resolutions
The phrase “Cannot find 800×600 video mode” is used in a Steam community guide for the original game. Confirm that Windows detects the display, update the graphics driver, and reset gta_sa.set using the backed-up procedure above if the settings file may contain an invalid mode.
