Start by checking whether other players are reporting the same problem, then fully restart Steam and the game, verify the installation, and reset the game’s local configuration before trying advanced fixes.
First, determine whether the problem is local or server-side
This error only means that HELLDIVERS 2 could not complete a multiplayer lobby connection. It does not identify the cause.

Before changing Windows or router settings, check these symptoms:
- Quickplay fails but direct friend joins work: matchmaking or service-side trouble is possible.
- Every lobby fails, including friends-only sessions: check local files, security software, GameGuard, and your network.
- Only one friend is affected: test another host or a third player; the issue may involve presence, crossplay, or that particular connection.
- The game works on a phone hotspot: your home router, ISP, VPN, DNS path, or firewall is more likely involved.
- Several players report the same failure: wait before reinstalling. Arrowhead says connectivity problems can be ongoing without appearing on its public known-issues page.
Arrowhead previously attributed some launch-era Quickplay failures to matchmaking problems during very high player populations. That historical explanation should not be treated as proof of the cause of a current failure.

1. Fully restart HELLDIVERS 2, Steam, and Windows
- Exit HELLDIVERS 2.
- Quit Steam with Steam > Exit, not just by closing the window.
- Open Task Manager and confirm that Steam, the game, and GameGuard-related processes have closed.
- Start Steam again and try Quickplay or a direct friend invite.
- If the error remains, restart Windows.
This clears stale Steam sessions and incomplete matchmaking attempts, but it cannot repair corrupted files or fix a service outage.
2. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, restart Steam, and launch the game.
Verification repairs missing or damaged installation files, but it cannot resolve a backend outage. A small number of files failing validation can be normal because some authentication files are regenerated. Arrowhead specifically advises further troubleshooting when 10 or more files repeatedly fail validation; see its Steam validation guidance.

Arrowhead recommends clearing the contents of the game’s AppData folder for persistent technical problems. Back up the folder by renaming it first so you can restore it if necessary.
- Close the game and Steam.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%appdata%and press Enter. - Open Arrowhead, then Helldivers2.
- Rename the folder to
Helldivers2-backup, or delete only the contents of that folder. - Restart Steam and launch the game.
The usual location is C:Users<YourWindowsUsername>AppDataRoamingArrowheadHelldivers2. This resets in-game settings, including graphics and controls. Do not delete unrelated folders from AppData. This is a configuration reset, not a guaranteed fix.
4. Update Windows and hardware drivers
Install pending Windows updates, then update your GPU, motherboard/chipset, and network adapter drivers. Use Windows Update, NVIDIA/AMD/Intel for graphics drivers, and your motherboard or computer manufacturer for chipset and network drivers. Restart afterward.
This step is particularly relevant if the lobby error appears alongside crashes, launch failures, disconnects, or general instability. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
5. Check firewall, antivirus, VPN, and overlays
Security software can interfere with Steam, helldivers2.exe, or nProtect GameGuard. Arrowhead recommends exceptions for both HELLDIVERS 2 and GameGuard in relevant cases.

- Open Windows Security.
- Go to Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall.
- Allow Steam and HELLDIVERS 2 on the appropriate private network.
- If you use third-party security software, add exceptions for Steam,
helldivers2.exe, and nProtect GameGuard where applicable.
Find the correct executable location through Steam > Library > right-click HELLDIVERS 2 > Manage > Browse local files; do not assume Steam is installed on the C: drive.
For a brief diagnostic test, close a VPN, third-party firewall, antivirus web shield, traffic filter, Steam Overlay, hardware-monitoring overlay, RGB utility, or other low-level system utility. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. If protection is the cause, create a specific allow rule and re-enable it immediately.
6. Repair GameGuard only when it is also failing
GameGuard repair is an advanced, GameGuard-specific step—not a universal fix for every lobby error. Use it when the game also shows GameGuard errors or fails to launch.
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Manage > Browse local files.
- Open the tools folder.
- Run
gguninstas administrator. - After it finishes, run
GGSetupas administrator. - Restart the PC and try the game again.
These steps come from Arrowhead’s instructions for GameGuard Error 114. Do not randomly delete anti-cheat files. If the tools are missing or the reinstall fails, verify the game files and contact Arrowhead through Steam’s official support route.
7. Test direct joining, crossplay, and another host
Ask a friend to host a public or friends-only session, then join from the Steam friends list or the in-game Social menu. If possible, reverse the host and test with a third player.
If direct joins work while Quickplay fails, your installation may be healthy and the problem may be limited to matchmaking. It is not a guaranteed permanent workaround.
Crossplay is another variable to test:
- Open Options in HELLDIVERS 2.
- Find the crossplay setting.
- Turn crossplay off, restart the game, and test.
- Turn it back on and restart again if necessary.
Menu labels can change between builds. Disabling crossplay prevents joining players on the other platform, so restore it when testing is complete.

8. Test a different network
Use a phone hotspot or another trusted connection for one short test. If the lobby works there, investigate your home router, ISP filtering, VPN, DNS path, or firewall. Do not treat a hotspot as a permanent solution because of data limits, latency, and carrier-grade NAT.
If the error occurs on both networks, a local installation, account/session, or service-side issue becomes more likely. DNS changes, disabling IPv6, port forwarding, and NAT changes are not confirmed universal fixes in Arrowhead’s current general guidance, so avoid making permanent network changes without a specific reason.
9. Remove mods and reinstall only as a last resort
If the problem began after an update and you use mods, remove or purge them before verifying files. Arrowhead says incompatible modified files can cause outdated-file errors; for error 0x44415441, follow its official mod and file guidance.
If verification, the AppData reset, security checks, and network tests fail, reinstall HELLDIVERS 2. Reinstallation can replace damaged files, but it will not fix an outage, account problem, or incompatible network path. Back up the renamed AppData folder first if you want to preserve your settings for reference.

When to contact Arrowhead Support
Contact support if you cannot join any lobby—including friends’ private sessions—after the steps above, or if GameGuard repeatedly fails. Include:
- the exact error text and screenshots;
- the date and time of each failure;
- whether Quickplay, direct friend joins, crossplay, and solo play work;
- your PC specifications, Windows version, GPU, and driver version;
- whether you use a VPN or third-party antivirus;
- the result of Steam file verification;
- whether renaming the AppData folder helped;
- whether another network worked; and
- any logs requested by support.
That information helps separate a matchmaking incident from a repeatable PC, security, or network fault. Do not assume the problem is your installation merely because the public known-issues list does not mention it.
