Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To fix high ping or lag in an MMO, first check the game’s server status and region, then compare your connection over Ethernet with Wi-Fi. If the problem persists, use the game’s own diagnostics to determine whether it points to your PC or router, your ISP’s route, or the game servers. Avoid changing DNS, firewall, VPN, or port settings unless the symptoms or official support guidance point there.
Check whether the problem is network lag
Use the MMO’s network indicator or diagnostic graph, if it has one. Note whether ping is consistently high or jumps in spikes, and whether the game shows packet loss. Rubber-banding, delayed actions, and skills that respond slowly can indicate a latency problem. If the game stutters while its network indicators remain stable, the available guidance does not establish a network cause; consult the game’s performance or graphics troubleshooting instead. Guild Wars 2 Support describes latency-related symptoms.
Check the game’s servers and region
Look at the game publisher’s server-status page or official notices before changing your home network. An outage or server-side problem may affect many players at once. If the MMO lets you choose a server or region, try one geographically nearer to you when practical: distance can contribute to ping, though a nearer server is not a guarantee of a better route or lower latency. EA’s high-ping guidance identifies server problems and distance as possible causes; its specific menu directions apply to Battlefield 6, not MMOs generally.
Test your local connection
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you play over Wi-Fi, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet for a test, if possible. Wireless interference can contribute to lag spikes or packet loss, so a wired comparison helps determine whether Wi-Fi is involved. It will not fix latency caused by server distance or an upstream ISP route. Riot Games Support recommends a wired test because wireless conditions can be affected by interference from the environment and other radio signals. Read Riot’s PC connection troubleshooting steps.

If your PC lacks an Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is one way to make this test. It is optional, not a required upgrade.
Improve a Wi-Fi test
- Test close to the router to see whether a weak signal is a factor.
- Reduce competing network activity, such as downloads or streaming, while testing. Windows support also recommends checking for processes using substantial network bandwidth.
- If congestion appears to be the issue, ask your ISP about wireless-channel options for your router.
Poor Wi-Fi and multiple people using the same network are possible contributors to lag. EA’s guidance discusses Wi-Fi and network congestion, and Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page covers Windows checks.

- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Check the Ethernet cable
If you already use Ethernet, confirm that the cable is firmly seated at both the PC and the correct router port. Try another cable if one is available. These steps can identify a loose or faulty cable, but they will not address a distant game server or a problem further along the ISP route. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide recommends checking the connection and trying another cable.
Restart equipment and compare devices
A modem or router restart can restore an ISP connection or clear some equipment issues. Follow the manufacturer’s restart instructions; restarting the router temporarily disconnects everyone using its Wi-Fi.

Compare the affected PC with another device on the same network, or test the same PC on another available connection. If the issue appears only on one device, focus on that PC. If several devices have connection problems, the router or ISP may be involved. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not by itself identify the exact cause. Microsoft includes device comparison and equipment checks in its Ethernet guidance.
Use diagnostics to locate the route problem
When basic comparisons do not resolve the issue, use the game’s supported network diagnostic rather than repeatedly changing settings. A traceroute can help show whether a problem appears close to your PC or router, within the ISP network, or nearer the game servers; it is evidence to share with support, not a guaranteed diagnosis on its own. Guild Wars 2 Support recommends traceroute for investigating connectivity and lag.

DNS, firewall, drivers, and ports
DNS changes may help with particular connection or DNS-gateway problems, but the cited game-support guidance does not establish them as a universal way to lower in-game latency. Firewall rules, network drivers, and port configuration matter in some connection-blocking cases. Follow the game’s official steps and router documentation; do not broadly disable the firewall or open arbitrary ports. Riot’s guide covers DNS, drivers, firewall, and port troubleshooting.
Windows network reset
Do not start with a network reset for an MMO-only latency complaint. Microsoft presents it as a later Wi-Fi troubleshooting step: it can remove and reinstall network adapters, reset their settings, and require VPN or virtual-switch software to be set up again. Use it only when the broader Windows network problem and its side effects justify it. Microsoft explains the network-reset effects in its Wi-Fi guidance.
What to send support
If the problem continues, contact the game’s support team for an MMO-specific issue, or your ISP if multiple devices or services show connection trouble. Include the details that help distinguish a local issue from a route or server issue:
Quick Recap
- The game server or region you use and when the lag occurs.
- Whether the symptom is constant or comes in spikes, and what the in-game network indicator shows.
- Whether Ethernet changed the symptom compared with Wi-Fi, and whether other devices on the network are affected.
- The diagnostic file or logs requested by the game’s official support instructions, such as a WinMTR file when Guild Wars 2 Support requests it.
