Then isolate the cause before changing settings. Lowering matchmaking’s ping limit only narrows the data centers CS2 can select; it does not repair your connection.
First, tell network lag from PC performance
- In CS2, open Settings > Game > Telemetry and enable the relevant network and frame-performance indicators. Valve describes the HUD as a way to distinguish hitches caused by network conditions from those caused by computer performance: Valve’s Source 2 Telemetry HUD FAQ.
- Play until the hitch occurs, then compare its timing with ping, network-problem or missed-tick indicators, detailed loss and jitter if available, and frame performance.
- If frame performance worsens while network indicators remain healthy, investigate PC performance. If network indicators worsen at the same time, focus on the connection or route.
Telemetry can be configured to appear always, never, or when a selected threshold is exceeded. Adjust warning thresholds to suit your connection; there is no universal threshold that diagnoses every player’s problem.

If your ping is high, limit matchmaking’s server choices
Go to Settings > Game > Max Acceptable Matchmaking Ping and try a lower value. This setting restricts the data centers the matchmaker may choose. It can exclude farther locations, which may also reduce the number of eligible locations or affect matchmaking availability. It does not make the route to a chosen server faster or fix a faulty connection. Valve explains the setting in its CS2 network troubleshooting guidance.

Packet loss is not the only network problem that can disrupt a match. Jitter means packet timing varies; packets that arrive too late can harm real-time play even if a basic test reports no loss. As Valve puts it, “Jitter is a very important metric for describing the quality of a realtime network connection.” The Telemetry HUD FAQ explains why a loss-only test is incomplete.

In its November 12, 2024 update, Valve said CS2’s network-quality display was changed to measure how often a tick is missed because of network loss or jitter, with a detailed display for raw loss and jitter: the CS2 update. Treat the quality indicator and raw loss percentage as different measures; a poor quality indicator is not simply a raw packet-loss reading.
Test buffering as a trade-off
CS2’s Buffering to smooth over packet loss / jitter option may smooth some network disruptions, but it adds latency. Try a setting and compare play under similar conditions; revert if the added delay makes aiming or responsiveness feel worse. Valve’s network guidance describes the smoothing-versus-latency trade-off.

Compare Wi-Fi with the local wired connection
If you play over Wi-Fi, test closer to the router or, if possible, connect the PC directly with Ethernet. A wired comparison can help identify a Wi-Fi or router-side problem, but it cannot establish that the ISP or game-server route is healthy. Microsoft recommends Ethernet as a diagnostic comparison in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide. If your PC lacks an Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is relevant only if it lets you make that comparison.
Ping your default gateway in Windows
A successful ping to the default gateway shows that your PC can reach the local router; it does not test the path to a CS2 server. Microsoft’s Windows guidance explains how to find the gateway and use ping to check the local connection: fix network connection issues in Windows.

Do not treat one failed ping to a distant hop as proof that it is dropping game traffic. Some intermediate hops block ping requests, so a ping result alone can mislead; use the in-game indicators and repeatable comparisons to assess the problem.
Use comparisons to narrow down where the fault lies
- One device or several: Check whether other devices on the same connection also have trouble. Symptoms across devices point away from a CS2-only PC performance issue, though they do not identify the exact cause.
- CS2 or other online apps: If other games or online applications are affected too, the issue may extend beyond CS2. If only CS2 is affected, its server choice or route may be involved; the comparison alone does not prove which.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet: If wired play improves the same connection, investigate the wireless link or router. If it does not, continue checking the wider connection rather than assuming a cable will fix it.
- Ping or network quality: High ping is round-trip latency in milliseconds. Missed ticks, packet loss, or jitter describe delivery and timing problems; one metric does not substitute for the others.
When to contact your ISP
If the local Wi-Fi comparison and an Ethernet test do not resolve recurring symptoms, collect the times they happen and whether other devices or online games are affected. Include the CS2 Telemetry HUD’s network indicators, and detailed loss or jitter where available, when describing the issue to your ISP. This evidence helps distinguish a recurring connection problem from a hitch that appears tied to PC performance or CS2 alone.

Valve documents Steam Datagram Relay as a platform service that relays traffic over Valve’s backbone and can improve ping or connection quality in many cases: Steamworks Steam Datagram Relay documentation. That platform background does not mean players can toggle SDR to repair a particular CS2 route.
Menu names and telemetry options can change with CS2 updates. Valve’s network-quality explanation dates to November 2024; Microsoft’s linked troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
