On suitable-weather days, grazing can take the place of feed; use the bell to move animals as a group. Friendship and happiness are distinct stats, and the game’s official manual does not provide verified bond-point totals or a timetable for reaching maximum friendship.
What to do each day
- Make sure each animal is fed. Give it the feed appropriate to its type, or let it graze on a suitable day. The official game manual warns that neglect or improper feeding can hurt friendship, happiness, and health, and can affect byproducts and Animal Show scores.
- Pet your animals regularly. The manual says petting helps earn their trust. The secondary StratsWiki animal guide also reports that holding smaller animals can help build friendship.
- Brush larger animals. Brushing is a bonding action for larger animals; the manual says it increases friendship and health.
- Use the bell when you need to move a group. Ring it to herd animals toward the pasture or back through the barn door. The manual explains how the bell moves animals; StratsWiki additionally describes herding as a quick friendship action.
- Check the barn blackboard. StratsWiki reports that it displays friendship, happiness, and health, so you can tell bond progress apart from an animal’s condition.
The manual sums up the purpose of regular care: “Earn your animals’ trust with regular petting and brushing. The stronger your bonds, the higher quality byproducts they’ll make.”

Feed animals or let them graze?
Feed types vary by animal. StratsWiki specifies fodder for large animals and chicken feed for chickens; feed can be bought in town or made at a windmill, according to the official manual. StratsWiki also reports that hand-feeding gives an extra friendship benefit.

Friendship and happiness are different
Do not treat friendship and happiness as one meter. StratsWiki describes friendship as affecting byproduct quality and happiness as increasing the chance of plus byproducts. It also lists grazing and some food buffs as ways to improve happiness. The official manual confirms that both stats matter, but does not publish exact formulas or point totals for them.
What each bonding action covers
- Petting: applies broadly and is supported by the official manual as a way to earn trust.
- Brushing: for larger animals; the manual says it raises friendship and health.
- Holding: applies to smaller animals, according to StratsWiki.
- Bell herding: moves a group; the manual supports its herding function, while the friendship benefit is reported by StratsWiki.
What you can—and cannot—measure
The barn blackboard can help track friendship, happiness, and health, according to StratsWiki. Use those as separate indicators rather than assuming that a healthy or happy animal necessarily has the highest friendship. Neither the official manual nor the cited guide establishes a verified number of bond points per action, a daily cap, or a precise time to maximum bond, so a numerical optimization schedule is not supported.
