Start with the symptom, then work through reversible checks: compare your PC with the published requirements, update graphics drivers, check Steam game files and antivirus quarantine, and temporarily rule out background utilities or mods. For stuttering and low FPS, test a lower frame-rate cap or graphics settings one at a time. Hogwarts Legacy requires DirectX 12; forcing DirectX 11 is not an official fix and may cause problems.
First, identify when the problem happens
Before changing settings, note whether the game crashes on launch, during loading, or in a particular area; whether it stutters or simply runs at a consistently low frame rate; and any exact error message. Record your launcher, game build, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, available storage, graphics-driver version, recent game or driver changes, and whether you use mods. This context helps distinguish a repeatable problem from a one-off hitch. Official support cannot diagnose a specific PC without those details.

Check the PC requirements and DirectX 12
Steam’s Hogwarts Legacy listing specifies these PC requirements (accessed 2026). They are a baseline, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate on every system.

The resolution and frame-rate figures are Steam’s requirement notes, not measured results or a promise for your configuration. If your PC falls below a listed component, that can help explain performance limits, but it does not by itself identify the cause of a crash.

Portkey Games Support says launching the game requires DirectX 12 and discourages workarounds that force DirectX 11, which can lead to launch or gameplay issues. Keep the game on DirectX 12 rather than applying a DX11 launch option or unofficial workaround. See the PC Features FAQ.
Try safe checks for crashes and launch failures
- Update the graphics driver. Use the supported driver channel from your PC or graphics-card maker. If the crash began after a driver change, record that timing; avoid adding unrelated tweaks at the same time.
- Check antivirus quarantine. Look for Hogwarts Legacy files that security software may have quarantined. Restore only files you can identify as belonging to the game, and use a narrowly scoped exception only if needed; do not disable protection broadly.
- Close background applications temporarily. Exit overlays, monitoring utilities, RGB software, and other nonessential tools, then test the game. Special RGB keyboard settings are also worth temporarily disabling. Reopen tools one at a time if the issue changes so you can identify a possible conflict.
- Verify files in Steam. In Steam, open Library, right-click Hogwarts Legacy, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the check complete, then launch the game again. This checks the installed files; it does not diagnose hardware or guarantee a fix.
These checks follow the official PC Troubleshooting (Steam) guidance. Change one thing at a time where practical and note whether the symptom changes.

If the game stutters or has low FPS
Cap the frame rate before sacrificing image quality
Portkey Games Support’s PC Features FAQ says, “A lower framerate may reduce stuttering.” This is a general recommendation, not a guaranteed result. Try a lower frame-rate cap and assess whether motion becomes more consistent; a lower cap also means a lower maximum frame rate.
Adjust resolution or graphics quality gradually
Lowering resolution or graphics quality changes the work asked of the GPU and can affect CPU load as well. Make one adjustment, test in the same location and conditions, then compare. If the game becomes smoother, decide whether the stability improvement is worth the image-quality trade-off. No official benchmark establishes a universal FPS gain for a particular setting.
Confirm the game is using the intended GPU
On a system with more than one GPU, check that Hogwarts Legacy is assigned to the intended graphics processor. A game running on an integrated GPU instead of the discrete GPU can be a relevant configuration to investigate; the right selection depends on your PC.
Check storage expectations
Steam lists 85 GB of available storage and prefers an SSD, while allowing an HDD at minimum. If the game is installed on an HDD, moving it to an SSD may be a reasonable storage choice, but the listing does not establish an SSD as a universal fix for crashes, stuttering, or low FPS.

For mod-related crashes, test without the mods
If crashes began after installing or updating visual mods, remove the affected mods and their mod managers, then verify the game files in Steam. Portkey Games Support has warned that certain older third-party visual mods can break after engine changes and cause crashes. That warning applies to affected mod setups; it does not mean every mod or every crash has the same cause.

If background software still seems relevant, a Windows clean boot can help test whether another service or startup program is involved. Follow Microsoft’s official clean boot instructions carefully. It is a diagnostic state, not a permanent gaming setup: restore normal startup afterward, and do not disable security protections as a substitute for isolating a conflict.
What dated patch notes can—and cannot—tell you
Patch notes are useful context when your issue matches a specific reported problem, but they do not establish that a current crash has the same cause. The July 12, 2024 update and July 24, 2024 PC hotfix described a temporary HAGS workaround for a known crash on some systems; treat that as historical, issue-specific guidance rather than a general setting to change now. The October 15, 2025 PC patch notes (build 1569535) reported AMD stability changes and Intel XeSS/XeFG improvements. Those notes document changes in that patch, not a universal fix for current performance problems.
When the issue persists
- Keep a short record of the exact steps that reproduce the problem, location, error text, and whether it happens with mods removed.
- Include your PC specifications, Windows and graphics-driver versions, launcher, and game build when reporting the issue.
- For an unresolved, repeatable issue, use the official WB Games support request form and describe what you have already tested.
A crash, stutter, or low frame rate can have different causes on different PCs. Official sources do not publish controlled results that quantify how much these steps improve FPS, so treat each change as a diagnostic rather than a guaranteed performance fix.
