But “triple the frame rate” is a possible result in a particular setup—not a typical or guaranteed multiplier. Your laptop’s CPU, starting graphics hardware, connection, game, settings, resolution, and display route all affect the outcome.
Why an eGPU can make such a big difference
An eGPU setup pairs a laptop with a compatible high-speed connection, an enclosure, and a desktop graphics card. Some enclosures also provide power delivery and extra ports, but their features vary by model. If a game is struggling because the laptop’s integrated graphics cannot render frames fast enough, a desktop GPU can remove that bottleneck and produce a large uplift.

The size of the improvement depends on the starting point. Replacing basic integrated graphics is different from replacing a capable laptop GPU. In the latter case, the internal GPU may already be fast enough that the eGPU connection or another part of the system limits performance.
What “triple the frame rate” does—and doesn’t—mean
Three times the FPS is a conditional possibility, not a general property of eGPUs. There is no universal multiplier: performance changes with the game, resolution, graphics settings, hardware, and test configuration. Notebookcheck’s 2024 review of the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 4090 Gaming Box reports game-specific results across resolutions and settings rather than one figure that applies to every laptop or game: Notebookcheck’s RTX 4090 Gaming Box review.

A multiplier is meaningful only when the comparison identifies both systems and the test conditions. For example, a result should say which laptop and baseline GPU were used, which external GPU and enclosure were connected, the game and settings, the resolution, the display route, and whether the reported number is average FPS or a low-percentile figure. A desktop-versus-laptop comparison can also reflect differences between the CPUs and platforms—not just the eGPU link.
How the connection limits performance
An eGPU’s desktop graphics card communicates with the laptop over a connection with less bandwidth than a desktop motherboard’s full graphics-card slot. HP describes Thunderbolt 3 as a 40 Gbps connection using four PCIe 3.0 lanes, and compares those lanes with a desktop PCIe x16 slot. These are interface-level figures, not a direct prediction of lost FPS: HP’s eGPU guide.

Flat cable architecture with full-coverage shielding and advanced EMI materials to minimize interference and performance degradation
- Compatible Graphics Cards: Compatible with graphics cards of various sizes like RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX etc., no need to worry about graphics card length restrictions. 🔺Compatible Power Supply: Compatible with standard ATX power supply ONLY, dual screw mounting (top & bottom) for PSU stability
- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
HP characterizes four PCIe 3.0 lanes as 25% of a desktop PCIe x16 slot’s bandwidth. That comparison does not mean an eGPU delivers 25% of a desktop’s frame rate, or suffers a fixed 75% FPS penalty. Game workloads and system bottlenecks differ, so the effect has to be measured in the specific configuration.
One specific Thunderbolt 3 enclosure test summarized by Tom’s Hardware reported 2.33 GB/s in a PCI Express feature test. The report notes that enclosure design may contribute to the result, and that CPU comparisons differ between systems; it is not a general bandwidth figure for every enclosure or a game-performance estimate: Tom’s Hardware’s report on the RTX 4090 eGPU test.

Why the display you use matters
With an external monitor connected directly to the eGPU, the card can send rendered frames to that display. If you play on the laptop’s built-in display, frames must travel back to the laptop over the host connection. That return traffic can affect performance, so comparing the two display routes is useful when diagnosing a result. HP describes eGPU use with an external monitor, but the sources do not establish a fixed FPS gain from switching displays.
When the uplift is likely to be smaller
- The CPU is the bottleneck. If the laptop’s processor cannot prepare frames quickly enough, a faster GPU may not raise FPS much. Tom’s Hardware flags CPU mismatch as a caveat in its RTX 4090 comparison.
- The laptop already has capable discrete graphics. An eGPU has less room to help when the built-in GPU is already delivering strong performance.
- The connection or display path constrains the workload. Thunderbolt bandwidth is limited compared with a desktop PCIe x16 slot, and using the internal display sends rendered frames back across the host connection.
- The game or settings expose a different limit. Results vary by game, engine behavior, resolution, and graphics settings; a GPU-heavy test and a CPU-limited one can respond very differently.
How to evaluate an eGPU for your gaming setup
Before buying, compare the complete setup—not just the graphics card’s model—with the cost and convenience of a gaming laptop or desktop. Check each of these points against the exact laptop and enclosure model.

- Compatible graphics cards: Any GPU with available drivers on the official NVIDIA or AMD websites can be used. For NVIDIA, this ranges from the top-end RTX 5090 all the way down to the GTX 450. The same applies to AMD graphics cards. (Do not recommend Graphics Cards with Intel)
- Compatible devices: Most Windows10/11/Linux -based laptop, desktop, or console (including the Lenovo Legion Go) with a Thunderbolt port and an Intel/AMD processor can be used (some console with USB4 may require a BIOS update to enable USB4 functionality), Compatible with USB4, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4
- Transfer speed: The device uses the JHL6340 controller, delivering speeds around 22Gbps, compatible with both Win10 and Win11—offering better stability. Perfect for graphics work, video editing, AI art, and AAA gaming
- Flexible 4 power input options (choose one): CPU (4+4-pin), Molex, PD 3.0 (12V Max 60W), or DC5521 (12V Max 120W)
- Packing Includes: PCIE 3.0 x16 eGPU Dock withThunderbolt Port, High-quality Standard Thunderbolt 4 Cable (23.6 inch), a 24Pin Power Jumper Cable
- Laptop support: Confirm that the laptop supports eGPU use over the specific connection. A connector’s appearance alone does not establish compatibility.
- Host interface and enclosure: Check the enclosure’s interface, power delivery, ports, and any stated host requirements. For example, Sapphire identifies the GearBox 500 as a Thunderbolt 3 eGFX enclosure: Sapphire’s GearBox 500 product page.
- Graphics-card fit and power: Verify the card’s supported models, dimensions, power requirements, and connector needs against the enclosure’s specifications.
- Display arrangement: Decide whether you will use an external monitor connected to the eGPU or the laptop’s internal display, and compare performance using the route you actually plan to use.
- Realistic performance comparison: Look for benchmarks using a similar laptop, connection, game, resolution, settings, and display route. Compare average FPS alongside lows and frame-time consistency where available; a single headline average can miss stutter or uneven delivery.
- Total value: Include the enclosure, desktop GPU, any required monitor, and the laptop you already own. Compare that total with a gaming laptop or desktop that meets your performance needs.
How to read eGPU benchmark claims
Use the benchmark’s actual test details rather than treating a headline number as a prediction for your laptop. Results are tied to the tested hardware, software, drivers, game version, settings, and method. Notebookcheck’s game-by-game tables are useful for seeing how results vary within one review, but they do not establish a market-wide eGPU uplift. A reported difference between an eGPU laptop and a desktop also cannot automatically be attributed to Thunderbolt if the CPUs and platforms differ.
