Most Ghost image-upload failures come from one of four layers: the browser request, a reverse proxy such as NGINX, the Ghost process, or the configured storage destination. A 413 response usually means the proxy rejected the request before Ghost saw it; a Ghost 500 containing a write error points to permissions, disk space, or storage configuration; and an HTTPS redirect loop usually means the proxy is sending the wrong X-Forwarded-Proto value. Reproduce the failure with a small JPEG or PNG, record the status and exact error, then change only the layer that produced it.

How Ghost image uploads are routed

An image uploaded in the Ghost editor travels through a chain rather than going straight to a folder. The browser sends an Admin request, a reverse proxy may terminate TLS and enforce request limits, the Ghost process authenticates and handles the upload, and a storage layer writes the file. Ghost’s configuration documentation says that, by default, uploaded images are stored on the local file system; a storage adapter can instead send them to an external object or media service.

  • Browser and Admin request: The editor submits the file and displays the returned error. Browser messages are useful clues, but they do not identify the failing server layer by themselves.
  • Reverse proxy: NGINX or another proxy can reject an oversized request or mishandle HTTPS forwarding before Ghost receives any bytes.
  • Ghost process: Ghost must be running the expected version, service user, and production configuration.
  • Storage: The process needs to traverse the content path and write to the local images directory, or reach and authenticate to the configured adapter.

Keep these layers separate while troubleshooting. Raising a proxy limit cannot repair a directory that Ghost cannot write, and changing file ownership cannot make a proxy accept a request it has already rejected.

Capture one controlled failure first

Make one reproducible test before editing configuration. Use a small JPEG or PNG so that file size is not the variable. Open the browser’s developer tools if necessary, retry once, and record the result together with the server-side entries generated at that time.

  1. Write down the HTTP status, endpoint, and exact error text shown by the editor or network panel.
  2. Record the Ghost version, operating system, deployment method (Ghost-CLI, Docker, or a custom installation), reverse proxy, and active storage adapter.
  3. Note whether the test file succeeds while a larger file fails. This single comparison often separates a request-size problem from a write or adapter problem.
  4. Capture the NGINX access and error entries for the request, if NGINX is in front of Ghost.
  5. Capture the Ghost log line created at the same time. Ghost-CLI installations keep site logs in the installation’s content/logs directory.

Do not rely on a browser spinner as a diagnosis. A request can appear stuck while a proxy is retrying, while Ghost is waiting on storage, or while the browser has lost the response. The status, endpoint, and matching server log entries identify the layer that actually failed.

Fix an NGINX request-size rejection

Recognize the 50 MB default

Ghost’s official FAQ documents a default maximum image-upload size of 50 MB. When NGINX enforces a lower limit, the request is rejected before Ghost can process it. A 413 response, or an NGINX error that mentions the request body being too large, points to this layer rather than to Ghost’s content directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ghost’s reverse-proxy example uses this directive:

client_max_body_size 50m;

Set the value in the server or location block that actually handles the Ghost site. If your publication needs larger images, replace 50m with a deliberate limit appropriate for the server and the publication, rather than removing the limit. A larger allowance permits larger temporary files, longer processing, and more concurrent resource use.

Apply the change safely

  1. Back up the publication before changing infrastructure configuration.
  2. Open the NGINX virtual-host configuration for the Ghost site and add or edit client_max_body_size {VALUE}M;, using a numeric value and the unit expected by NGINX.
  3. Check every proxy layer. A cloud load balancer, container ingress, or second NGINX instance can impose a smaller limit even when the public-facing file looks correct.
  4. Validate the NGINX configuration with the normal configuration-test command for your installation.
  5. Restart only NGINX after the edit: sudo service nginx restart.
  6. Retry the same test image, then test a file just below the new limit. Keep the small-file test available so you can distinguish a size failure from a separate storage failure.

Do not assume that changing Ghost’s JavaScript or an Admin setting changes the proxy’s body limit. The proxy must accept the HTTP request first.

Prevent HTTPS redirect loops

When TLS terminates at NGINX, Ghost needs the forwarded protocol to identify the original request as HTTPS. Ghost’s reverse-proxy documentation says that X-Forwarded-Proto must be passed as https in this arrangement. An incorrect value can make Ghost redirect an HTTPS request back to HTTPS repeatedly, so the editor never completes the upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the proxy’s forwarding configuration and confirm that the public HTTPS listener sends the correct protocol value to Ghost. Fix this before changing upload limits: a redirect loop is a protocol-handling failure, not a file-size failure. After restarting the proxy, verify that the Admin page itself loads without repeated redirects and then retry the upload.

Repair Ghost and local filesystem permissions

Understand the Ghost-CLI account

Ghost-CLI creates a system user and group named ghost for the Ghost process. Its documentation describes normal non-root installations as using directory mode 775 and file mode 664, with ghost doctor hooks enforcing expected Linux permissions. The process must also be able to traverse every parent directory leading to the target, not merely write to the final directory.

The default local image location is the configured content path’s images directory, commonly:

/var/www/ghost/content/images

This path is a common Ghost-CLI default, not a universal Docker path. Confirm the production configuration and deployment layout before changing anything. A container may mount the content directory elsewhere on the host, and a custom installation may use a different content root.

Separate permission symptoms from proxy symptoms

If a small image fails with a Ghost 500 and a message about writing, saving, or the file system, inspect the Ghost service identity and content path. If NGINX returns 413 without a corresponding Ghost log entry, Ghost never reached the write stage. These are different repairs and should not be mixed.

Restore ownership without making the system unsafe

Back up the publication before changing ownership or modes. Do not recursively set everything to 777 and do not disable security controls to make an upload work. Broad, world-writable permissions hide the actual problem and increase the impact of a compromised process.

Ghost’s manual-backup guidance identifies images/, files/, and media/ as content that should be archived. After restoring or copying content, the documented ownership repair is:

sudo chown -R ghost:ghost content

Run that command from the Ghost installation context only after confirming that the target is the correct content directory. A mistaken recursive ownership change can affect unrelated files. After an ownership or Ghost configuration repair, restart Ghost with:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

ghost restart

If the installation uses Ghost-CLI, run its diagnostic tooling and follow the specific path it reports rather than applying a blanket mode change. Check the parent directories for execute (traverse) permission, the images directory for write permission, available disk space, and whether a security policy or read-only mount blocks writes. The expected 775/664 pattern is a baseline for ordinary non-root Ghost-CLI installations, not a reason to overwrite every custom permission scheme.

Check the configured storage adapter

Local file storage

With Ghost’s default local-file-store, an Admin upload is written to the local content path. Confirm that the adapter is active in the production configuration, that the configured content path is the one you inspected, and that the Ghost process can create and retain files in its images directory. A successful response followed by a missing image can indicate a path, mount, or cleanup problem rather than an NGINX limit.

External adapters

Ghost supports adapters that move uploaded media to services such as S3-compatible storage, Cloudinary, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, or BunnyCDN. The adapter named in production configuration must be installed and active, with valid credentials, endpoint or bucket settings, and a reachable destination. An adapter can be selected correctly while still failing because credentials expired, a bucket policy denies writes, a network route is unavailable, or the adapter is not present in the running release.

Storage arrangement Where the image is written Checks that matter Operational trade-off
Local file store The configured content path’s images directory Ghost user and group, parent-directory traversal, directory write access, disk space, and persistent volume Simplest path with no external credentials; durability and scaling depend on the server and its backups
External storage adapter The configured remote bucket or media destination Adapter installed and active, credentials, endpoint, network reachability, destination write policy, and production configuration Can improve durability and scaling, but adds network, credential, and adapter-maintenance dependencies

Do not “fix” an external-adapter failure by changing local directory modes unless the active configuration is actually using local storage. Conversely, a writable local folder cannot repair an adapter that Ghost is still trying to load.

Use logs to classify the failure

Match entries by timestamp and request. Ghost-CLI documents site logs under content/logs; NGINX provides separate access and error logs. The following mapping is a practical starting point:

Observed signal Most likely layer Next check
HTTP 413 or an NGINX message that the request body is too large Reverse proxy request limit Inspect client_max_body_size at every proxy layer and restart the affected proxy
HTTPS redirect loop while opening Admin or submitting an upload Reverse-proxy protocol forwarding Ensure X-Forwarded-Proto is https when TLS terminates at the proxy
Ghost 500 with a write, permission, or file-system error Ghost process or local storage Verify service identity, content path, parent traversal, target-directory write access, disk space, and mounts
Ghost error naming an adapter, credential, bucket, or remote endpoint Configured storage adapter Confirm the adapter is installed, active, authenticated, reachable, and permitted to write
NGINX temporary-file permission error Proxy temporary storage or filesystem permissions Inspect the specific NGINX temporary path and account; treat community reports as examples, not universal behavior

A community report has described NGINX temporary-file permission errors and noted that Ghost filesystem-write failures return differently from proxy rejections. That distinction is useful corroboration, but the exact log text and path on your server should control the repair.

Follow a narrow repair and verification sequence

  1. Back up first. Archive the publication database and content, including images/, files/, and media/, before changing ownership, modes, proxy settings, or storage configuration.
  2. Reproduce with a small file. Use a known-good JPEG or PNG. If it succeeds while a large file fails, stay at the proxy layer and inspect body-size limits.
  3. Inspect the active deployment. Identify whether the site runs through Ghost-CLI, Docker, or a custom process; locate the production configuration; and identify the service user, content path, proxy, and adapter actually used by the running process.
  4. Read both log streams. Correlate the NGINX access/error entry and Ghost log line with the failed request. A proxy-only entry means Ghost may never have received the upload.
  5. Apply one focused change. Increase the proxy limit for a size rejection, correct forwarded protocol for a redirect loop, repair the affected content path for a local write error, or correct adapter installation and credentials for a remote-storage error.
  6. Restart only the affected service. Use sudo service nginx restart after NGINX edits and ghost restart after Ghost configuration or ownership repairs. A restart of unrelated services can obscure which change fixed the problem.
  7. Retry progressively. Test the small image, then a larger image that is within the configured limit. Check that the editor displays it, that its public URL retrieves it, and that it remains present after opening a new browser session.
  8. Record the final state. Note the effective limit, content path or adapter, service account, and the log evidence that confirmed the fix. This makes the next incident faster without relying on guesswork.

The final checks are operational verification derived from Ghost’s layered architecture; there is no universal Ghost test script that proves every proxy and adapter combination is healthy.

Deployment-specific cautions

Ghost-CLI installations

Use the installation’s documented service account and paths. Ghost-CLI’s ghost doctor hooks are intended to enforce expected permissions, so inspect their findings before manually changing modes. The usual local content path may be /var/www/ghost/content/images, but verify the configured content root. After a confirmed ownership or configuration change, use ghost restart and review the new log entry.

Docker deployments

Do not apply Ghost-CLI paths or host ownership commands automatically. First inspect the container’s production configuration and volume mounts. The path Ghost sees inside the container can differ from the host path, and the container’s numeric user or group may not be named ghost. A write failure requires checking the mounted volume, its read/write mode, the container process identity, and persistence across container replacement. A proxy limit still applies outside the container if NGINX or an ingress handles the public request.

Custom process managers and proxies

Map every hop from the public hostname to Ghost. A second proxy, load balancer, or TLS terminator can add a smaller body limit or overwrite forwarded headers. Confirm which process owns the listening socket, which configuration is loaded after restart, and where each layer writes its logs. Changing an unused virtual-host file has no effect on the request.

Choose the fix by signal, scope, and risk

Fix Failure signal Layer changed Typical scope Persistence and risk
Raise client_max_body_size deliberately 413 or proxy body-size rejection Reverse proxy The affected server or virtual host, depending on where the directive is placed Persists after NGINX restart; larger limits increase resource exposure
Correct X-Forwarded-Proto HTTPS redirect loop Reverse proxy forwarding The TLS-terminating proxy route Persists in proxy configuration; incorrect values can keep Admin inaccessible
Restore targeted ownership and access Ghost 500 or local write error Ghost process and filesystem The configured content path or affected directory Persists on disk; broad recursive changes can damage unrelated files
Repair adapter installation or credentials Adapter, endpoint, authentication, or remote-write error Ghost storage layer The production release and its configured destination Persists with configuration and secrets; introduces external dependency management

Prevent the next upload incident

  • Keep the effective proxy limit documented alongside the Ghost deployment, including any upstream proxy that can impose a smaller value.
  • Back up the database and the images/, files/, and media/ directories before maintenance.
  • Monitor free disk space and verify that local content volumes remain writable after reboots, container replacement, or migrations.
  • Keep the Ghost service account, content path, and active storage adapter recorded in the runbook.
  • Rotate and validate external-storage credentials before they expire, and confirm that the destination policy still allows writes.
  • After proxy or Ghost upgrades, perform a small-image upload and retrieve its public URL from a fresh browser session.
  • Preserve the relevant NGINX and Ghost log context when closing an incident so future troubleshooting starts with a known symptom rather than a broad permission change.

When to stop changing settings

If a small image fails, the logs show no request reaching NGINX, and the browser reports a network error, investigate DNS, TLS, connectivity, or an upstream service before editing Ghost. If NGINX logs a rejection but Ghost has no matching entry, continue at the proxy. If Ghost logs a successful write but the image disappears, investigate the storage mount, adapter destination, cleanup process, or backup restoration rather than raising the upload limit again. Each layer has a different owner and failure mode; keeping the repair local reduces downtime and avoids unsafe global changes.
