A blank WordPress page is only a symptom. Confirm a native crash by matching the request time to Apache’s error log and the PHP-FPM pool log or service journal. Look for Apache’s Segmentation fault (11) or exit signal Segmentation fault (11) message and PHP-FPM evidence of signal 11. Once the crash is confirmed, enable WordPress logging on a staging copy, isolate plugins and themes, compare the PHP runtime and extensions, and collect a core dump with a gdb backtrace if the failure is reproducible. Do not treat a higher WordPress memory limit as a fix for a SIGSEGV.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What a segmentation fault means on a WordPress request
A segmentation fault, commonly shown as SIGSEGV or signal 11, is a native-process crash. Apache, PHP, an extension, or a linked system library has attempted an invalid memory access, so the operating-system process terminates instead of returning a normal PHP exception. PHP code can trigger the path, but the fault itself occurs below ordinary WordPress error handling.

The practical distinction matters because a blank browser response has many possible causes: a normal PHP fatal error, a timeout, a proxy failure, or a native crash. A blank response without matching runtime signals is not proof of a segmentation fault. Treat the browser as the starting symptom and the server logs as the confirmation.
Signs that point to a native crash
- The failing URL returns an empty response or the connection closes unexpectedly.
- Apache’s
ErrorLogrecords a child process exiting withSegmentation fault (11). - The PHP-FPM pool error log or service journal records
SIGSEGVor signal 11 at the same time. - The same request can be reproduced while other pages continue to work.
- The WordPress log ends without a PHP stack trace because the process died before PHP could write one.
Synchronize the clocks used by the browser test, Apache, PHP-FPM, and WordPress. Record the time in UTC, the complete URL including query parameters, the HTTP method, the logged-in user role, and whether the request came from the front end, an editor screen, an API endpoint, or an administrative action.

Confirm the crash before changing the site
Match one request to Apache’s error log
- Open the exact page or endpoint once, and note the UTC timestamp to the second.
- Check the
ErrorLogfor the virtual host or server. Apache documents a characteristic entry similar tochild pid ... exit signal Segmentation fault (11); it may also mention a possible core-dump location. - Compare the process-exit time with the request time. A nearby but unrelated SIGSEGV from another worker is not confirmation for this URL.
- Note the Apache child-process ID, the worker or event in which it occurred, and any path Apache reports for a core file.
Apache’s message is the strongest first confirmation that an httpd child died natively. The exact wording and whether a core path appears depend on the Apache version and operating-system configuration.
Check PHP-FPM independently
Inspect the PHP-FPM pool error log and the service journal for SIGSEGV or signal 11 around the same timestamp. A PHP-FPM crash can be recorded even when Apache only reports that its FastCGI peer disappeared. If Apache reports a crash but PHP-FPM has no corresponding event, establish which process actually died before changing configuration.
Keep a pre-change record
Before disabling anything, save sanitized excerpts from Apache, PHP-FPM, and WordPress logs. Record the PHP version, SAPI, loaded extensions, opcache settings, CPU architecture, distribution package versions, Apache version, MPM, loaded modules, and the relevant virtual-host configuration. This baseline lets you identify what changed and gives a maintainer enough context to reproduce the incident.
Enable WordPress diagnostics without exposing errors
Use a staging clone whenever possible. WordPress states that its debug tools are intended for local testing and staging rather than live sites. On the staging copy, add these constants to wp-config.php before the line that says WordPress debugging should stop:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
WP_DEBUG_LOG requires WP_DEBUG to be true and writes to wp-content/debug.log by default. Keeping WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY false prevents notices, warnings, and sensitive values from being printed into the HTTP response. If your configuration sends the log to a specified path instead, use that path when collecting evidence.

Reproduce once, then read the last successful event
- Clear or archive the existing staging debug log so the new request is easy to identify.
- Make one controlled request to the failing URL.
- Search
wp-content/debug.logfor the timestamp, plugin and theme names, PHP warnings, and the last hook, callback, shortcode, block, or query message written before the crash. - Compare that sequence with a working URL, such as the home page or an uncomplicated administrative screen.
A native crash may produce no final PHP message. An empty tail in debug.log does not clear the last plugin mentioned; it only means PHP did not get an opportunity to report the fatal event. Use the WordPress log to identify what was executing, then verify the conclusion against Apache and PHP-FPM evidence.

Isolate WordPress code methodically
WordPress identifies plugin and theme conflicts and incompatible PHP versions among common causes of critical errors. Isolation should be reversible and should change one variable at a time.
Test plugins in a controlled order
- On staging, disable all nonessential plugins while leaving the reproduction URL and its content unchanged.
- Request the page again and record whether Apache or PHP-FPM still crashes.
- If the crash stops, re-enable plugins in small batches. When a batch restores the fault, disable that batch and enable its members individually.
- For a suspect plugin, test the exact page, the home page, and an administrative screen. A plugin that only crashes one route may be exercising a particular shortcode, block, template callback, query, or media operation.
- Keep the plugin version, PHP version, extension list, and timestamp for each test. Do not update several unrelated plugins between two reproductions.
If disabling plugins does not change the result, restore the original plugin state on staging before testing the theme. This preserves a clear record of what has and has not been excluded.
Switch to a bundled default theme
Temporarily activate a bundled WordPress default theme on staging and request the same URL. Preserve the original theme and child-theme settings so the change can be reversed. A crash that disappears with the default theme points toward theme code, a child-theme override, a template, or a component invoked only on that page. A crash that persists shifts attention toward the runtime, an extension, the web-server path, or content processed independently of the theme.
Compare paths, not just one page
Test the failing URL against a simple PHP request, the home page, and an administrative route. Note whether the failure depends on a query string, a particular post type, a block, a shortcode, a large attachment, a logged-in role, or a specific HTTP method. A path-specific crash is useful evidence: it narrows the code executed before the native failure even when no PHP stack trace exists.

Check PHP versions, SAPI, and extensions
Do not assume that a WordPress memory-limit change addresses a segmentation fault. Memory exhaustion and native crashes are separate diagnostic possibilities. First capture the current runtime, then compare it with a supported PHP version and a matching extension set on staging.
Inventory the running stack
- PHP version and package build.
- SAPI: PHP-FPM, CGI, or an Apache module.
- Every loaded PHP extension and its package version.
- Opcache settings relevant to the request.
- CPU architecture and operating-system distribution.
- Apache version, MPM, loaded modules, and virtual-host settings.
Use the PHP binary and the web request as separate checks: a command-line PHP build can load different configuration files and extensions from the PHP process serving Apache. Confirm the values from the SAPI that actually handles the WordPress request.
Change one runtime variable at a time
On staging, compare the failing request under a supported PHP version while keeping the WordPress files, database, extensions, and relevant ini settings as similar as possible. If the crash disappears only after one extension is removed or updated, test that component in isolation and preserve the backtrace or log evidence. If a particular extension or linked library appears in a native backtrace, update, disable, or rebuild that component before replacing the entire web stack.
Keep a rollback copy of the previous package versions and configuration. A version change that makes the page work is a useful lead, not proof of the underlying defect; reproduce it again and document the exact combination that differs.

A core file and native backtrace provide evidence that WordPress and PHP logs often cannot. Core dumps can contain request data, credentials, tokens, and other secrets, so restrict access and copy them only to a controlled diagnostic location.

Prepare Apache to write a dump
- Choose a directory that the Apache process can write to and that is protected from public web access.
- Configure Apache’s
CoreDumpDirectorydirective for that directory. Apache’s directive documentation explains that httpd changes to this directory before dumping core. - Ensure the operating system’s core-dump policy permits dumps and that the shell core-size limit is not zero. Apache’s debugging guidance gives
ulimit -c unlimitedas an example before starting Apache. - Restart or start Apache through the same service mechanism used in production so the limit and directory settings apply to the actual workers.
- Reproduce the request once and check both the Apache log and the configured directory. On Linux, the operating system may redirect or name the dump according to its own core-pattern configuration, so the absence of a file in the directory does not by itself prove that Apache did not request one.
Apache may log a line similar to Segmentation fault (11), possible coredump in /tmp. Treat that path as a clue and verify the operating-system policy and file permissions rather than assuming the file is present there.
Use an unstripped PHP binary with gdb
PHP’s crash-diagnosis guidance requires a non-stripped PHP binary for a useful native backtrace. Open the core with gdb and the matching unstripped executable, then obtain the full backtrace with bt full. The executable, PHP packages, loaded extensions, and core must correspond closely; mixing versions can produce misleading symbols and frames.
Preserve the raw backtrace before trimming it for a ticket. Record whether symbols are present, which frame first enters an extension or library, and whether multiple threads show the same failing component. A backtrace that ends in the PHP engine does not automatically identify WordPress code as the cause; native extensions and libraries can be called from many unrelated plugins.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose and test the Apache PHP architecture
Apache’s PHP guidance prefers proxy_fcgi with PHP-FPM for Apache 2.4. The arrangement separates Apache request handling from PHP workers, makes failures easier to distinguish and diagnose, and supports threaded event or worker MPMs. The traditional Apache-module route, commonly called mod_php, is legacy, non-thread-safe, and tied to the prefork MPM.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
| Aspect | mod_php with prefork | proxy_fcgi with PHP-FPM |
|---|---|---|
| Apache relationship | PHP runs in the Apache process. | Apache forwards PHP requests to separate PHP-FPM workers. |
| MPM and threading | Non-thread-safe PHP is tied to the prefork MPM. | Supports threaded event or worker MPMs when the rest of the stack is compatible. |
| Crash diagnosis | A PHP crash can terminate an Apache child, making the boundary harder to distinguish. | Separate Apache and PHP-FPM logs make the failed process easier to identify. |
| Operational guidance | Legacy path; process recycling may be needed when PHP workers leak memory. | Preferred Apache 2.4 recipe in the project’s PHP guide. |
| Extension compatibility | Existing extensions must be checked against the installed PHP build. | Use the same extension set on staging first, then verify every extension under FPM. |
| Migration risk | No migration is required if the current stack is stable. | Changing SAPI and MPM is a broad change that requires a tested rollback path. |
Moving to PHP-FPM is not an automatic cure. A defective extension or shared library can crash PHP-FPM just as it can crash an Apache module. First reproduce under the existing stack, collect the strongest evidence available, and then test the same WordPress copy under PHP-FPM on staging with equivalent PHP settings and extensions.
A safe migration sequence
- Clone the site and database to staging, and record the existing Apache MPM, PHP SAPI, PHP version, extension list, and ini values.
- Reproduce the URL on the original staging stack so you have a baseline crash time and logs.
- Configure PHP-FPM and the Apache FastCGI proxy on staging, preserving the same WordPress files, database, PHP version where practical, and extension set.
- Run the failing request and the comparison requests. Save Apache and PHP-FPM logs for each attempt.
- Compare crash frequency, request behavior, and diagnostic visibility. If the crash follows one extension, library, or package, investigate that component instead of treating the SAPI change as the final fix.
- Keep the original configuration available for rollback. Do not migrate production until ordinary pages, administration, scheduled requests, uploads, and the previously failing URL all behave as expected.
Use the evidence to choose the next action
Apache and PHP-FPM both show signal 11
Prioritize the native runtime, extension set, and linked libraries. Capture a core dump if possible, compare package builds, and test the smallest extension or version change that the backtrace supports.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Apache shows a child crash but PHP-FPM does not
Determine whether the site is actually using PHP-FPM for that virtual host. The request may be using an Apache PHP module, a different pool, or another backend. Verify the SAPI from the serving request rather than relying on command-line PHP output.
The page is blank but neither runtime logs signal 11
Do not label it a segmentation fault yet. Investigate an ordinary PHP fatal error, timeout, upstream disconnect, proxy failure, or response-suppression issue. WordPress debug logging and the normal Apache and PHP-FPM error messages can distinguish these cases.
The crash stops when plugins are disabled
Use batch and single-plugin reactivation to identify the smallest reproducible combination. Preserve the failing content and runtime while testing, then update, replace, or report the responsible plugin with the synchronized logs and native evidence.
The crash stops with the default theme
Compare the theme and child-theme templates, callbacks, blocks, and shortcodes used only by the failing page. Keep the default theme test on staging; changing a production theme during an incident can create a second problem and destroy useful comparisons.
Recommended Free Tools
The crash survives plugin, theme, and PHP-version tests
Escalate with the evidence bundle. A reproducible native failure that remains after application isolation is appropriate for the PHP package maintainer, extension maintainer, hosting provider, or Apache operator, depending on the first meaningful native frame in the backtrace.
Quick Recap
Prevent a repeat incident
- Maintain a staging clone that uses the same PHP SAPI, extension set, and Apache MPM as production.
- Keep Apache, PHP-FPM, and WordPress logs with synchronized time settings and enough retention to correlate one request across services.
- Test PHP and extension updates against representative pages, not only the home page.
- Document the active SAPI, MPM, pool configuration, opcache settings, and package versions after every infrastructure change.
- Keep a tested rollback for PHP packages, extensions, Apache modules, and virtual-host configuration.
- Leave
WP_DEBUG_DISPLAYdisabled on production and remove temporary debug settings after staging diagnosis. - Enable core dumps only under a controlled incident procedure, protect the directory, and remove sensitive dumps after analysis.
A concise incident checklist
- Record the exact URL, method, user role, and UTC reproduction time.
- Match that time to Apache’s
ErrorLogand look forSegmentation fault (11). - Check the PHP-FPM pool log and service journal for signal 11.
- Enable
WP_DEBUGandWP_DEBUG_LOGon staging while keepingWP_DEBUG_DISPLAYfalse. - Read
wp-content/debug.logand identify the last successful callback or component. - Disable plugins in batches, then individually; test a bundled default theme.
- Record PHP SAPI, version, extensions, opcache, architecture, Apache MPM, and package builds.
- Configure
CoreDumpDirectoryand suitable core limits if the crash is reproducible. - Use a matching unstripped PHP binary and gdb to collect
bt full. - Test any PHP-FPM or extension change on staging, preserve rollback, and share a sanitized evidence bundle with the appropriate maintainer.
