Start by identifying your game edition, Windows version, and the exact point of failure; then try Windows’ compatibility troubleshooter before adding any third-party files. Graphics and input wrappers are optional, symptom-specific community workarounds—not official patches or guaranteed fixes.
Identify when and how the game crashes
Before changing settings or files, note the details that can narrow down the cause:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Game edition: Steam, GOG, or an original disc.
- Windows version: Windows 10 or 11, including the build if you know it.
- Crash point: startup, a menu, a particular level or cutscene, or after connecting an input device.
- Visible symptoms: any error message, flashing or other rendering problems, and whether the game closes or freezes.
Community reports describe different failure patterns and mixed outcomes, so a startup failure, a level-specific crash, and a graphics or input problem should not be assumed to share a cause.

Microsoft says that older apps can encounter compatibility problems as Windows changes and directs users to the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Its guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but it is general Windows advice—not a game-specific fix. Start with Microsoft’s Make older apps or programs compatible with the latest version of Windows instructions and follow the troubleshooter steps for your Windows version.
#1 Best Overall
Windows’ listed minimum requirements for the game do not guarantee compatibility with every current Windows build. Steam gives the minimum as Windows XP or newer, DirectX 9.0c, a 1.4 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, a DirectX 9.0c-compatible 3D graphics card with 256 MB VRAM, 2 GB of available storage, and a 16-bit sound card.
If the symptoms point to graphics, consider dgVoodoo2
A Steam community guide, “Run Indy3D on Windows 10/11,” describes a dgVoodoo2 setup for the Steam edition. It places the x86 wrapper files, dgVoodoo.conf, and dgVoodooCpl.exe in the game’s Resource folder. The guide’s author reported completing the game with dgVoodoo2 v2.82.3; that is one user’s result, not an official or independently verified fix for other editions or systems.
The guide also notes that a crash in the Palawan Temple chapter 7 may require a separate bug-fix solution. A separate Steam discussion describes one player resolving a flashing issue with dgVoodoo2, which is likewise an individual report. See the Steam guide to running Indy3D on Windows 10/11 and the Steam discussion about flashing and dgVoodoo2 for their specific instructions and context. Treat the wrapper as an experiment for graphics-related symptoms, not a universal crash fix.
If the crash seems tied to an input device, treat IndirectInput as an experiment
IndirectInput is a DirectInput wrapper intended to work around a Windows device-enumeration bug. Its README lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, but its documented game-support list names Myst 4: Revelation, not Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. Steam users have suggested adding dinput.dll to the game’s Resource folder, but reports are mixed, including crashes and reports that the wrapper did not help.
Because the game-specific evidence is uncertain, consider this only when the problem appears connected to device enumeration or input. Read the project’s IndirectInput README and the Steam discussion of crashes and input-wrapper results. The project does not document this game as supported, and the wrapper is not presented as a publisher-endorsed solution.
Make changes reversible and test one at a time
- Back up the game folder before adding or removing DLLs, especially files in
Resource. - Change one thing at a time. Try Windows’ compatibility guidance first; if you test a wrapper, do not combine it immediately with other file changes.
- Reproduce the same situation that caused the crash and check whether the symptom changed.
- Undo a change that makes things worse. Restore your backup or remove only the files you added.
- Reassess the crash point. A change that improves flashing or rendering does not establish a fix for a separate crash at a particular level or cutscene.
The available reports do not establish a definitive cause or remedy for every crash point. Steam’s technical-support page for the game points players toward community discussions and guides for gameplay and technical issues.

Game and compatibility context
Steam lists Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine as a Windows PC game released October 31, 1999, developed by LucasArts and published by Lucasfilm/Disney. Its store listing gives the minimum requirements above; those requirements are not a promise that the game works on every later Windows version. Check the Steam store listing for the edition’s published details.
