Start with the reversible checks: restart the computer and Steam, close overlays and other nonessential programs, compare your PC with the game’s minimum requirements, install operating-system and graphics-driver updates, and verify the Steam installation. Then use the exact symptom or error message to choose a narrower fix. A game that fails before opening, reports a missing executable, shows a black screen, or crashes after several minutes can have different causes, so changing every setting at once makes diagnosis harder.
The steps below are safest in the order shown. Steam’s general guidance covers Windows, Linux and macOS; the more detailed security, driver and cache checks are primarily Windows-oriented and come from a publisher troubleshooting checklist. A game-specific support page or error message takes priority over a generic remedy.

Use the symptom to choose the right starting point
Launch failures are not one defect with one universal cure. Steam Support notes that games may fail for many reasons and that the large number of unique hardware and software configurations makes some cases difficult to diagnose. First record what happens and whether other games are affected.

The last row is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee. A single broken game still deserves game-specific support, while a system-wide pattern should be included in any support request.

1. Restart and isolate the problem
- Save work in other applications and restart the computer. Do not merely close the game; a reboot clears processes and pending updates that can survive a normal exit.
- Start Steam again, wait for it to finish updating, and launch only the affected game.
- Before testing, close nonessential programs, recording tools, performance monitors, chat overlays, browser windows using substantial memory, and other launchers. Resource-consuming applications and performance overlays can affect stability.
- Change one variable at a time. If you disable an overlay, test the game before also changing a driver setting or security rule, so you know which action mattered.
Note whether the game fails before a window appears, opens and closes, displays an error, or runs briefly before crashing. Capture the wording exactly, including error numbers and the point in the game where the failure occurs. That small record is more useful than a general statement that the game “doesn’t work.”
2. Check requirements and install basic updates
Compare your PC with the game’s minimum specifications
Open the game’s store page or official support page and compare its minimum CPU, system memory, graphics hardware and operating-system requirements with your computer. Requirements differ by title and edition. Falling below minimum specifications can result in very low frame rates or failure to run at all. Meeting minimum but not recommended specifications may allow startup while requiring lower resolution, texture quality, shadows or other graphics settings.
Do not treat a short-term launch problem as proof that a component must be replaced. The fault could be a driver, installation, permission or security conflict. Hardware replacement is reasonable only after diagnostics establish a hardware problem.
Update the operating system
Install pending updates through your operating system’s own update panel. Steam’s general advice applies the relevant current updates for Windows, Linux or macOS. Restart afterward if the system requests it. Avoid unofficial update packages and “optimizer” utilities that promise to repair games automatically.
Update the graphics driver from its manufacturer
Install the current driver from the graphics-chip or computer manufacturer’s official support channel, then reboot. Outdated graphics drivers can cause rendering errors and can prevent some games from starting. On a laptop, check whether the manufacturer’s package is required for that model. A driver installer may offer a clean-install option; use it only when the manufacturer’s instructions or a persistent driver fault justify that choice.
Do not use third-party driver-updater claims as evidence that a driver is defective. Record the driver version before and after the change so you can report it or roll back through the manufacturer’s supported procedure if the problem begins after an update.

3. Verify the Steam installation
Verification checks the files Steam downloaded against the current game installation and can replace missing or altered files. It does not reset every local configuration file, and it cannot fix a PC that fails the game’s requirements.

- Open Library and right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish; Steam says it may take several minutes. Launch the game again after it completes.
Some files may be reported as failing verification because they are local configuration files that Steam does not replace. That message alone does not prove the installation remains broken. If the same launch error persists, continue with the symptom-specific checks rather than repeatedly running verification.
4. Get a more specific error than Steam provides
Launch the executable directly when Steam’s status is vague
If Steam says a third-party game is “currently unavailable” or appears to do nothing, open the game’s installation folder and double-click its main executable once. The exact folder depends on your Steam library location; from the game’s Steam properties, use the installed-files option to open or browse the local files. A direct launch may reveal a Windows message naming a missing runtime, permission problem or incompatible component.
Write down the complete message and then close the program. Do not download a replacement DLL from an unofficial website because a random file can be malicious, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete version of the required runtime.
Check prerequisite installers
Many games install prerequisite components such as a DirectX runtime, PhysX component or Microsoft C++ runtime during first launch. If an installer was canceled, blocked by security software or interrupted, the game may never reach its own window. Re-run the prerequisite supplied with the game or follow the platform, publisher or Microsoft instructions named by the error. Install only the component and version the official instructions identify.
When Steam reports a missing executable
Steam’s support guidance lists antivirus interference, corrupted files and a failed download as possible explanations. Check the security product’s quarantine or detection history for the game’s executable, restore it only if you have confirmed it is the genuine file from the official installation, restart Steam, and verify the files. If security software repeatedly removes the file, preserve the detection name and contact that vendor or the game developer instead of downloading an unrelated copy.

5. Handle security software without weakening your PC
Security software can occasionally block a game executable or flag a legitimate file as a false positive. The safer diagnostic path is to use the security product’s documented exception or allow-list process for the game’s installation, and to add only the specific file or folder required.
- Check the detection history first and save its name, path and timestamp.
- Confirm the game came from Steam or another legitimate distributor.
- If the vendor’s instructions call for a brief pause of real-time protection, use it only for the single launch test, disconnect from unnecessary networks when practical, and restore protection immediately afterward.
- Run a security scan if the file’s origin or signature is uncertain.
Never leave protection disabled as a permanent “fix.” If an exception is necessary, review it after the game or security software updates. A developer can often determine whether a flagged file is a known false positive when you provide the exact detection details.
6. Check Windows settings that can interfere
Administrator privileges
Some publisher checklists suggest testing Steam or the game’s executable with administrator privileges. This is a diagnostic test, not a default requirement. If it changes the result, investigate the folder permissions, controlled-folder protection or launcher configuration that caused the difference. Avoid permanently running every game as administrator because it increases the impact of a compromised process.

Open the executable’s properties and inspect the Compatibility tab. If Compatibility Mode was enabled by an old workaround, disable it and test again unless the game’s official support page specifically requires it. An inappropriate compatibility layer can alter graphics, permissions or input behavior.
Choose the correct GPU on a dual-GPU laptop
A laptop may have an integrated graphics processor and a discrete GPU. In the operating system’s graphics settings or the computer manufacturer’s control panel, confirm that the game is assigned to the intended processor. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions because menu names differ by Windows version and hardware. Test on AC power with the laptop’s performance mode configured as recommended by its manufacturer; battery-saving modes can limit graphics performance.
Background applications and overlays
Disable one overlay or background hook at a time, then relaunch. Recording, chat, frame-rate counters and hardware-monitoring tools can inject code into a game. If closing one resolves the crash, update or reconfigure that application rather than leaving every background service disabled.

Shader caches
Shader caches can become stale after a driver or game update. A publisher checklist includes deleting the game’s or graphics driver’s shader cache when the symptom points to rendering problems. Cache locations and safe deletion procedures vary, so follow the game or GPU manufacturer’s instructions. The first launch after clearing a cache may stutter while shaders are rebuilt; do not mistake that expected rebuild for a new crash.

7. Treat DirectX errors precisely
DirectX connects games and other software with video and audio hardware. A game can fail if it needs a component that is not present, but “install DirectX” is not a complete diagnosis.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version for those Windows releases and recommends Windows Update for DirectX updates. To inspect your installation, press the Windows key, type dxdiag, open the diagnostic tool, and read the DirectX version on the System tab. Use Save All Information if a support agent requests a report.
Older Windows releases and games that require legacy runtime components are different cases. If the error names a particular legacy component, follow the official game, platform or Microsoft instructions for that component. Do not assume the newest DirectX label alone supplies every older optional runtime a game may call.

Black screen immediately after launch
- Update and reboot after the graphics-driver installation.
- Check whether the game opened on the wrong GPU on a dual-GPU laptop.
- Disconnect unusual display adapters temporarily and test a standard monitor configuration.
- Use the game’s supported launch options or configuration reset only when its official support page documents them.
- Close overlays before changing graphics quality.
Change resolution, refresh rate or fullscreen mode one setting at a time. If the game becomes visible after a display change, record the original and working values for the developer.

Crash after several minutes
Check ventilation, fan operation and power behavior without opening the case or modifying firmware unless you know the manufacturer’s procedure. Ensure vents are unobstructed and test on the correct power adapter. Close resource-heavy programs and overlays, then compare a lower graphics preset with the original. A crash that occurs only in one demanding scene, after a consistent duration, or when the system is hot is useful evidence, not a diagnosis by itself.

Crash after a game or driver update
Verify files, clear the relevant shader cache using official instructions, and note the exact update date and driver version. If the manufacturer supports a rollback and the problem began immediately after the update, follow its rollback process rather than installing a driver from an unofficial archive.
9. Build a support report when the basic path fails
Steam notes that some configurations require deeper developer support or a local PC technician. Contact the game’s developer or the relevant platform with a concise report containing:
- Game name, edition, launcher and whether one game or several are affected.
- Operating-system name and version.
- CPU, installed memory, graphics processor and graphics-driver version.
- Security software and whether it recorded a detection.
- The exact error text, including codes and the executable named.
- When the failure occurs: before a window, at a menu, during loading, or after a reproducible number of minutes.
- Numbered reproduction steps and which troubleshooting steps you already tried.
- Useful screenshots or a short video, with personal information removed.
- Crash reports or log files generated by the game.
On Windows, attach the dxdiag report when requested. Some publisher support guides use a default CrashReport folder, but not every game stores reports there; use the location documented for your title. Do not send an entire personal folder or unrelated files when a support form asks for one log.
10. A safe decision order
Use this order when you are unsure what to try next:
- Low risk, broad scope: reboot, close nonessential programs, and record the symptom.
- Eligibility: compare minimum requirements and install operating-system and graphics-driver updates.
- Installation: verify Steam files and inspect security quarantine.
- Error-specific: launch the executable directly and repair only the prerequisite named by the error.
- Configuration: test GPU selection, compatibility settings, overlays, display modes and shader caches one at a time.
- Escalation: send the developer a complete report or seek individual technical help when the evidence points to a system-wide fault.
This sequence prioritizes reversible actions, limits security exposure, and preserves useful evidence. If an error identifies a particular cause, skip generic experiments and follow the official instructions for that cause.
