Turn on Game Mode for the HDMI input used by your console or PC. That is the most reliable first fix because it reduces the TV’s picture processing. If the delay remains, check motion smoothing, ALLM, HDMI routing, refresh rate, VRR, the cable, controller, game frame rate, audio path, and network conditions in that order.
The fastest way to reduce gaming input lag on a TV is to enable Game Mode for the HDMI input connected to your console or PC. Game Mode bypasses or reduces picture processing that can delay the image. Then connect the source directly to the TV, disable extra motion processing, confirm the correct refresh-rate and VRR settings, and test again.

If the delay remains after those checks, the problem may not be the TV. Controller latency, low frame rate, PC rendering latency, audio processing, and online network delay can all feel like input lag.

First, identify what kind of lag you have
Display input lag is the time between pressing a button and seeing the result on the screen. It is only one part of the complete controller-to-display chain. On a PC, system latency can include input, game, render, and display latency, as NVIDIA’s latency explanation describes.

| What you notice | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Buttons feel delayed in a console menu and in offline games | TV picture processing, HDMI path, source settings, controller, or TV hardware |
| Only online matches feel delayed | Network connection, server conditions, or the game—not usually the TV |
| Only one game feels slow | That game’s frame rate, settings, update, or controller support |
| Movement looks smeared or “soap opera”-like | Motion interpolation or other picture processing |
| Controls feel responsive but sound arrives late | Soundbar, receiver, Bluetooth audio, ARC/eARC, or A/V sync |
| The TV’s home screen and apps are slow too | Smart-TV software or system performance, which is separate from HDMI gaming latency |
For a reliable test, use a local game or the console’s system menu. Compare at least two games if possible. If only audio is delayed, do not treat it as display input lag: Sony notes that external audio equipment can add processing delay and recommends investigating the audio path separately (Sony audio and video sync support).
1. Turn on Game Mode for the correct HDMI input
Picture settings are often stored separately for each input. Turn Game Mode on while the TV is displaying the HDMI input used by the console or PC, rather than changing an unrelated global setting.
Samsung TVs
Open the TV’s Game Mode Settings and set Game Mode to On or Auto, depending on the model. Samsung says Game Mode reduces processing time by bypassing certain picture processors. Supported models may also provide a Game Bar with an input-lag setting. The Fastest option disables Game Motion Plus, which can otherwise add processing. See Samsung’s Game Mode and Game Bar instructions.

Look for Game Optimizer, Game Optimization, or, on some older webOS versions, Instant Game Response. These names and menu locations vary by generation. Some LG models also require HDMI Deep Color or Ultra HD Deep Color to be enabled for the relevant HDMI port when using higher-bandwidth signals. LG’s Game Optimizer and ALLM guide covers the model-dependent behavior.
Sony TVs
Set Picture mode to Game. On supported newer models, you may instead find Content type; set it to Game. Sony recommends Game mode to reduce image delay and, for certain older Android TV configurations, recommends turning Motionflow off when playing HDR games. See Sony’s input-lag troubleshooting guidance.
TCL TVs
With the gaming source selected, choose Game mode in the picture settings. TCL says this lowers image processing and reduces input lag, and its settings may be saved separately for each input. Menu names differ between Roku TV, Google TV, Fire TV, and model years; use the manual for the exact model if the option is missing. TCL documents the relevant settings in its TV settings guide.
Other brands use similar labels, such as Game, Gaming, Low Latency, or Game Optimizer. If you cannot find the option, search the TV’s model-specific manual rather than assuming the set has no low-latency mode.

2. Disable motion smoothing and unnecessary processing
After enabling Game Mode, check whether the TV still allows any of these features:
- Motion smoothing, motion interpolation, or frame insertion
- Samsung Game Motion Plus
- Sony Motionflow
- Cinema, film, or theater processing
- Noise reduction
- Heavy sharpening or edge enhancement
- Dynamic contrast and other automatic enhancement modes
Turn off the features that remain active, then test responsiveness after each change. Do not assume every setting has the same effect on every model: some TVs automatically disable processing in Game Mode, while others retain selected options. Sony identifies Motionflow as frame-inserting processing and recommends disabling it in applicable gaming setups (Sony’s guidance).
There is a trade-off. Game Mode may reduce image-processing options and make the picture look less polished than Cinema or Filmmaker mode. For competitive games, the lower delay is usually more valuable; for slower single-player games, you may prefer a higher-quality picture if the extra processing is acceptable.
3. Make sure ALLM is working
ALLM means Auto Low Latency Mode. When both the source and TV support it, the console can tell the TV to switch automatically into its low-latency mode. Sony describes ALLM as switching between low-latency and higher-picture-quality modes based on the HDMI source. PlayStation also says PS5 ALLM can reduce lag on compatible TVs and may appear under the name Game Mode (Sony’s ALLM explanation).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Enable ALLM or automatic gaming mode in the TV’s HDMI or gaming settings, if available.
- Enable ALLM or automatic low-latency mode on the console, if its settings provide that option.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the HDMI input you are actually using.
- Check the picture mode while a game is running. It should change to Game or Game Optimizer automatically.
Automatic switching is not universal. LG notes that recognition can fail depending on the console and HDMI terminal. If ALLM does not switch reliably, activate Game Mode manually for that input (LG’s ALLM instructions).
4. Connect the console or PC directly to the TV
For troubleshooting, connect the source directly to the TV. Temporarily remove the soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, splitter, and other intermediary equipment. These devices can create handshake problems or add signal processing, even when they are not the original cause of the lag.
Once the direct connection works, add devices back one at a time. If the delay or signal problem returns, investigate that device’s passthrough, gaming, or video-processing settings. Direct connection is also recommended in PlayStation’s PS5 4K and 120Hz troubleshooting guidance.

Use the HDMI port specified by the TV manual. Many TVs do not give every port the same bandwidth. Some Samsung models designate a particular input for 4K/120Hz, and PC connections may require Game Mode to be enabled manually (Samsung HDMI and Game Mode guidance).
5. Check resolution, refresh rate, VRR, and HDR
Higher refresh rates shorten the time between frames and can make controls feel more responsive, but 120Hz is not a universal fix. The game must actually render at a suitable frame rate, and the console, cable, HDMI port, TV panel, and selected picture mode must all support the signal. A game running at 30 frames per second cannot become a 120-fps game merely because the TV is set to 120Hz.
PS5 checks
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check:
- Resolution
- 120 Hz Output
- VRR
- ALLM
- HDR
- Video Transfer Rate
If 4K/120Hz flickers, drops out, or produces an unstable picture, Sony says setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 may improve stability, although this limits certain formats. Also check the TV firmware, HDMI port, cable, and direct connection. PlayStation’s PS5 4K/120Hz guide lists these checks.
VRR
Variable Refresh Rate synchronizes the TV’s refresh rate with the source’s changing frame output. On compatible games and hardware, it can reduce tearing and make uneven frame rates look smoother. It does not remove every form of latency, and its result depends on the TV’s supported VRR range, the source, the game, and the exact resolution and refresh-rate combination. PlayStation explains the feature and its compatibility requirements on its PS5 features page.
When testing VRR, change one variable at a time. First establish that Game Mode works at a stable 60Hz. Then test 120Hz, HDR, and VRR individually or in a documented combination. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem is latency, a frame-rate issue, or an unstable HDMI signal.
6. Replace the HDMI cable only when it is the bottleneck
An HDMI cable normally does not reduce the TV’s internal picture-processing delay. Replacing it is worthwhile when the existing cable is damaged, causes flickering or dropouts, fails to maintain a handshake, or cannot reliably carry the desired 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, or other high-bandwidth signal.

For a compatible setup, consider a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The HDMI Licensing Administrator says this cable category is designed for up to 48Gbps and features such as 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, and eARC. Look for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI Certification Label; certification can be checked with the HDMI Cable Certification app.
The buying rule is simple: purchase a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when your setup needs those signals or the current cable is unreliable. Do not buy an expensive cable expecting it to magically eliminate ordinary TV processing latency. If Game Mode is off, a new cable will not substitute for it.
7. Check the console, PC, game, and controller
Console and game checks
Compare the console menu, a local game, and another title. If only one game is affected, check its frame-rate mode, performance settings, updates, and controller configuration before blaming the TV. A game rendering slowly can feel like input lag even when the display is responding normally.
Test a wired controller or a second controller if the buttons themselves seem slow. A controller with a weak connection, low battery, interference, or a hardware fault can add delay before the TV receives the command.
PC checks
Confirm the operating system’s display refresh rate, the game’s actual frame rate, GPU drivers, V-Sync, frame caps, and any in-game low-latency setting. NVIDIA Reflex can reduce CPU/GPU rendering latency in supported PC games by coordinating game and GPU work, but it does not remove the TV’s display-processing delay (NVIDIA Reflex documentation).
For PC testing, avoid changing the TV, game, driver, and frame cap simultaneously. Record a baseline, enable Game Mode, and then compare frame rate and responsiveness after each adjustment. If the frame rate is unstable, improve that first; a low-latency TV cannot compensate for a long render queue.

If the TV’s home screen or apps are generally sluggish, follow the platform’s smart-TV troubleshooting steps: restart the TV, update the system and apps, and force-stop problematic apps where supported. Google TV documents those actions for general responsiveness (Google TV performance troubleshooting). They may improve menu speed, but they are not a replacement for Game Mode on an HDMI source.
Quick diagnostic decision tree
- Everything is delayed, including local menus: enable Game Mode, test another controller and source, update the TV, and inspect the HDMI path. If the TV itself remains slow, hardware may be involved.
- Only the image looks smeared: disable Motionflow, Motion Smoothing, Game Motion Plus, and similar processing.
- 4K/120Hz or VRR is unavailable: verify the correct HDMI port, TV and source settings, firmware, cable certification, and direct connection.
- Only sound is delayed: check A/V Sync, soundbar or receiver processing, Bluetooth, and ARC/eARC wiring.
- Only online play feels delayed: test local play and investigate network quality, matchmaking, and server conditions.
- Only a PC game feels delayed: check frame rate, GPU render queue, V-Sync, frame caps, drivers, and supported low-latency features.
When should you replace the TV?
Consider an upgrade only after testing Game Mode, a direct HDMI connection, a known-good cable, a second source or game, and appropriate console or PC settings. The TV is a likely limitation when it remains noticeably slow in its lowest-latency mode or lacks the signal features your setup requires.
Compare measured low input lag—not just a “gaming TV” label—and verify all of the following for the exact model and region:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Game Mode or an equivalent low-latency mode
- ALLM support
- VRR support and its actual operating range
- 4K/120Hz support on the HDMI port you will use
- Compatibility with your console, GPU, HDR format, and desired resolution
- Whether the mode disables picture features you care about
If your current set fails those checks, compare a gaming TV with low input lag only after confirming the individual model’s ports, refresh rate, VRR range, and Game Mode behavior. Manufacturer feature pages are useful starting points, but support varies by model, input, firmware, and region.
What will not usually fix TV input lag?
- Buying a premium HDMI cable by itself: it can enable a reliable high-bandwidth signal, but it does not bypass TV processing.
- Changing DNS or internet speed: this may affect online responsiveness, not the delay between a local controller press and the TV image.
- Installing PC cleanup software for a console: it cannot change the TV’s HDMI processing or the console’s video output.
- Increasing the TV’s sharpness: it can alter the picture without addressing the main source of delay.
- Setting the TV to 120Hz when the game runs at 30 or 60 fps: it does not make the game render additional frames.
The practical order is therefore: Game Mode, processing settings, direct HDMI connection, correct port, source output settings, VRR/ALLM, cable verification, then hardware replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to reduce input lag on a TV?
Enable Game Mode or Game Optimizer for the HDMI input connected to the console or PC. Then disable motion smoothing and other processing, connect the source directly to the TV, and verify the correct refresh-rate and VRR settings.
Can a new HDMI cable fix TV input lag?
No. An HDMI cable does not normally reduce the TV’s internal picture-processing delay. A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is useful when you need 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, or a more reliable signal, or when the existing cable is damaged.
How can I tell whether the lag is from the TV or the internet?
Test a console menu or local game. If those respond normally but online matches feel delayed, the network, server, or game may be responsible. If the sound alone is late, check the soundbar, receiver, Bluetooth connection, and A/V Sync.
Which PS5 settings should I check for input lag?
On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check Resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and Video Transfer Rate. Also confirm the correct TV HDMI port, a compatible cable, current firmware, and a direct connection.
The Bottom Line
Start with Game Mode on the active HDMI input. If that does not solve the delay, test local gameplay, remove HDMI intermediaries, disable motion processing, verify refresh rate/VRR/ALLM, and check the controller and game’s frame rate. Replace the cable only for high-bandwidth compatibility or reliability problems; replace the TV only when its measured latency or feature set remains the limiting factor.
