1. Finish the initial setup before downloading games
Turn on the Steam Deck, connect it to a reliable Wi-Fi network, and sign in with the Steam account that owns the games you intend to play. Internet access is required during the first setup so the Deck can connect to Steam and complete its initial configuration.

Your first-session target is simple:
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Sign in to the correct Steam account.
- Reach Gaming Mode, the console-style interface used for normal Steam browsing and play.
- Leave optional tweaks and Desktop Mode for later.
If the library looks empty, check the account before troubleshooting the Deck. A game appears in the library only when you are signed in to the Steam account that owns it or has access to it through the relevant Steam sharing arrangement.
2. Install SteamOS and Steam client updates
Before downloading a large game, check for updates:
- Open Steam.
- Go to Settings.
- Open System.
- Choose Check for Updates or the available software-update option.
- Install the update and restart the Deck if Steam asks you to.
The exact SteamOS version changes over time, so do not treat a particular version number as a permanent setup requirement. For a new owner, the important choice is the update channel: stay on the Stable channel unless you specifically want preview software and understand that beta releases can contain bugs or unfinished changes.

Updates can affect hardware support, compatibility ratings, controller behavior, and the Steam client itself. If a game or accessory behaves strangely on the first day, confirming that the system is current is one of the least disruptive troubleshooting steps.
3. Decide how you will use storage, then format a microSD card if needed
The Deck installs games to its internal storage by default. You can check available capacity and manage installation locations at Steam > Settings > Storage.
If the internal drive is enough for your current library, skip the accessory purchase. If you want a larger game library, choose a reputable UHS-I, U3/Class 3-or-better microSD card. Valve documents support for UHS-I cards rated Class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but the Deck cannot use their higher transfer speeds.

- Open Steam > Settings > System.
- Choose Format SD Card.
- Confirm only after checking that the card contains no files you need.
Formatting erases the card. Copy photos, documents, or other files to another device first. Once formatted, the card can be selected as an installation location through the Storage settings. A microSD card is convenient for expanding the library, although installing and moving games can take longer than using the internal drive.
If you are shopping, a Steam Deck UHS-I U3 microSD card is the most directly relevant first accessory for owners who need more space. It is not a required purchase for every Deck.
4. Check the compatibility label before installing or buying games
Do not assume that every Steam game works perfectly on the Deck. Valve uses four compatibility labels:

Open a game’s store or library page and read the compatibility details before committing to a large download. For a first game, Verified is the least complicated starting point. Playable can also be a good choice when the listed adjustment is acceptable.

5. Learn the controls, per-game layouts, and suspend/resume
The Deck combines familiar gamepad controls with features intended for PC games: two trackpads, a touchscreen, gyro input, and four programmable rear grip buttons. You do not need to master all of them immediately.
Start with the quick-access controls and try changing brightness and volume. Then test the controls in a game you know well. The trackpads can be particularly useful for mouse-driven interfaces, strategy games, and older PC titles. The rear buttons can be assigned to commands that are difficult to reach during play, but there is no universally best layout.

To inspect or change controls for one game:
- Highlight the game in your Library.
- Open the game’s details page.
- Open its Controller settings or controller-layout option.
- Review the community or official layouts available for that title.
- Choose a layout, or customize individual buttons and inputs.
Control preferences vary by game. A layout that works well for a first-person game may be awkward for an RPG, and a PC game may need trackpad or touchscreen input even when its basic controller controls work.
Learn suspend and resume
Press the Power button once while playing to suspend the game and put the Deck to sleep. Press it again to wake the device and resume. This is one of the Deck’s most useful console-like features for short play sessions.
It is still sensible to use the game’s own save system before long periods of storage or before changing major settings. Suspend/resume is a convenience, not a replacement for saving.
6. Explore Desktop Mode only when you need PC functions
Gaming Mode is enough for ordinary Steam purchases, downloads, updates, and play. Desktop Mode is optional and should not be treated as a required step in setting up a new Deck.
To switch to it, open Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop. Desktop Mode provides a Linux desktop environment based on Arch Linux. It lets you browse the web, manage files, install compatible applications, and use programs outside the main Steam interface.
Use Desktop Mode for a specific reason, such as:
- Adding a legitimately owned non-Steam game.
- Installing a compatible utility or application.
- Browsing and organizing files.
- Using the Deck as a general-purpose Linux computer.
Software must support the Arch Linux environment used by SteamOS; a Windows application is not automatically compatible just because it runs on a Windows PC. Avoid installing random cleanup, driver, or optimization utilities without first confirming that they support SteamOS.
Adding a non-Steam game
In the desktop Steam client, use Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. This creates a shortcut in Steam. It does not make Steam deliver the game’s updates, transfer ownership to your Steam account, or guarantee that the game will work on the Deck.

7. Prepare for storage, docking, and recovery before problems occur
The final first-day task is not buying everything at once. It is knowing which upgrades are optional and where recovery tools are located.
A dock or USB-C hub is optional
A dock or hub is useful if you want to connect the Deck to a television or monitor, use Ethernet, attach a keyboard and mouse, connect controllers, or add USB peripherals. The Deck works with many USB-C docks and hubs, but the accessory should provide USB-C Power Delivery passthrough if you want it to power the Deck while connected.

For display connections, use an appropriate active adapter where required rather than assuming that every passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter will work.
Gaming Mode may turn off the Deck’s built-in display when an external display is connected. More complicated workflows, including some multiple-display or mirroring arrangements, may require Desktop Mode.
If your setup calls for one, look for a Steam Deck USB-C hub with Power Delivery or a compatible dock. Treat it as a use-case purchase, not a required part of the Deck.
Know the recovery options, but do not use them casually
SteamOS includes several recovery paths, including a factory reset, rollback to a previous operating-system version in the relevant scenario, erasing user data, and a full SteamOS re-image.

For hardware repairs later in the Deck’s life, Valve identifies iFixit as a source for replacement parts and repair guides. That is an optional path for experienced owners, not a reason to disassemble a new Deck during setup. Opening hardware can introduce its own risks, so begin with software troubleshooting and official repair documentation.
What you can safely skip on day one
- Desktop Mode: unnecessary for normal Steam purchases and gameplay.
- A microSD card: useful only if the internal storage is not enough yet.
- A dock: needed only for a TV, monitor, wired network, or desktop-style peripherals.
- A replacement charger: current LCD and OLED configurations include a 45W power supply.
- A carrying case: current LCD and OLED configurations list a carrying case, so it is not automatically a necessary add-on.
- Windows PC cleanup software: SteamOS Desktop Mode is Arch Linux, and Windows-oriented utilities are not established as suitable Deck tools.
A simple first-session order
- Connect the supplied charger and turn on the Deck.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to the correct Steam account.
- Install system and Steam client updates; restart if prompted.
- Check internal storage and add a microSD card only if you need more room.
- Choose a Verified game and read its compatibility details.
- Test brightness, volume, controls, and suspend/resume.
- Leave Desktop Mode, docking, repairs, and advanced tweaks until a specific need arises.
