First identify which connection is failing: the host game’s connection to Jackbox’s servers, or a player’s browser connection to the host’s game. If the game is running and only one player cannot join, start with Jackbox.tv, that player’s browser, and device. If the host game cannot connect or stay connected, troubleshoot the host device and network instead. The two problems have different first steps.
That distinction matters even when the symptom sounds similar. A room-code error, a controller that will not load, a game that returns to its lobby, and a game that closes are not automatically the same problem. Use the visible symptom to choose a troubleshooting path rather than changing browser, router, and game settings all at once.

Start by locating the failure
Jackbox play involves two separate connections. The host runs the game, which needs to reach Jackbox’s game servers. Each player joins through a browser controller at Jackbox.tv. A room-code error on one player’s phone does not automatically mean the host game has lost its server connection, and a host-server error is not fixed by repeatedly refreshing every player’s browser.

- The host game cannot connect, returns to the lobby, or loses its server connection: troubleshoot the game, host device, and network.
- The game itself closes or crashes: treat that separately from a connection failure. On PC, Jackbox’s crash guidance includes checking overclocking and graphics drivers.
Work through the matching steps below in order. Avoid changing router or firewall settings until you know the host game’s edition, because Jackbox’s published port guidance varies by game generation.

When the problem is described as “lag,” note what is actually happening. Is the whole host game reporting a server connection problem, or is the game still running while one player’s controller struggles to join? The steps below address connection and room-code problems; Jackbox’s cited guidance does not promise that a particular network change will eliminate every kind of perceived delay. Testing another connection type can help identify whether the host’s network path matters, but it is a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed cure.
Fix a room code or controller that will not join
Enter the code from the host’s game screen
- On a separate phone, tablet, or computer, open Jackbox.tv.
- Enter the four-letter room code shown on the host’s game screen.
- Enter a player name and press Play.
The code is displayed in the game being hosted; it is not a general account or invitation code. The host also needs a second device to act as a controller. The device running the game is not used to enter the host’s answers. Jackbox says one user may log in per browser per device, so do not expect several players to share one browser session on a single device.
If a player is unsure whether they have the right code, compare what they typed with the four letters visible on the host’s screen. Ask the host to read or show the current code rather than relying on an old message or a code from a previous session. Then verify that the player entered a name and pressed Play. These are simple checks, but they help separate a mistyped or stale code from a browser connection problem.
For a group, each person should use their own supported browser session on their own device. The host’s game screen and the player’s controller serve different roles: the screen shows the shared game, while the browser is where that player joins and interacts. A host who wants to participate as a player should also have a second device available for the controller.
Refresh the controller connection
If the code and player name are correct but the controller does not connect, refresh Jackbox.tv and check the browser before changing host-network settings. Jackbox’s controller troubleshooting recommends confirming cookies and JavaScript are enabled, trying another browser, and temporarily disabling ad-blocking or other browser extensions that may interfere. It also suggests rebooting the router and disabling a VPN as troubleshooting checks.
Change one thing at a time where practical. For example, first refresh the page; if that does not help, try another browser. If a different browser works, the issue is more likely to be associated with the original browser’s support, settings, or extensions than with the host game’s room code. If the controller still cannot connect across browsers, the router and VPN checks are among Jackbox’s suggested next tests.
Jackbox.tv requires browser support for cookies, WebSockets, HTML5, and JavaScript. Jackbox’s support article lists these minimum browser versions:

| Desktop | Mozilla Firefox | 75+ |
| Desktop | Google Chrome | 79+ |
| Desktop | Apple Safari | 13.1+ |
| Desktop | Opera | 66+ |
| Mobile | iOS Safari | 13.4+ |
| Mobile | Android Browser | 101+ |
| Mobile | Android Chrome | 101+ |
These are the minimums in Jackbox Games Support’s supported-browser guidance, updated October 20, 2025, not a guarantee that every device or configuration will work. Browser support can change; if your version is near the listed minimum, check Jackbox’s current supported-browser page. An outdated browser, disabled cookies or JavaScript, or an interfering extension can prevent the controller from working even when the host game is connected.
The browser requirements apply to the controller at Jackbox.tv. They do not mean that a player should try to fix a host game’s server error by changing controller-browser settings. Conversely, if the host screen is working normally and only a single phone cannot join, checking that phone’s browser is a more relevant first move than opening router ports.
Clear browser data only as a later step
If refreshing, checking browser settings, and trying another browser do not help, Jackbox publishes instructions for clearing cache and cookies on mobile by device and browser. Follow the instructions for your particular browser rather than assuming the menu names are identical across devices.
Do not clear cookies or browser data while a game is in progress. Jackbox warns that doing so can prevent a player from rejoining the active session. Save this step for after the game has ended or when losing the current session is acceptable. This warning is especially important if a player is already in a live game and is only considering clearing data because the page seems stuck: try the less disruptive checks first.

When the game on the host device cannot connect or stay connected to Jackbox’s servers, Jackbox recommends restarting the game and host device, then checking the network. Use this sequence before making port changes:
- Close and reopen the game. This tests whether a fresh connection resolves the problem. If the game has simply lost contact with the servers, restarting the game is a first check Jackbox recommends.
- Restart the host device. The steps depend on whether the game is running on a computer, console, or set-top box. Restart the device that is actually running the game, not just a player’s phone or tablet.
- Reboot the router. Restarting the network equipment can help distinguish a temporary network issue from a game-specific setting. If only one controller has trouble while the host remains connected, return to the browser checks instead of assuming the router is the cause.
- Check VPN, firewall, or antivirus interference. Jackbox suggests disabling a VPN for testing and checking whether a computer’s firewall or antivirus is blocking the game. If a test changes a security setting, restore appropriate protection afterward.
- Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi, if possible. Try the other connection type to see whether the problem follows the network path. Ethernet is relevant only if the host device supports a wired connection, directly or through a suitable adapter; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.
These checks concern the host game’s server connection. If the host remains connected and only one controller cannot join, return to the browser and room-code steps instead.
For the Ethernet comparison, the point is to test the host device’s connection, not to purchase equipment as a general Jackbox remedy. If the host has an Ethernet port or a suitable adapter, a cable can make the wired test possible. If it does not, or if the problem is clearly limited to one browser controller, buying a cable is unlikely to address the relevant failure. A wired-versus-Wi-Fi test cannot by itself establish that a cable will solve a server, browser, room-code, or internet-provider issue.

When testing VPN, firewall, or antivirus interference, treat a change as a temporary diagnostic test. Jackbox identifies these as possible blocks to check; it does not mean every player should leave security features disabled. Restore protections after testing, and avoid broad or permanent network changes unless the specific game and problem call for them.
Check ports only for the right game generation
Jackbox’s server-connection article, dated January 3, 2024, gives different port guidance by game generation. Confirm which game or Party Pack is running before changing a router or firewall. Opening ports unnecessarily can alter network security without addressing the actual problem.
| Game generation covered by Jackbox’s guidance | Ports listed | Scope of the guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Games before Party Pack 7 | 80, 443, 843, 38202, 38203 | Jackbox lists these ports for games released before Party Pack 7. |
| Party Pack 7, 8, 9, and 10 | 80 and 443 | Jackbox says these packs do not use the high-numbered ports and use 80 and 443 if affected. |
The article does not establish port requirements for every later title. Do not assume that the Party Pack 7–10 instructions apply to newer games, or that every connection problem calls for port forwarding. If you are unsure which rules apply to your title, check Jackbox’s current support guidance for that game before editing network settings.
Port changes are not a first-line response to a code typo, a browser that lacks cookies or JavaScript, or an extension interfering with Jackbox.tv. They are only relevant to the host-game connection path and must match the edition covered by Jackbox’s instructions. If you do not know the pack or game version, identify it before making a router or firewall change; the older and Party Pack 7–10 guidance is not interchangeable with an unspecified newer title.
Tell a crash apart from a disconnect
A game that returns to its lobby with an error about reaching game servers points to connectivity trouble, according to Jackbox’s setup and crash guidance; it is not by itself evidence that the game crashed. A crash means the game itself stops running or closes. On PC, Jackbox separately suggests checking overclocking and graphics drivers if the game continues to crash.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse the visible symptom to choose the next step: a server-reachability message calls for the host-network checks, while a repeatable PC crash calls for crash troubleshooting. A player’s controller failing to join while the game continues normally is a third case, handled through Jackbox.tv and the browser.
This distinction prevents wasted troubleshooting. If the game has returned to the lobby and displays a server message, repeatedly changing graphics settings does not match the reported symptom. If the game closes on a PC rather than displaying a server error, repeatedly re-entering the room code does not address a crash. Keep track of whether the game stayed open, returned to the lobby, or closed entirely; that detail helps choose the right support path.

Remote players still need to see the host screen
For remote play, players need a way to see the host’s game screen as well as access Jackbox.tv for their browser controller. A remote screen-sharing service can provide that viewing connection. This is separate from the controller’s connection to the game: seeing the shared screen does not replace entering the room code on Jackbox.tv.
Remote players therefore need both parts of the setup: a view of the host’s screen, and a browser on their own device to enter the code and play. If a remote player can see the shared screen but cannot join, troubleshoot their Jackbox.tv browser session. If they can reach the controller page but cannot see what is happening in the game, check the screen-viewing arrangement rather than changing browser cookies or game ports.

When to stop changing settings
If the game remains unable to connect after restarts and network checks, or a controller still cannot join after browser checks, keep the diagnosis tied to the affected side of the connection. Note the game edition, host device, controller device and browser, the exact error or symptom, and which network checks changed the result before consulting Jackbox Games Support. That information helps distinguish a game-specific port question from a browser or host-network problem.
A useful troubleshooting note is short and specific: whether the host game is still running, whether the issue affects one controller or the whole game, which browser and device the controller uses, and whether the code is the one currently shown on the host screen. For a host connection issue, record the game or Party Pack and whether restarting the game, restarting the host device, rebooting the router, checking a VPN or security block, or comparing Ethernet and Wi-Fi changed anything. This makes it easier to explain what has already been tested without repeating unrelated steps.
Avoid making several router or browser changes together. If the problem disappears, you will not know which change mattered; if it continues, it becomes harder to return settings to their prior state. Follow Jackbox’s current title-specific instructions for technical settings, particularly ports, and use its device- and browser-specific cache directions if you reach that later step.

Why can one player not join when everyone else can?
If the host game is running and the problem affects one player, start with that player’s code entry, browser, and device. Refresh Jackbox.tv, confirm cookies and JavaScript are enabled, try another supported browser, and temporarily disable interfering extensions or a VPN as troubleshooting checks.
Which browsers work with Jackbox.tv?
Jackbox lists minimums of Edge 79+, Firefox 75+, Chrome 79+, Safari 13.1+, and Opera 66+ on desktop; iOS Safari 13.4+, Android Browser 101+, and Android Chrome 101+ on mobile. The browser must support cookies, WebSockets, HTML5, and JavaScript. Check Jackbox’s current supported-browser page if a version is near the minimum.
Should I clear cookies while a Jackbox game is in progress?
No. Jackbox warns that clearing cookies or browser data during a game can prevent you from rejoining that session. Try refreshing, checking browser settings, or using another browser first; reserve cache and cookie clearing for after the game or when losing the session is acceptable.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do if the host game cannot connect to Jackbox’s servers?
Close and reopen the game, restart the host device, and reboot the router. Jackbox also suggests checking for VPN, firewall, or antivirus interference and comparing Ethernet with Wi-Fi where the host device supports both.
Which ports does Jackbox use?
Jackbox’s January 3, 2024 server-connection article lists ports 80, 443, 843, 38202, and 38203 for games before Party Pack 7. It says Party Packs 7, 8, 9, and 10 do not use the high-numbered ports and use 80 and 443 if affected. The article does not establish requirements for every later title, so confirm current title-specific guidance before changing router settings.
Is a game-server error the same as a Jackbox crash?
Not necessarily. Jackbox says returning to the lobby with an error about reaching game servers indicates connectivity trouble, rather than a crash. A game that closes or stops running is a separate issue; for continued PC crashes, Jackbox suggests checking overclocking and graphics drivers.
Do remote players need anything besides Jackbox.tv?
They also need a way to see the host’s game screen, such as a remote screen-sharing service. The browser controller and the screen view are separate parts of remote play.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the failing connection: use Jackbox.tv, supported-browser, and device checks when a controller cannot join; restart the game, host device, and network when the host cannot reach Jackbox’s servers. Clear browser data only after a game, and check ports only against current guidance for the exact game edition.
