If a save has disappeared or will not load, protect every copy that still exists before you reinstall the game, clear local data, or download a cloud backup. The right next step depends on the symptom: a missing save may be tied to another user, account, edition, or storage location; a game that cannot save may lack permission to write files; and a genuinely corrupted save usually needs an intact backup to resume from.
Start by identifying where you last played and whether the problem is with one save or all saving. A save missing only on a second platform points toward cross-progression or account setup. A game that refuses to create any new save points toward a write or synchronization issue. A save that appears in the list but cannot be read may be damaged, incompatible with the installed content, or older than another usable copy.

First, protect the copies you still have
Do not repeatedly save over the same slot, delete save data, reinstall the game, or choose a cloud download until you know which copy is newest. Any of those actions can replace a usable version with an older one—or remove the only surviving copy.

- On Xbox: Do not clear local saves until you have confirmed that cloud saving is enabled and the console is online. CD PROJEKT RED warns that clearing local data can lose progress if either condition is false.
- On any platform with a cloud conflict: Avoid choosing a version until you have compared the available copies. If possible, preserve both before deciding.
Keep track of which account and platform each copy belongs to. A backup is useful only if it contains the progress you want and the game can load it. When comparing copies, note their timestamps and whether you remember playing after that time. A newer timestamp is a useful clue, not a guarantee that the save contains the progress you want.

For PC, copy the complete folder rather than moving or renaming individual files as a first step. Store the copy somewhere other than the game’s save location—such as another drive or an external device—so that a later reinstall or file change does not affect both copies. A USB flash drive can be used as separate backup storage; it is not a repair tool for a damaged save.
Identify which save problem you have
These problems have different causes and remedies. CD PROJEKT RED separates advice for an inability to save from cross-progression loading issues in its support index.
- The save is absent from Load Game: Check the active platform user and account, the save’s local folder or cloud service, and whether the installed edition matches the one used to create it.
- The save appears but will not load: Check edition and downloadable-content compatibility, then look for another intact manual save, autosave, checkpoint, or backup.
- The save is missing on another platform: Check cross-progression setup, the account used on both platforms, and whether a save was uploaded.
- The game will not create a new save: On PC, check whether security software is blocking the game from writing to the saves folder. This does not repair existing damaged save contents.
A save that is unreadable everywhere and has no intact backup is a different case from a file that simply is not showing up. The official guidance covered here does not establish a general method for repairing a corrupted save file in place.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To narrow it down, ask four questions before changing anything: Does the save show in Load Game? Can another save load? Can the game create a new save? Is the problem happening on the platform where the save was created, or only on a different platform? If only one save fails while others load, protect the failing file and try another copy rather than assuming the whole installation is at fault. If no new save can be made, focus on write permissions or the platform’s sync state instead of treating that as proof that older saves are corrupted.
Find missing saves on PC
Check the local save folder
In Windows, open File Explorer’s address bar and enter %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Look for the expected save files and copy the entire folder somewhere separate before making changes. The folder path is given in CD PROJEKT RED’s PC clean-install instructions; if your Documents folder is redirected or managed by a different Windows user, check that user’s corresponding folder as well.
If the folder is empty or does not contain the save you expected, verify that you are signed in to the Windows account used to play and check the relevant launcher’s cloud-save status. A save may be missing locally because it belongs to another user or exists only in a platform cloud copy. Do not delete or replace local data simply because the launcher reports a synchronization issue.
Use the exact Windows account that played the game when checking the path. The %userprofile% part points to the current user’s profile, so checking it while signed in to a different Windows account can lead you to the wrong Documents folder. If your Documents location is redirected, look for the game’s folder under that account’s actual Documents location as well. Make a copy before comparing or testing files; do not move a candidate save out of the folder just to see whether the list changes.

Also confirm which launcher and account you used to play. Local files and launcher cloud copies are separate places to check, and one may contain a copy the other does not. If a platform reports a conflict or pending sync, treat it as a warning that two versions may differ—not as confirmation that the cloud version is automatically the correct one.
Handle Steam Cloud conflicts cautiously
Steam explains that when local and cloud files have changed separately, it cannot automatically determine which version to keep. Its support team also says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve the conflict for the player. Compare available copies and their dates where possible, preserve both if you can, and choose the desired version only after review. A synchronization prompt is a choice between versions, not a repair tool.

Do not dismiss the prompt quickly or select an option simply because it says “cloud.” First work out which version reflects your latest play session. If both copies might be valuable, make separate backups where you can before allowing one to replace the other. Once one version has overwritten the other, recovering the displaced file may not be possible through Steam support.
If the game cannot write a save
When The Witcher 3 runs but cannot create new save files, check Windows Controlled folder access. CD PROJEKT RED advises checking whether the game is on the allowed-app list if this security feature blocks it. The support instructions identify Windows Defender and Bitdefender as examples and explain how to add the game; the precise controls can differ between security products and Windows versions.
After allowing the game, try creating a new save in a different slot. If that works, the issue was write access rather than proof that older save contents have been repaired. If it still fails, record the exact error and check the relevant security software’s block history before changing or deleting save data.
Keep this test separate from recovery attempts. Permission to create a new save addresses whether the game can write files; it does not restore a save that already fails to load. If security software blocked access, allow the game through the applicable control and test a new slot, then return to the backed-up copies to assess older progress.
Before a clean reinstall
CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install guidance says to disable the game’s cloud saves before performing its procedure and to back up the save folder to another drive or external device first. Follow that guide’s sequence rather than improvising folder deletion. Reinstalling can address game installation problems, but it does not reconstruct a corrupted save file.
Because the clean-install procedure involves changing game files and cloud-save settings, do not begin it as a first response to a single unreadable save. First confirm that the local folder has been copied elsewhere and that any platform cloud copy is understood. Keep the backup untouched while following the developer’s instructions; if the game still cannot load the save afterward, reinstalling has not repaired the save contents.

Cross-progression can make an uploaded save available on another platform, provided the setup and game-content requirements are met. CD PROJEKT RED says the game must be updated to the latest patch and the same CD PROJEKT RED account must be connected on both versions.
- Update The Witcher 3 on the platform that has the save you want to transfer.
- Open Load Game and use the Cross Progression control to connect the game to a CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save after connecting. The uploaded save is marked with a cloud icon, which gives you a visible sign that it has been uploaded.
- On the destination platform, connect using the same CD PROJEKT RED account and check Load Game for the transferred save.
Connecting an account alone is not the whole process: CD PROJEKT RED’s instructions call for creating a save so it can be uploaded. The developer describes the feature this way: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.”
For Nintendo Switch, players who used the older Steam/GOG cloud-save integration need to use cross-progression, introduced in update 4.04, to transfer saves. The older integration and cross-progression are not interchangeable transfer steps.

If the destination Load Game list remains empty, check the setup in order: confirm that both versions are updated, verify that both are connected to the same CD PROJEKT RED account, and confirm that you created a save after enabling cross-progression on the source platform. Look for the cloud icon on that save before switching platforms. Then check the content compatibility requirements below; a successful account connection cannot make an incompatible edition or missing expansion load the save.

It depends on having an uploaded copy and the appropriate game content on the destination. Keep the source copy intact until you have confirmed that the destination can see and load the progress you intend to continue.
Check the game edition and installed content
A save can appear to be missing when the installed version is a different product from the one that created it. CD PROJEKT RED says local console saves for the regular game and the GOTY/Complete Edition are not compatible as local saves because the console treats them as separate products. For moving progress from the base version, the developer points players to cross-progression.
Cross-progression has a related content requirement: the same game content must be present for the save to load. A base-game save can load in Complete Edition, but a Complete Edition save will not load in the base version unless its expansions and DLC are installed. Before assuming a save is corrupt, confirm which edition created it and whether the destination includes the necessary content.
Use this distinction when troubleshooting: the local-save incompatibility described for console editions is not the same as a damaged file. Likewise, the expansion requirement applies to cross-progression loads. If a Complete Edition save is being opened in a base-game installation, verify the expansions and DLC before concluding that the save is lost. If you are moving between console products, use the supported cross-progression route rather than expecting the separate local-save lists to merge.

Check the user and the game data
Nintendo’s general corrupted-save guidance recommends checking that the console and game are updated, restarting the console, using Check for Corrupt Data, and confirming that you are using the correct user profile. Deleting a user also deletes that user’s save data, so do not remove a profile as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Save Data Cloud is an option only when the title supports it and the user has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If those conditions apply, compare the cloud backup and console copy before restoring.
Follow the low-risk checks first: install available console and game updates, restart, and run Check for Corrupt Data for the software. Confirm that you opened the game under the user profile that owns the save. If the save belongs to another profile, changing users to test is safer than deleting or recreating a profile. Nintendo cautions that deleting a user deletes that user’s save data.
Compare timestamps before downloading
- Open System Settings on the Switch.
- Choose Data Management, then Save Data Cloud Backup.
- Select the intended user and The Witcher 3.
- Compare the displayed timestamps for the latest cloud backup and the console save.
- If the console copy is newer and contains the progress you want, back it up before replacing anything. If the cloud copy is newer and has the desired progress, download that copy.
Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered. The timestamp helps you compare versions; it does not prove which one contains the right progress, so use it alongside what you know about when you last played.

Do not start a download just to see whether it fixes the list. A download can replace the console copy, so first decide which version you want to keep. If the local console save is newer, preserve it before restoring an older cloud copy. If the cloud copy is the one with the desired progress, confirm the selected user and software before downloading it.
Troubleshoot local saves on Xbox
CD PROJEKT RED recommends a full power-down if the Xbox is having save trouble: turn off the console, unplug it for at least two minutes, reconnect power, and start it again. Allow time for the game to synchronize when it restarts if cloud saving is enabled.
Clearing local saves is a more destructive step, not a first check. CD PROJEKT RED warns that progress may be lost if cloud saving is off or the console is offline. Confirm those conditions before considering local-save deletion; if you cannot confirm them, do not clear the data.
CD PROJEKT RED’s Xbox save information page states that there are eight manual-save slots, excluding checkpoints and autosaves. That figure is specific to the Xbox support page and should not be assumed to apply to other platforms or later game versions.
After restarting, give synchronization time to complete rather than immediately shutting the game down or clearing local data. The safety of a local-save deletion depends on an enabled cloud save and an online console; if either is uncertain, preserve what is on the console. The eight manual slots are not the total number of possible recovery points, since checkpoints and autosaves are separate from that stated manual-slot count.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a recovery copy without losing the better one
Before restoring or loading a candidate save, assess it against the copy currently on the device. The safest choice is the version that contains the progress you want, belongs to the correct user and account, and is compatible with the installed edition and content. Cloud availability by itself does not mean the cloud copy is newest.
| Copy to check | What to verify | Risk to manage |
|---|---|---|
| PC folder | Correct Windows user, expected save files, and a separate backup of the full folder. | Deleting or replacing files before preserving them can remove the only usable local copy. |
| Steam Cloud | Which local or cloud version has the desired progress; preserve both if possible. | Steam cannot choose between separately changed copies or recover a lost save for you. |
| Cross-progression | Latest patch, same CD PROJEKT RED account, uploaded save, and compatible content. | An account connection without a newly created uploaded save may not provide the copy you expect. |
| Nintendo Switch cloud backup | Correct user and the timestamps for both the cloud backup and console save. | Downloading can overwrite local data, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered. |
| Xbox cloud copy | Cloud saving is enabled and the console can connect to sync. | Clearing local saves while offline or without cloud saving may lose progress. |
Manual saves are not the only possible fallback: an autosave, checkpoint, local copy, platform cloud copy, Nintendo backup, Xbox cloud copy, or cross-progression save may preserve enough progress to continue. Which options exist depends on the platform, account, edition, settings, and whether a copy synchronized before the loss.
Compare each candidate in the same order: first, does it belong to the user and account that played the game? Second, is it newer than the copy currently available, or does it match the progress you want? Third, can the installed edition and content load it? Finally, what will the restore action overwrite? These checks keep platform-specific systems separate: Switch timestamps, Xbox cloud sync, Steam Cloud conflicts, and CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression each have different controls and risks.
If you have more than one possible copy, do not treat a cloud label as a quality ranking. A cloud copy can be older than a local save, and a local copy can be under a different Windows user. A copy that is newer but incompatible with the installed content is not useful until that content issue is resolved. Keep the original or a separate backup until you know the selected copy loads and contains the expected progress.

What to do when a save is truly corrupted
If one save will not load, try another intact manual save, autosave, or checkpoint before changing installation files. If no local copy works, check only the cloud and cross-progression sources available for the platform and account, using the preservation steps above before restoring a different version.
There is no verified general repair method in the official guidance covered here for a save file that is unreadable everywhere and has no intact backup. Avoid treating reinstalling the game, changing save-write permissions, or repeatedly retrying the same file as a way to rebuild its contents: those actions address installation or save creation, not the data inside an irrecoverable save.
In practical terms, recovery means finding another intact version—not repairing the contents of a file that every available copy rejects. The available fallback might be a manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local backup, platform cloud copy, Switch cloud backup, Xbox cloud copy, or an uploaded cross-progression save. Whether any of these exists depends on the account, platform, edition, settings, and whether it synchronized before the problem occurred.
If no candidate copy exists, the official support steps do not promise a way to rebuild that progress. Preserve the unreadable file and any other remaining copies rather than experimenting on them. If you later find a backup or resolve an edition mismatch, you can test that copy without having first destroyed the original evidence of what remains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are The Witcher 3 save files on PC?
CD PROJEKT RED lists the Windows save folder as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Check it while signed in to the Windows account used to play, and copy the whole folder to another location before changing or deleting files.
Can I repair a corrupted Witcher 3 save file?
The official guidance does not establish a general way to repair a save that is unreadable everywhere and has no intact backup. Look for another manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local copy, or eligible cloud copy; reinstalling the game does not rebuild the save contents.
Why can’t The Witcher 3 create a save on PC?
Windows security software may be blocking the game from writing to its save folder. CD PROJEKT RED advises checking Controlled folder access and allowing The Witcher 3 if it is blocked. This can address new-save creation, but it does not repair existing corrupted saves.

Can I use a base-game save with Complete Edition?
A base-game save can load in Complete Edition. A Complete Edition save will not load in the base version unless its expansions and DLC are installed. On console, the regular game and GOTY/Complete Edition are treated as separate products for local saves; CD PROJEKT RED points players to cross-progression when moving progress from the base version.

The Bottom Line
Protect the copies you still have, identify whether the save is missing, unreadable, cross-platform, or impossible to create, and then use the matching platform steps. Check accounts, users, editions, cloud timestamps, and synchronization before restoring or deleting anything. If every copy is unreadable and no intact backup exists, the official guidance does not offer a general save-file repair method.
