League of Legends Not Updating? Fix Error 004, Error 7 & More

Start by noting the full error message or code: a failed League of Legends update can come from a connection or storage problem, an overloaded Riot server, or an unknown patcher error. Match the fix to the message, then use Riot’s official Repair Tool before escalating to support.

1. Identify the update error

Write down the complete message or error code shown by the League client. Riot’s error-code guide distinguishes different failures, so avoid treating every stalled update as the same problem.

Error 004: The client failed to patch. Riot lists a connection problem or insufficient disk space as possible causes; the code alone does not identify which one applies.
Error 7: Riot describes this as a server overload issue. Retry and check service status for your region rather than changing local game files first.
Unknown patcher error: Use the repair steps below, then collect logs and contact Riot Support if the error remains.

2. Check the connection and installation drive

For Error 004—or a download that stalls without a clear explanation—check both the internet connection and the drive where League is installed. A reliable connection does not resolve low disk space, and freeing space will not correct an unstable connection.

Confirm the connection is working reliably. If you suspect Wi-Fi interference, try a wired Ethernet connection as a diagnostic; it tests the connection, but will not address storage, damaged client files, or a Riot-side issue.
Check that the installation drive has enough free space to complete the update. Riot does not specify a universal amount of free space in its error-code guidance.

3. Check Riot service status for Error 7

When the client reports Error 7, retry later and check Riot’s League of Legends service status for your region. An overloaded service is not a local-file problem, so deleting or changing game files is not the appropriate first response. The status page can show whether Riot has reported an incident; it does not guarantee that every individual update problem is server-side.

4. Run Riot’s Repair Tool

Riot’s Fix My League guide recommends the Riot Repair Tool, which can re-patch or reinstall League automatically. Follow Riot’s current instructions for the tool rather than downloading an unofficial game fixer.

5. Reinstall only through Riot’s instructions

If the Repair Tool does not resolve the update and a reinstall is needed, use the platform-specific reinstall instructions in Riot’s Fix My League guide. Avoid starting with broad manual deletion of League or Riot Client folders: the right procedure depends on the platform and situation, and removing local files can also remove items such as replays.

6. Send logs to Riot Support for an unknown error

If the patcher reports an unknown error or the standard repair route fails, attach the League client logs to a technical support ticket. Riot’s Updated Client Patcher Issue instructions explain how to collect logs on Windows and Mac. For Windows, Riot gives the default installation location; for Mac, it gives the package path. Follow the instructions for your platform and include the logs with the ticket so support can investigate the specific failure.
