Legacy: Steel & Sorcery is now listed on Steam as Eldegarde. If multiplayer feels delayed, first determine whether you are seeing network lag, low FPS, frame-time stutter, or a server-side synchronization problem. Rubber-banding with a stable FPS counter needs a different fix from a GPU running out of headroom.
Use the tests below in order: update and verify the game, compare solo with multiplayer, test Ethernet, close overlays and downloads, then tune graphics and storage. Do not buy hardware until you know which category of problem you have.
Identify the type of lag first

These are triage signals, not absolute diagnoses. A multiplayer session can combine problems—for example, a locally rendered frame-rate drop can make network actions appear delayed.
1. Confirm the current game and update
Steam’s product page now uses the name Eldegarde, although players and older guides may still call it Legacy: Steel & Sorcery. It is the same Steam app, not a separate game. The current listing identifies Notorious Studios as the developer and publisher and lists the full release date as January 21, 2026, following Early Access from February 12, 2025. - Exit the game.
- Restart Steam.
- Wait for any pending download, update, or file validation to finish.
- Make sure every party member is on the same current build.
- Test one session before changing several settings at once.
Do not rely on an old guide’s build number; game versions change, and a specific current build should be checked immediately before publication.
2. Apply the low-risk fixes
Restart Steam, the PC, and the router
Leave the party, close the game, fully exit Steam, and restart Windows. If the symptom is rubber-banding or disconnection, power-cycle the modem or router as well. Test again before making further changes so you have a useful baseline.
Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Eldegarde.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Relaunch the game when the check completes.
Steam’s labels can vary slightly between client versions, but the file-verification option is in the game’s Installed Files settings.
Close overlays and background traffic
Temporarily disable or exit the Steam overlay, Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD recording overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner overlays, browser video, cloud-sync tools, torrents, downloads, and other game updates. Test after the major changes rather than assuming an overlay is permanently incompatible.

Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver from the manufacturer’s official site:

Use a clean driver installation only if a normal update does not help. Do not manually delete driver files as a first-line fix.
3. Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
The game’s official Steam requirements are relatively demanding. The minimum listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit, a Core i7-9700K or Ryzen 7 3700X, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1660 Super or RX 5600 XT with 6 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12, and 40 GB of storage. An SSD is recommended. Steam describes expected performance of 60 FPS at 1080p on Low for minimum hardware.
The recommended specification lists a Core i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 5600X, an RTX 3070 or RX 6800 XT with 8 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, and an SSD. The stated target is 60 FPS at 1080p on High. These are averages under stated conditions, not a guarantee of perfectly consistent frame times in every map, fight, or party configuration. Review the official requirements before judging your hardware.
4. Fix low FPS and stuttering
The goal is consistent frame time rather than the highest peak FPS. Change one major setting at a time and compare the same map or activity.
- Lower resolution or render scale if GPU usage is consistently near maximum.
- Reduce shadows and lighting quality.
- Lower effects, particles, and post-processing.
- Reduce view distance or foliage density if those options are available.
- Lower anti-aliasing or upscaling quality.
- Reduce texture quality only when VRAM is nearly full.
Textures usually affect VRAM capacity more than raw GPU load, so keep them higher when memory usage is comfortable. If the game offers DLSS, FSR, or another upscaler, start with Quality or Balanced. Try Performance only when the GPU is clearly saturated, and judge image quality and frame pacing as well as the FPS number. Reports that a particular DLSS mode helps are anecdotal and can vary by GPU, driver, and patch; one example is this community report.

If frame pacing is erratic, test an FPS cap slightly below your monitor’s refresh rate. Compare the in-game cap with a driver-level cap because the better option varies by system.
Move the game to an SSD
The official requirements recommend an SSD. A mechanical hard drive can worsen loading delays, asset-streaming hitching, and traversal stutter even when average FPS appears acceptable. It cannot reduce internet ping.

- In Steam, check where Eldegarde is installed.
- Move the installation to an SSD if it is on a mechanical drive.
- Leave free space available on the destination drive.
- Restart Steam after moving the game.
Test a lower mouse polling rate only as a diagnostic
Some community discussions have suggested that very high mouse polling rates may interact with frame pacing on certain systems. This is not a confirmed game-wide cause. If other changes fail, temporarily use a lower polling rate and compare the result, then restore it if there is no difference. See the community discussion for the anecdotal basis of this test.
5. Fix rubber-banding and delayed actions
Test Ethernet
Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet. For the test, avoid Wi-Fi repeaters and congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, pause cloud backups and downloads, and ask other household users to stop heavy traffic temporarily. Wi-Fi can have enough bandwidth for gaming while still suffering from jitter or interference.
Ethernet is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent requirement. Mesh systems, distance from the access point, Bluetooth congestion, and repeaters can all cause intermittent spikes.

Measure the local and external connection
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
ping 192.168.1.1 -n 50
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 50
tracert 1.1.1.1Use the Default Gateway shown by ipconfig; your router may not use 192.168.1.1.
- High or inconsistent ping to the router suggests a Wi-Fi, cable, router, or network-adapter problem.
- Stable router ping but unstable external ping points toward ISP routing, congestion, or a remote service.
tracertcan show where delay begins, but it does not prove that the final game server is broken. Some hops deprioritize diagnostic traffic.- Repeat short packet-loss tests and compare them with the time the game problem occurs.
Changing DNS may improve name lookup, but it normally does not repair packet loss, jitter, or poor routing during a match. A VPN is not a guaranteed latency fix: it can improve or worsen the route.
6. Compare solo play, party members, and modes
Run the most useful comparison tests before buying hardware:
- Does the problem happen solo?
- Does it begin only after inviting friends?
- Does the host experience it, or only one client?
- Do all party members see the same teleporting or delayed actions?
- Does changing who hosts alter the behavior?
- Does it occur in PvE, PvPvE, and Arena, or only in one mode?
- Does one map, class, encounter, or effect trigger it repeatedly?
If only one player is affected, prioritize that player’s PC, Wi-Fi, driver, background software, and route. If all players are affected simultaneously, a server, backend, or synchronization problem becomes more plausible. If solo is smooth but multiplayer stutters, do not automatically blame the internet: multiplayer can add simulation, effects, synchronization, and asset load.

If performance gets progressively worse after several matches, record the starting FPS and the FPS when the issue appears. Exit to the desktop and relaunch the game, then compare RAM and VRAM usage in Task Manager or a hardware monitor.

Also record whether the behavior is tied to a particular class, map, mode, or visual effect. Community reports describe possible worsening performance over multiple matches and possible class-specific behavior, but they do not establish a confirmed memory leak. Treat them as clues, not proof: one report discusses degradation over matches, while another discusses possible class-related behavior.
8. Handle anti-cheat and permissions carefully
The Steam listing identifies Easy Anti-Cheat and says it requires manual removal after uninstall. It also lists kernel-level anti-cheat and a third-party EULA. Do not disable or bypass anti-cheat, download unofficial DLLs, or use “lag fix” executables.
If the game fails to launch or authenticate after an update, repair or reinstall the official anti-cheat component through the game’s own installation or Steam files. Running Steam as administrator can be a targeted launch troubleshooting test, but it is not a general performance fix and is unlikely to solve ordinary stutter or network delay.
When the problem is probably game-side
Do not assume your PC is at fault when:
- Several party members experience the same issue at the same time.
- FPS is stable but actions and movement rubber-band.
- The problem started immediately after a patch.
- Your system exceeds the recommended specification and local connection tests are stable.
- The issue repeatedly affects one map, encounter, or effect.
- Restarting temporarily clears the problem, but it returns after several matches.
Official announcements document work involving backend stability, map performance, lighting, rendering, and teammate-related issues. The official announcement recap and Steam update history are the appropriate places to check for relevant changes. Player reports about stutters on high-end systems can help reveal patterns, but they are not confirmation of a universal bug: example report.

Before contacting the developer or posting a bug report, collect:
- The current Steam game name and build shown by your client
- Windows version
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and whether the game is on an SSD or hard drive
- Resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, and FPS cap
- FPS before and during the problem
- Ping or connection warnings
- Map, mode, class, region, and party size
- Whether solo play is affected
- Whether Ethernet changes the result
- Exact date and time, including time zone
- Reproduction steps, screenshots, or video
- Logs, if the official support channel requests them
“The game lags” is difficult to act on. “After three matches in Greenwood’s Castle, FPS falls from 60 to 25 on an RTX 3070, restarting restores performance, and all three party members see delayed actions” gives support a reproducible pattern.
