Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mass Effect Legendary Edition FPS drops are usually solved by updating the collection, choosing a stable frame-rate cap, testing VSync and ambient occlusion, and isolating overlays or driver issues. The Mako sections in Mass Effect 1 can still produce short frame-time spikes even on a capable PC, so the goal is to distinguish an engine-specific hitch from a system-wide performance limit.
Work through the steps below in order. Change one setting at a time, record what happens in the same scene, and revert any change that makes another part of the trilogy less stable.

First, identify what kind of drop you have
“Low FPS” and “stutter” are related but not identical. A sustained low frame rate means the game cannot render a scene quickly enough; a frame-time spike is a brief pause or hitch between otherwise smooth frames. Your remedy depends on which behavior you can reproduce.
- Sustained low FPS: The frame rate stays below your chosen target in many locations. Resolution, shadows, ambient occlusion, GPU selection, power settings, or outdated drivers are common suspects.
- Short spikes: The counter may look high on average, but camera movement or streaming causes a visible hitch. Frame limiting, VSync, overlays, background tasks, or a scene-specific engine behavior can be involved.
- Mako or planet-only drops: If Mass Effect 1 is smooth indoors but hitches while driving the Mako or exploring a planet, treat that as a narrow reproduction case rather than proof that your whole PC is too slow.
EA does not publish a universal FPS target for the collection. Its PC support material directs players to the requirements for their edition and to EA support channels, and confirms that the collection is available through the EA app and Steam.

Update the game and repair its installation
Install every available patch
Before changing configuration files, let Steam or the EA app finish all downloads for Mass Effect Legendary Edition. EA’s 7 June 2021 update says: “Improved PC performance across various hardware configurations, including on Virmire.” That update also removed the game’s launch-time AVX dependency and fixed a username-character issue that could prevent launching. A separate 17 May 2021 update listed additional stability, rendering, terrain-texture, lighting, and shadow improvements.
Those notes do not guarantee a particular frame rate, but running an older build can leave you troubleshooting a problem that has already been addressed.
Verify files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Mass Effect Legendary Edition, choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Launch the game and retest the exact location where the drop occurs.
Repair files in the EA app
- Open the EA app and go to Library.
- Open the three-dot menu for Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
- Choose Repair, allow the process to finish, and restart the game.
Use the launcher where you bought the game; do not run two repair processes at the same time. If the game will not launch at all, confirm that the current patch has finished installing before diagnosing FPS.

Choose a deliberate frame-pacing baseline
Set a cap your system can sustain
EA’s PC graphics controls include frame-rate caps of 30, 60, 120, 144, and 240 FPS, along with resolution, window mode, monitor selection, and VSync options. Start with a 60 FPS cap as a diagnostic baseline, even if your monitor can refresh faster. A cap that the system can hold consistently often feels smoother than an uncapped rate that repeatedly swings between high and low values.

- With amazing weapons, powers and tech, and much more flexible skill and weapon progression tree-you can replicate your play style to make you unstoppable against new, powerful alien enemies
- Open the game’s Options menu and locate the display or graphics settings.
- Select the monitor you actually use, confirm the intended resolution, and choose a frame-rate cap of 60 FPS.
- Play the same route for several minutes, including the location that normally hitches.
- If 60 is stable, test 120, 144, or 240 only when your hardware can sustain that level in the same scene. If it cannot, return to the lower cap.
Compare VSync on and off
VSync synchronizes rendered frames with the monitor’s refresh cycle. EA notes that it can limit the game to the monitor refresh rate and may add input lag. Test both states rather than assuming one is universally better.
- Keep the frame cap at 60.
- Run the same scene with VSync enabled and note whether camera movement and driving are smoother.
- Repeat with VSync disabled. Watch for tearing, uneven frame delivery, or more severe spikes.
- Keep the combination that produces the most consistent frame times on your display, not simply the highest instantaneous counter.
Do not change the cap, VSync, resolution, and several quality settings simultaneously. If you do, you will not know which adjustment affected the hitch.
Lower the settings most likely to expose a performance limit
Disable ambient occlusion first
EA specifically says that disabling ambient occlusion can improve performance on some systems. Turn it off before making large visual compromises, then retest the same location. If the frame-time spikes remain unchanged, restore it and move to the next test.
Test resolution, window mode, and shadows
- Keep your working frame cap and VSync choice unchanged.
- Reduce resolution one step and replay the same route. A clear improvement points toward GPU load; no change suggests that resolution is not the main trigger.
- Switch between fullscreen and borderless/windowed mode, testing each for a few minutes. Keep the mode with steadier delivery on your system.
- Lower shadow quality and retest. Planet surfaces, lighting, and outdoor scenes can make shadow changes easier to evaluate than indoor rooms.
Restore a setting if it does not help. The purpose of this sequence is diagnosis, not forcing every option to its lowest value.

Temporarily remove overlays
Disable overlays from the launcher, chat clients, GPU utilities, recording software, and other background tools one at a time. An overlay can add a separate frame-time workload or conflict with exclusive fullscreen behavior. Close nonessential applications, reproduce the drop, and then re-enable them individually to identify a trigger.
Check Windows, GPU selection, and drivers
Confirm the game is using the intended GPU
- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Add the game executable if it is not listed, open Options, and select the high-performance GPU when your PC has integrated and discrete graphics.
- Save the choice, restart the game, and repeat the same test.
On a laptop, connect the power adapter while testing and use the manufacturer’s performance power mode if available. Windows or the laptop firmware may otherwise favor battery life and reduce sustained clocks.
Update or cleanly reinstall the GPU driver
Check the driver supplied for your exact graphics hardware and Windows version. EA’s support material does not certify a particular driver release as the universal fix, so treat driver changes as a controlled test: note the current version, install the current stable package from the GPU manufacturer, restart Windows, and retest before changing more settings. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back to the previous stable package is a reasonable comparison.

Target the Mass Effect 1 Mako and planet hitch
Players repeatedly report stutter during Mako driving and planetary exploration. A Steam discussion contains anecdotal reports of symptoms changing after VSync or frame limiting, while a Reddit post by user darksheep0 describes smoother Mako driving after changing OneFrameThreadLag to false. The Reddit test was limited to Mako driving, still had some extreme drops, and warned that the change could affect other gameplay. Treat it as a reversible community workaround, not an EA-supported guarantee.
Back up the configuration file
- Exit the game.
- Open the installation’s
ME1BioGameConfigfolder and locateGamerSettings.ini. - Copy the file to another folder or rename the copy so you can restore the original.
Test OneFrameThreadLag=False
- Open the original
GamerSettings.iniin a plain-text editor. - Find the
[SystemSettings]section. - Add or change the line to
OneFrameThreadLag=False. - Save the file, launch Mass Effect 1, and drive the same Mako route used for your baseline.
- If other scenes become unstable, the game behaves worse, or the change has no benefit, close the game and restore your backup (or remove the added line).
Do not apply this edit to Mass Effect 2 or Mass Effect 3 unless you have separately confirmed that their configuration uses the same setting. The reported test concerns Mass Effect 1 and Mako driving.

No cited source shows that buying a new GPU, monitor, SSD, or controller is required to correct this problem. Hardware can affect the frame rate, but an engine-level hitch may remain even after an upgrade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to contact EA support
If the problem persists, collect details before opening a support case. Record:
- Whether the drop occurs in Mass Effect 1, 2, or 3.
- The exact location, such as Virmire, a specific planet, or a Mako route.
- Your resolution, window mode, frame cap, and VSync state.
- GPU model, current driver version, Windows version, and whether the game is running on integrated or discrete graphics.
- Whether the problem is sustained low FPS or a short frame-time spike.
- Which setting changes, file verification, and driver tests you already completed.
Include a repeatable route and a short description of what changed after each test. That gives support a usable reproduction case instead of a general report that the game “feels slow.”
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
