Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA Minecraft black screen is a symptom, not one diagnosis. The fastest reliable path is to identify whether the launcher or game window is failing, confirm whether you are using Java or Bedrock, update the game and display stack, then isolate drivers, add-ons, mods and video settings before changing hardware.
First, identify where the black screen begins
Write down the first stage that turns black. A black Microsoft Launcher window points toward launcher, Store, account or update problems. A launcher that works but a black Minecraft window points more toward rendering, a graphics driver, Java, a mod, an add-on or a video setting. If the title screen appears and the world view is black, the failure is later in the rendering path.

Also identify the edition. Java Edition is the PC-only edition with extensive mod support. Bedrock is the cross-platform edition, called Minecraft for Windows on a Windows PC, and it has add-ons and different graphics controls. A Bedrock add-on fix does not repair a Java runtime or mod problem.
| What you see | Most useful first branch |
|---|---|
| Launcher itself is black | Update the launcher through the Microsoft Store Library, then reinstall the launcher if it still does not render. |
| Game window is black but launcher is normal | Test the graphics driver, GPU assignment, video settings and content such as mods, shaders or add-ons. |
| Audio continues while the picture is black | Treat the game as possibly running with a failed rendering path; reset and repair the display driver, then test the GPU assignment. |
| Black screen with display-wide flicker | Use the Task Manager flicker test to separate a display-driver problem from an incompatible app. |
| Problem started immediately after a Windows update | Try rolling back the display driver before other driver changes. |
| Problem started after a Minecraft, launcher or driver update | Confirm the update completed, then test a current unmodified profile and the appropriate driver path. |
Update every part of the software stack
Do this before changing advanced settings. Mojang’s Bedrock graphics guidance starts with updates to the game, operating system and graphics drivers, and with checking the minimum requirements for the edition you are running.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Close Minecraft and the launcher.
- Install any available Minecraft update. For Bedrock, update Minecraft for Windows through its normal Store or Xbox app update path.
- Open the Microsoft Store, choose Library, and select Get updates so the Minecraft Launcher can update. The official launcher is intended to update automatically; the Library path is the manual fallback when it does not.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart the PC.
- Install the current display driver from your GPU manufacturer’s support channel. Minecraft’s official guidance names AMD, NVIDIA and Intel as the relevant manufacturers; select the package for your exact GPU and Windows edition.
- Start Minecraft again and note whether the launcher, title screen and world view now render.
If the PC does not meet the edition’s minimum requirements, a driver change alone may not resolve the issue. Check the requirements for the specific Java or Bedrock release rather than assuming that one edition’s requirements apply to the other.
Fix a Bedrock black screen by isolating add-ons and video settings
Mojang’s official Bedrock advice is explicit: after downloading updates, turn off add-ons and change video settings if the graphics problem remains. Do both as controlled tests rather than changing many options at once.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Disable add-ons temporarily
- Open the affected world or its edit screen and disable every active add-on.
- Leave add-ons disabled while you test the title screen and a world.
- If the picture returns, re-enable add-ons one at a time, restarting the test after each change. The first add-on that brings the black screen back is the likely trigger.
Keep a copy or backup of the world before making content changes. If every add-on is disabled and the screen is still black, continue with the display-driver and video-setting checks instead of repeatedly reinstalling content.
Change graphics options conservatively
Use the in-game video settings to undo recent rendering changes. Temporarily remove unusual graphics effects, return to a basic preset and test again. Record each change so you can restore a preferred setting after the fault is isolated. Mojang does not identify one universal setting that causes every black screen, so the useful result is whether a controlled setting change changes the symptom.

Fix a Java black screen by testing a clean profile
Java’s mod ecosystem creates more possible rendering variables than an unmodified installation. A current vanilla profile is the reference test: it tells you whether the base game can render before you troubleshoot a modded configuration.
- Disable all mods, shaders and OptiFine-style rendering changes for the affected installation.
- Launch a current vanilla profile with no custom resource or shader changes.
- Test the title screen and a new or known-good world.
- If vanilla works, add mods or rendering changes back in small groups, testing after each group. Keep the first failing combination as your suspect set.
- If vanilla is also black, leave the content disabled and continue with the Windows display tests and driver repair below.
Do not apply a Bedrock add-on procedure to Java files, and do not assume that working audio proves a mod is harmless. Audio can continue while the graphics path is failing.
Reset the Windows graphics driver
Windows includes a keyboard reset that does not require closing every application. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The display may blink or make a brief sound while Windows resets the graphics driver. Relaunch Minecraft and check whether the image returns.
This shortcut is a diagnostic and recovery step, not proof that the driver is the only cause. If it works temporarily but the black screen returns, proceed to the driver repair paths rather than relying on repeated resets.

Use Task Manager to distinguish a driver fault from an incompatible app
Microsoft’s Windows guidance says screen flickering is usually caused by a display-driver issue or an incompatible app. The Task Manager test helps separate those possibilities:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager while the rest of the display is flickering or black.
- Watch whether Task Manager flickers along with the desktop and Minecraft.
- If Task Manager flickers too, a display-driver problem is more probable.
- If Task Manager remains stable while the rest of the display flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. Close overlays and recently changed background applications one at a time, then retest Minecraft.
A completely black game window without desktop flicker can still be a game-rendering failure; the test is most informative when Windows itself is visibly flickering.

Repair, roll back or reinstall the display driver
Roll back after a Windows update
If Minecraft worked until Windows installed an update, use Device Manager’s display-adapter properties and choose the driver rollback option when it is available. Restart Windows and test Minecraft before making another change. Rollback is specifically aimed at a regression introduced by the recent driver update; it is not the preferred first move when the problem predates that update.
Update when no recent Windows change explains the fault
Install the current driver for the exact GPU model from AMD, NVIDIA or Intel. Use the manufacturer’s Windows-compatible package, restart, and test an unmodified Minecraft profile. Avoid installing a package for a different GPU or operating-system edition.

Uninstall and let Windows reinstall
If updating does not help, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the affected GPU and choose Uninstall device. Administrator rights may be required. Restart the PC so Windows can attempt to reinstall the display driver, then install the manufacturer’s current package if Windows does not provide a suitable version.

Working audio with no picture can mean that Minecraft is running while Windows sends rendering to a GPU path that is failing. In a June 2025 Microsoft Q&A case, the accepted troubleshooting step was to assign Minecraft, or the relevant javaw.exe, to Windows’ High performance graphics option, update the GPU driver and restart. This was a case-specific recommendation, not a universal explanation for every black screen.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add Minecraft or the relevant Java executable. For Java, this may be the
javaw.exeused by the affected installation. - Open the app’s Options, select High performance, save, and restart Minecraft.
- If the result is worse or unchanged, return to the same screen and switch the app back to its previous/default GPU choice, then continue with driver and content isolation.
Selecting the executable used by the failing profile matters: changing an unrelated Java installation will not change the process that Minecraft actually starts.

When the launcher is the black window
A black launcher is a different failure boundary from a black in-game world. First use Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. If the launcher still does not render after Windows and Store updates, reinstall the Minecraft Launcher from the Microsoft Store or its official download page, then restart Windows and test again.
Recommended Free Tools
If the launcher becomes usable but the game remains black, stop treating it as a Store-window problem and return to the edition-specific rendering checks. Conversely, if only the launcher is black and another current game renders normally, focus on launcher updates and installation rather than replacing the GPU.
Retest with variables under control
After each change, use the same test sequence: open the launcher, reach the title screen, enter a test world, and note whether audio and picture appear together. Keep a short record of the first black stage, edition, driver version, recent Windows or game updates, and whether mods, shaders or add-ons were enabled.
- Test a current vanilla Java profile or a Bedrock world with add-ons disabled.
- Change one driver, setting or content variable at a time.
- Use the Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B reset only as a check, not as a permanent workaround.
- Revert a GPU assignment or video setting that has no benefit.
- Do not replace a graphics card, cable or other hardware until software and content isolation has produced evidence that the fault follows the hardware.
No official source reviewed publishes a prevalence or success-rate statistic for Minecraft black screens. The absence of such a number is why the diagnostic order matters: the symptom is shared by launcher, edition, rendering, add-on, app-compatibility and display-driver failures, and there is no single guaranteed fix.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut for the driver portion of this process, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and includes a 2-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every Minecraft crash.
