If Minecraft Realms is not working, first identify whether you are a guest or the Realm owner, and whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition. Then check the game version and sign-in, invitation and Realm status, account permissions, and any console online-play subscription before troubleshooting your connection. The right fix depends on where the process fails.
Start by identifying the error
Note your platform, Minecraft edition, and the exact message or point of failure. For example, a Realm missing from the menu suggests a different problem from an invitation that will not open, an account-permission message, a subscription warning, or a connection error while joining. If other players can join but you cannot, focus first on your account, edition, and invitation. If nobody can join, ask the owner to check the Realm and subscription status.
Check the edition, game version, and sign-in
- Match editions: Java players need to join a Java Realm; Bedrock players need a Bedrock Realm. Java and Bedrock Realms are not interchangeable. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.
- Update the game: Install the latest release for your edition, then try joining again. Minecraft lists a current release as a multiplayer requirement.
- Refresh your sign-in: If the edition and version are correct, sign out of Minecraft, restart the game and system, then sign back in. On Windows, Minecraft also recommends signing out of Microsoft Store, Xbox, and other Minecraft services before signing in again. If you are joining someone else’s Realm
Confirm the invitation was accepted
You need an accepted invitation from the Realm owner. For Java Edition, accept the invitation and join from the Realms menu. For Bedrock Edition, accept it from the in-game Inbox or use the invite link. Minecraft’s instructions cover joining a Java Realm and accepting a Bedrock invitation.
A Java guest does not need to buy their own Realms subscription, and the host does not need to be online when the guest joins. If you cannot see the Realm after accepting, ask the owner to confirm that the invitation is for the account you are using.

Ask the owner to check the Realm
The owner needs an active Realms subscription, and the Realm must be open. Ask the owner to check both. If they own the Realm, Minecraft recommends closing and reopening it as a connection troubleshooting step; the owner can find the applicable instructions in the Realms connection guide.
If your account says multiplayer is unavailable
For a child account, the message “You cannot play online multiplayer because of how your Microsoft account is setup” points to account privacy settings. The adult who manages the family account needs to review the multiplayer permissions. See Minecraft’s child-account troubleshooting guidance.

If you play on a console
Check that the console account has the online-play subscription required for multiplayer on that platform. Minecraft’s Realms connection guidance names Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus. A lapsed subscription or an online-service outage can prevent connection; check the platform account and service status as well as the Realm itself. Requirements may vary by platform and region; Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements and connection guide provide the relevant checks.
If the problem is a subscription payment
Use these checks when the owner cannot buy or renew a Realm—not as a general fix for joining an already active Realm:

- Confirm the payment method is active and has sufficient funds.
- Check that the billing details entered match the payment method.
- Check that the payment country, your location, and the store region are consistent.

After checking access, invitations, account permissions, and subscriptions, test whether the device has a stable internet connection. Minecraft lists a strong, stable internet or LAN connection among its multiplayer requirements. If you suspect Wi-Fi instability and your device and router support wired networking, testing Ethernet can help isolate the network as a possible cause; it is an optional diagnostic, not a guaranteed Realms fix.

- Confirm whether the issue affects just your account or multiple players.
- Have each affected player verify their edition and latest game release.
- Ask the Realm owner to check the Realm’s open status and active subscription.
- Retry after refreshing your sign-in and testing the connection.
