Approach the lone skeletal horse only when you are ready to fight: within 10 blocks, the trap activates and summons four hostile skeleton horsemen. Defeat the riders without hitting the horses, then keep a surviving horse.
Find a skeleton horse trap
Skeleton horse traps are rare, so look for a lone skeletal horse while exploring during a natural thunderstorm. The storm is the event context; the trap may still activate after the weather clears. There is no verified spawn chance or reliable waiting time, so treat this as an occasional encounter rather than something you can summon on demand. Mojang describes the traps as rare and says lightning rods do not summon them: Mojang’s explanation of lightning rods.
Activate the trap and defeat the riders
- Prepare before approaching. Bring armor, a shield, and a bow if available. A lone skeleton horse can be the trap, not a safe opportunity to walk up unprepared.
- Approach within 10 blocks. Entering the trap’s activation radius triggers a lightning effect and produces four skeleton horsemen. The 10-block radius is documented in the Minecraft Wiki’s skeleton horse reference and Microsoft’s Bedrock trap behavior documentation.
- Fight the riders, not the horses. The skeletons are hostile. Aim carefully and avoid sweeping attacks or stray arrows that could hit the horses.
- Keep a surviving horse. Once the riders are defeated, the remaining skeleton horses can be kept.
Java and Bedrock: taming and saddles

These edition-specific details are based on the Minecraft Wiki reference; mechanics may differ if an update changes them. Mojang announced a saddle recipe of 3 leather and 1 iron ingot in Java snapshot and Bedrock beta/preview testing on May 13, 2025. That announcement does not establish that the recipe is available in every current release, so check your edition and version: Mojang’s saddle announcement.
Can a lightning rod summon one?
No. A lightning strike on a lightning rod never summons a skeleton horse trap. Mojang quoted Minecraft developer Nir “Ulraf” Vaknin explaining that the traps were meant to remain rare and that finding them constantly on a roof would take away their mystery. A rod can attract lightning, but it is not a way to farm these horses.
