How to Fix Minecraft’s io.netty.channel.AbstractChannel$AnnotatedConnectException

The suffix matters: a Minecraft connection timeout and a connection refusal point to different outcomes. Check the server address, port, and status before changing settings.

This Minecraft Java connection error has no single universal fix: the words after the exception are the key clue. “Connection timed out” means the client did not get a response; “Connection refused” means the destination responded but rejected the connection. Check the exact server address and port, then whether that server is online, before changing client or network settings.

What the error means

io.netty.channel.AbstractChannel$AnnotatedConnectException identifies a failed network connection, not its root cause. The suffix narrows down what happened. A timeout can occur when a server is unavailable from your connection—or when the address does not lead to a server at all. A Mojang bug-tracker moderator described the timeout as a generic message that can appear when the destination is unavailable or is not a server; the ticket is old, so it is useful for interpreting the message, not as evidence of a current Minecraft bug or fix: Mojang Bug Tracker, MC-120362.

An independent guide updated 15 September 2026 also distinguishes a timeout from an active refusal and lists possible causes such as an incorrect address, blocked traffic, server downtime, a wrong port, or a server not listening. These are possibilities to check, not a diagnosis of your particular connection: MinecraftSA connection-error guide.

Timeout or connection refused?

Message ending What it indicates Useful first checks
Connection timed out: no further information Your client did not receive a response from the destination. Confirm the address and port, then check whether the server is running and reachable.
Connection refused: no further information The destination responded but rejected the connection. Check that the server is listening at the intended address and port; ask its operator to verify the connection details.

The interpretation of these two outcomes is described in the MinecraftSA guide. Neither message, by itself, identifies which setting or device is responsible.

Work through these checks in order

  1. Read the entire error. Note whether it says “timed out” or “refused,” and preserve the complete message for the server operator if you need help.
  2. Verify the server address and port. Compare what you entered with the exact hostname or IP supplied by the server owner. If a port was provided, include it as instructed; do not assume a port value. An incorrect destination or port is among the possible causes described in the connection-error guide.
  3. Check server status. A server that is offline, restarting, or not listening at the address and port you entered may not accept your connection. If only one server fails, ask its operator to verify its status and connection details. If several unrelated servers fail, broaden your checks to your client and network; this is a diagnostic direction, not a guarantee about the cause.
  4. Retest after one relevant change. Correct an address or port, confirm that the server is online, or check a firewall or network restriction only when it is relevant to your setup. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affected the result.

If you are joining an Aternos server

Aternos documents a provider-specific address issue: its servers can start on different hosts, so its system uses SRV records. Its guidance is to enter the address and port shown by the server’s Connect button and, if that does not work, try the DynIP. Aternos also notes that modified clients that do not resolve SRV records can encounter a timeout. Follow Aternos’s directions for its servers rather than treating this as a universal Minecraft setting: Aternos Help Center: TLauncher (Minecraft: Java Edition).

If you host the server yourself

The right address depends on where the player is connecting from. Community troubleshooting guidance notes that the same computer hosting and joining can use localhost, while a player connecting only over the local network does not need port forwarding. Players connecting from outside the home network follow a different route: any port-forwarding setup must match the actual server and router configuration. The SpigotMC thread is anecdotal guidance, not an authoritative configuration specification, so do not copy another user’s sample values: SpigotMC self-hosting discussion.

What to send the server operator

If the checks do not resolve the connection, give the server owner or administrator enough detail to check the destination rather than reporting only the exception name. Include:

  • The full error text, including whether it says timeout or refusal.
  • The exact address and port you entered.
  • Your Minecraft edition and version.
  • Whether you can connect to other servers.
  • For a hosted server, the provider’s connection instructions; for a self-hosted server, whether you are joining from the host computer, the LAN, or outside the network.

What not to assume

The exception does not establish that Minecraft needs reinstalling, that Java must be changed, or that hardware needs replacing. The cited guidance supports checking the destination, address, port, server status, and relevant network restrictions; it does not establish blanket firewall disabling or a universal hardware remedy. Avoid making several unrelated changes at once, since that makes the result harder to diagnose.
