If that fails, check compatibility mode, security software, the game version, and the driver guidance for your GPU.
1. Remove mods, ReShade, and injected overlays first
Before repairing the installation, remove third-party software that injects files or graphics effects into the game. Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out the Steam Overlay, external rescalers or rerenderers, ReShade, mods, and injected DLLs as crash variables.
Temporarily disable or remove those additions, then continue with verification. Leaving altered files in place can prevent Steam from restoring everything it needs.
2. Verify Monster Hunter Wilds in Steam
- Restart your PC.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Monster Hunter Wilds and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files….
Steam will compare the installed files with the expected installation and replace missing or damaged files. Capcom recommends this even after a fresh installation. The procedure is documented in Capcom’s Wilds troubleshooting thread.

3. Use Capcom’s stronger verification procedure if normal verification fails
If ordinary verification does not stop the crashes, Capcom’s more aggressive procedure is to rename or delete the game’s installation folder before running verification again. Close Steam first, and make sure mods or personal files you want to keep are backed up.
A default full-game installation may be located at:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonMonsterHunterWildsFor the demo, the default folder is:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonMonsterHunterWildsDemoThese are not universal paths. If your Steam library is on another drive, find the actual location through Steam’s storage settings. After renaming or deleting the relevant folder, open Steam and run Verify integrity of game files… again so Steam can rebuild the installation.
4. Delete Wilds’ shader-cache files
Corrupted or stale game-generated shader data can cause startup or in-game crashes. Locate the folder containing MonsterHunterWilds.exe, then delete:
shader.cache
shader.cache2Do not use a fixed path if your game is installed elsewhere. Capcom identifies these files relative to the executable’s folder. The default full-game executable path is:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonMonsterHunterWildsMonsterHunterWilds.exeLaunch the game again afterward. Wilds should regenerate the deleted cache files. These are the game’s shader files, not necessarily the shader cache maintained by your graphics driver.
5. Check Windows compatibility mode
Right-click MonsterHunterWilds.exe, choose Properties, and open the Compatibility tab. Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for: if it is enabled, then select Apply and try the game again.
6. Check security software cautiously
Capcom notes that security software can occasionally flag Wilds or files it needs as malware. As a diagnostic step, you may temporarily disable security software while verifying the files or testing a launch. Re-enable it immediately afterward and add an appropriate exception only if you understand the security implications and trust the installation.

This is not a recommendation to leave antivirus or other security protection disabled permanently.
7. Confirm the game version and account for the January 2026 changes
Update Ver. 1.040.03.01, released January 28, 2026 at 2:00 a.m. UTC, changed several PC performance systems. It reduced shader-warming work outside the shader-compilation screen, adjusted texture streaming to reduce VRAM use, and added a new CPU tab under Options.
If you are following an older guide, its menu descriptions may not include Options → CPU. The update notes also state that the latest game version is required for online multiplayer and downloadable-content access.
A crash that begins immediately after an update may involve changed game files, regenerated shader data, a mod, or an injected DLL. That is why removing third-party injections, verifying files, and rebuilding the game shader cache are the most useful first checks.
8. Check the dated GPU-driver guidance
The January 2026 patch notes specified the following driver guidance for the most stable experience at that release:
- NVIDIA: GeForce driver 581.57 or newer.
- AMD: Radeon 25.9.1 or 25.9.2.
Capcom also said issues had been identified with AMD Radeon driver 25.10.2 and higher, while warning that driver guidance can change. Treat these as version-specific notes, not a permanent rule to install a particular driver forever.
Do not automatically follow older advice telling every NVIDIA user to roll back to 572.83. That recommendation appeared in an older troubleshooting contribution and does not replace the later dated guidance above.

The January 2026 notes describe increased CPU load around the Support Desk at Base Camp and the Grand Hub, particularly when unclaimed content is present. The documented result is reduced FPS in those areas, depending partly on CPU performance. It is not identified as a universal cause of PC crashes.

If the game merely stutters or loses FPS in those locations, that is a different symptom from a crash to desktop and should not be treated as proof that the same fix will solve both problems.
10. Avoid unverified launch-option fixes
Third-party guides commonly suggest launch options such as -dx11 or -d3d11. The Capcom troubleshooting instructions supplied for Wilds do not prescribe those commands. Do not present them as official fixes or required syntax. Remove unverified launch options while diagnosing the game so they do not add another variable.
11. Submit the crash report if the crashes continue
After a crash, Wilds normally creates a CrashReport folder in the game directory. A default installation may place it here:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonMonsterHunterWildsCrashReportThe exact location changes with your Steam library. Submit the report corresponding to the most recent crash. Official reports can include an exception code and module or call-stack information. For example, C0000005 means EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.

That code describes the type of crash; it does not, by itself, prove that one particular DLL, graphics card vendor, or driver is solely responsible.
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Remove mods, ReShade, injected DLLs, external rescalers, and other third-party injections.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game through Steam.
- Delete
shader.cacheandshader.cache2besideMonsterHunterWilds.exe. - Make sure compatibility mode is disabled.
- Check security-software detection and test cautiously with protection temporarily disabled.
- Confirm the game version and review the dated GPU-driver guidance.
- Collect the newest
CrashReportfolder and contact Capcom if the crash remains.
