MySQL error 1045 is an authentication failure. The server rejected the combination of account name, host and credentials sent by your client. Start with the smallest safe test: run mysql -u root -p and enter the root password when prompted. Then use the exact suffix in the error, the connection transport, the account’s host row and your MySQL version to choose the next step.

What MySQL error 1045 means
A typical message is ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'. It does not mean that the MySQL server is down. It means the server received a login attempt and refused authentication for the named account as seen from the named host.

Three pieces of the message matter:
- User:
rootis the account name the client presented. - Host:
localhostis part of the account identity. MySQL treats a root account associated withlocalhostas distinct from one associated with an IP address or another hostname. - Password status: the ending
using password: NOorusing password: YEStells you whether the client sent a password.
After installation, a root password may already have been assigned. In that case, the normal login form is mysql -u root -p, which asks for the password interactively instead of placing it in your shell command or history.
Use the error suffix to choose your first check
using password: NO
This says the client sent no password. The usual cause is running mysql -u root without the -p option, or using a script or shortcut that does not provide credentials. Retry interactively:

mysql -u root -p
Type the password at the prompt. Nothing is echoed while you type; that is expected. If the login succeeds, the problem was simply that the original invocation did not send a password.
using password: YES
This says the client did send a password, but the server could not authenticate it for that account and host. The password may be wrong, or an option file may be supplying an old password before you get a chance to type anything.
First retry with an interactive prompt. If the error still reports YES when you did not intentionally provide a password, suppress option-file loading for that one invocation:
mysql --no-defaults -u root -p
If this command works, inspect the MySQL client option files used on your system and remove or update the stale credential. Keep the password out of scripts and shell history whenever an interactive prompt is practical.

A safe troubleshooting sequence
- Record the complete error. Keep the exact user, host and
using passwordsuffix. Do not troubleshoot a generic “access denied” message without those details. - Try an explicit prompt. Run
mysql -u root -pand enter the password assigned during installation. - Eliminate hidden client settings. If a password appears to be sent unexpectedly, run
mysql --no-defaults -u root -p. - Test the intended transport. Compare the default
localhostconnection with an explicit TCP connection to127.0.0.1. - Check the matching account row. MySQL matches both
UserandHost; verify that the row for the connection you are making exists and uses the expected authentication plugin. - Reset only when the password is genuinely lost. Use the official recovery procedure for the installed MySQL version and operating system, then assign a new credential with
ALTER USER. - Review version-specific authentication support. Do not copy an old plugin or safe-mode command into a newer server without checking that version’s procedure.
Why localhost and 127.0.0.1 can behave differently
For a connection to localhost, MySQL programs normally try the local Unix socket unless connection parameters force TCP/IP. By contrast, -h 127.0.0.1 explicitly requests TCP/IP. These are different connection paths and can select different account rows or authentication behavior.
Compare the two transports
| Command | Typical transport | What a failure suggests |
|---|---|---|
mysql -u root -p |
Unix socket when the client defaults to localhost |
Check the root account row for Host='localhost', its password and its plugin. |
mysql -h 127.0.0.1 -u root -p |
TCP/IP | Check whether a matching row exists for the TCP connection’s host and whether the server permits that authentication path. |
A socket-authenticated root account does not automatically authenticate a TCP client. Conversely, a TCP test can fail even when the socket test succeeds. Test the transport your application or administration workflow is meant to use; do not “fix” a transport mismatch by granting a broad account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInterpret common transport results
- Socket works, TCP fails: the credentials may be correct, but the account or authentication method is limited to the local socket/host entry.
- TCP works, socket fails: the
localhostrow, socket location or socket-specific authentication setup may not match the client. - Both fail with
YES: verify the password and remove any stale option-file credential before changing grants. - Both fail with
NO: the client is not sending a password; use-por correct the calling script.
Check the User and Host grant rows
MySQL account matching is exact enough that 'root'@'localhost' and 'root'@'127.0.0.1' are separate identities. A row for one host does not prove that the other connection will authenticate. The same applies to a machine name, an address supplied by DNS and any other host value shown by the error.
After obtaining administrative access through a working account or transport, inspect the root rows:

mysql -u administrator -p -e 'SELECT User, Host, plugin FROM mysql.user WHERE User = ''root'';'
The exact quoting required by your shell can vary. The important result is the list of User, Host and plugin values. Compare it with the host in the 1045 message and with the transport used by your command.
You can also inspect privileges for a specific identity:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mysql -u administrator -p -e 'SHOW GRANTS FOR ''root''@''localhost'';'
Replace the host in the statement with the host value you are actually diagnosing. If no matching row exists, the server cannot authenticate that user-host combination. If a row exists, verify its credential and plugin rather than creating an unrestricted replacement.
Do not use Host='%' as a shortcut
A wildcard host permits connections from any host. The MySQL security guidance warns that such a grant leaves the account insecure. It also hides the original transport or host mismatch instead of correcting it. Prefer the narrow, specific host identity required by the installation and application.

When the root password is known
Use the password interactively first:
mysql -u root -p
If the command still fails, repeat it with option files disabled:
mysql --no-defaults -u root -p
A successful second command proves that a client configuration file was injecting a different credential or setting. Find the relevant option file for your platform, remove the obsolete password or update it, and then retest without --no-defaults. Do not put a live password directly on the command line unless you understand the exposure in process listings, history or logs.
When the root password is lost
Do not guess at old “skip grant tables” commands copied from an unrelated MySQL release. Password recovery is version- and platform-specific. Follow the official reset procedure for the exact server version installed on the machine.
The recovery flow has these stages:
- Identify the installed version and platform. The supported startup option, service command and authentication defaults depend on them.
- Stop the normal server service. Ensure that only the intended recovery instance will access the data directory.
- Start the documented temporary recovery mode or initialization-file method. Use the syntax prescribed for that version; do not improvise flags from an older tutorial.
- Connect locally with administrative access. The recovery procedure provides a controlled path to issue account changes.
- Assign the new credential with
ALTER USER. Target the exact identity, such as'root'@'localhost', that your normal connection will use. - Stop the temporary instance and restart normally. Leaving recovery mode active can bypass normal authentication and is unsafe.
- Test both the intended socket or TCP command and the application connection. Confirm that the host identity and plugin match the production path.
For a known local identity, the account change has the following form:

ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'S3cure-Example-Only-Change-Me!';
Use a long, unique secret of your own instead of the example value, and change the host portion if the account row you are repairing is different. The statement must be executed while you have the administrative access provided by the recovery procedure.

Authentication-plugin compatibility by MySQL version
Authentication plugins are not interchangeable across all releases. MySQL 8.4 disables mysql_native_password by default, and MySQL 9.0 removes it. A client or account configured around that legacy plugin can therefore fail after an upgrade even when the password has not changed.
| Server release | Plugin fact | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Before 8.4 | Legacy plugin behavior depends on the server and account configuration. | Inspect the account’s plugin value before changing it. |
| 8.4 | mysql_native_password is disabled by default. |
Use a current client and the server’s supported authentication method; enable legacy behavior only when the version-specific documentation and compatibility requirement justify it. |
| 9.0 and later | mysql_native_password is removed. |
Upgrade or reconfigure clients and accounts to a supported plugin rather than trying to restore the removed default. |
Changing a plugin can affect every client that uses the account. Treat it as a migration decision, not as a generic response to every 1045 error. First establish whether the failure is actually a wrong password, a host-row mismatch or an option-file credential.
Decision table: choose the least disruptive fix
| What you know | Most likely issue | Next action |
|---|---|---|
Error ends in using password: NO |
No password was sent. | Run mysql -u root -p. |
Error ends in using password: YES; you did not type a password |
An option file supplied one. | Run mysql --no-defaults -u root -p, then correct the option file. |
localhost works; 127.0.0.1 fails |
Socket and TCP use different account or authentication paths. | Inspect the matching User/Host rows and use the intended transport. |
127.0.0.1 works; localhost fails |
The local socket path or localhost row does not match. |
Check the socket connection settings and the 'root'@'localhost' identity. |
| Password is unavailable | The credential must be replaced. | Use the official, version-specific reset procedure, then run ALTER USER. |
| Failure follows an upgrade | Client or authentication-plugin incompatibility. | Check the server release and account plugin; move to a supported method. |
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Adding
-pand typing a password on the same command line: this can expose the secret in shell history or process information. Let the client prompt instead. - Assuming
localhostmeans TCP: it normally selects a Unix socket. Use-h 127.0.0.1when you intentionally need TCP/IP. - Granting
rootto%: a wildcard host broadens access to every host and does not diagnose the original mismatch. - Running a reset command from a different MySQL version: startup and recovery options change. Use the procedure for the installed release and operating system.
- Changing the plugin before checking the account row: plugin edits can break existing clients and will not correct a wrong host or stale password.
- Leaving temporary recovery mode running: restore normal server startup as soon as the account change is complete.
Verify the repair
- Run the exact command your administrator or application needs, including its intended host option.
- Confirm that the error no longer reports 1045 and that the account is the expected user-host identity.
- Test the alternate transport only if you need it; a successful socket login does not certify TCP access.
- Remove obsolete credentials from client option files and scripts.
- Record the MySQL version, account host row and authentication plugin so a future upgrade can be checked before it reaches production.
The durable fix is the narrow one: send the intended password, use the intended socket or TCP transport, authenticate against the matching User/Host row, and keep the account’s plugin compatible with the installed MySQL release.
