A LOMP stack combines Linux, OpenLiteSpeed, MariaDB and PHP. For a new Ubuntu or Debian server, the most transparent approach is to add the OpenLiteSpeed repository, install OpenLiteSpeed, install a matching LSPHP package with its MariaDB/MySQL extension, then install and harden MariaDB. Choose the one-click installer for a bundled WordPress deployment, or the ols install CLI when you need parameterized automation and a dry run.

This guide covers the prerequisites, all three installation routes, MariaDB hardening, OpenLiteSpeed virtual-host and PHP configuration, DNS and TLS checks, verification, troubleshooting and maintenance. Package names, supported operating systems and PHP options change, so confirm the current repository documentation for your distribution before executing commands.

What a LOMP stack does

Linux supplies the operating system and service manager. OpenLiteSpeed accepts HTTP and HTTPS requests, serves static files and forwards dynamic requests to LiteSpeed PHP (LSPHP). MariaDB stores application data, while PHP executes server-side code and connects to MariaDB through the matching database extension.

A request to a PHP application normally follows this path: the browser reaches an OpenLiteSpeed listener, the listener selects a virtual host and document root, the PHP external application runs the requested script through LSPHP, and that script reads or writes MariaDB. A missing link at any stage can produce a blank page, a 404, a 503 or a database-connection error, so install and verify each layer separately.

Check prerequisites before installing

  • Use a supported 64-bit Linux release. The repository documentation lists CentOS 8–10, Debian 11–13 and Ubuntu 22, 24 and 26, along with common Red Hat derivatives. Releases near end of life may lose package or PHP support first; re-check the list immediately before deployment.
  • Have administrative access. You need root access or a sudo-capable account for package installation, service changes and the MariaDB hardening script.
  • Start with a clean server when possible. The CLI installer is designed for a clean host. Existing web servers, database servers or control panels can already occupy files, services and ports.
  • Reserve the required ports. Keep ports 80 and 443 available for web traffic and port 7080 available for the OpenLiteSpeed WebAdmin console. Remove or reconfigure conflicting services before installation.
  • Control the domain’s DNS. You must be able to point the domain or subdomain at the server’s public address before requesting an automatically issued certificate.
  • Plan administration exposure. Decide how you will restrict port 7080 and database access with your firewall or provider security group. Do not expose management interfaces broadly just because the initial installer succeeds.

Choose an installation route

All three routes can produce the same LOMP components, but they suit different deployment goals.

Route Automation Package and PHP control WordPress behavior Repeatability and dry run Post-install work
Repository packages Individual package commands; you control each layer Explicitly select the LSPHP package and its versioned extensions Not bundled by the repository installation steps Repeatable package installation; no dry-run workflow is documented Configure the listener, virtual host, document root and PHP external application yourself
One-click script Highest automation; one script installs the server and PHP components, and optionally the database and WordPress stack Less granular during the initial run than installing packages individually ols1clk.sh -W includes OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP, MariaDB, WordPress and LiteSpeed Cache; without -W, the script installs the server and PHP components only Designed for a fast bundled deployment; a dry-run mode is not identified Review the generated configuration, credentials, DNS and TLS after the script finishes
ols install CLI Parameterized automation with PHP-version, database and listener options Choose options through CLI flags rather than manually installing every package Not stated in the CLI installation documentation Supports --dry-run, which lets you inspect the proposed operation before changing the host Still verify the resulting virtual host, DNS, certificate and application connection

For a production host where you want auditable package commands, use the repository route. For a new WordPress server where speed matters more than granular choices, use the one-click script with -W. For repeatable provisioning or parameterized automation, start with the CLI and run its dry run first.

Route A: install from the OpenLiteSpeed repository

1. Add the repository for your distribution

Use the distribution-specific repository bootstrap instructions for your supported CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu release. Repository setup is intentionally release-specific: package names, repository files and signing steps can change as operating-system families move through their support cycles. Do not copy a repository configuration intended for a different release.

After the repository is enabled, refresh the local package index with your distribution’s normal update command. On Debian or Ubuntu, that is typically:

sudo apt update

2. Install OpenLiteSpeed

Install the web server package from the enabled LiteSpeed repository:

sudo apt install openlitespeed

On a Red Hat-derived system, use the equivalent package manager command for the repository you enabled. Confirm that the package completed without dependency errors before moving on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Install a matching LSPHP build and MariaDB extension

Choose one LSPHP version supported by your operating system and application. The package names are versioned, so the PHP interpreter and every extension must use the same version prefix. The repository documentation gives this Debian/Ubuntu example for LSPHP 8.4:

sudo apt install lsphp84 lsphp84-common lsphp84-mysql

  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The lsphp84-mysql package supplies the MySQL/MariaDB connectivity used by PHP applications. If you select another supported PHP version, replace all three 84 suffixes consistently and confirm that the corresponding packages exist in the repository. Do not install an lsphp core package from one version with a database extension from another.

4. Check the web-server service

Check the OpenLiteSpeed systemd unit after package installation. On standard packages the unit is commonly named lsws:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

sudo systemctl status lsws

If your distribution exposes a different unit name, list the installed systemd units and use the name supplied by the package. A running service only proves that the daemon started; it does not yet prove that a listener, virtual host or PHP handler is correctly mapped.

Install and secure MariaDB

1. Install the server and client packages

On Debian or Ubuntu, install both the server and client tools:

sudo apt install mariadb-server mariadb-client

Use the distribution’s equivalent package path on supported Red Hat-derived systems. Installing the client as well as the server gives you the command-line tools needed to inspect the instance and test an application account.

2. Run the hardening wizard

Start the interactive security script:

sudo mariadb-secure-installation

The script can set root credentials, remove root accounts that are externally accessible, remove anonymous users and remove the default test database. Accept the changes that match a server intended for an application rather than a disposable local experiment. Removing anonymous accounts prevents unauthenticated logins; removing externally reachable root accounts narrows the most privileged login path; removing the test database eliminates an unnecessary default object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Verify the service

Check that systemd reports a healthy MariaDB service:

sudo systemctl status mariadb

If it is not active, inspect the service log before attempting application configuration. A PHP connection cannot work while the database service is stopped, regardless of the credentials in your application.

4. Create a least-privilege application account

Do not use the MariaDB root account in a PHP application. Enter the MariaDB client as an administrator and create a database plus a user restricted to the local host. The names and password below are examples; choose your own database name and a long, unique password.

sudo mariadb

CREATE DATABASE gameapp CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'gameapp_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'use-a-long-unique-password';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON gameapp.* TO 'gameapp_user'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

Grant only the permissions the application requires. A read-only service, for example, should not receive all privileges. Keep the database bound to local application access unless a documented external connection is genuinely required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the OpenLiteSpeed administrator password

OpenLiteSpeed’s WebAdmin console listens on port 7080. Set or change its administrator password with the bundled helper:

sudo /usr/local/lsws/admin/misc/admpass.sh

Choose a unique password and store it in your password manager. Then open the console at https://server-address:7080. Browsers may warn about the console’s initial certificate; verify that you are connecting to your own server and restrict port 7080 at the firewall or provider level.

Configure the listener, virtual host and PHP handler

The package installation does not by itself create the site-specific mapping you need. In WebAdmin, configure these objects in order; exact labels can vary slightly between OpenLiteSpeed releases.

1. Create or select a document root

Choose a directory owned by the site account and place a simple index file there. Keep application files outside directories used for logs, backups or MariaDB data. The virtual host’s document-root setting must point to the directory that contains the public entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Create the virtual host

In the virtual-host configuration, set the host name, document root and log locations. Add the domain names that should answer for the site, and make sure the virtual host is enabled. A listener can receive traffic successfully while still returning the wrong site if the host-to-virtual-host mapping is missing.

3. Map an HTTP listener

Use the listener configuration to bind the virtual host to port 80. Check that the listener’s address and port do not conflict with another service. Save the configuration and perform the required graceful restart from WebAdmin or systemd.

4. Add the LSPHP external application

Create a PHP external application that points to the LSPHP binary installed for your chosen version. Associate the PHP script handler with that external application, then map the handler to the virtual host. The binary and the lsphpXX-mysql extension must come from the same version family; otherwise PHP files may execute while database calls fail to load their driver.

5. Add HTTPS after DNS is ready

Create or select a listener on port 443 and attach the certificate and key for the domain. If you use the installer’s automatic certificate option, point DNS to the server first. Certificate authorities must be able to resolve and reach the domain during validation.

Route B: use the one-click installer

The one-click documentation provides a bundled path for a clean server. Run the script as root or through sudo:

sudo bash ols1clk.sh -W

The -W option installs OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP, MariaDB, WordPress and LiteSpeed Cache. Use the script without that option when you want the server and PHP components but do not want the bundled WordPress deployment:

sudo bash ols1clk.sh

Read the script’s prompts and output rather than assuming that a successful shell exit means the application is ready. After completion, check the MariaDB service, sign in to WebAdmin, inspect the virtual-host mapping, confirm the document root and verify which PHP version was installed. The script saves time on a clean host, but you still own DNS, firewall rules, administrator credentials, certificate issuance and ongoing updates.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Route C: automate with the ols CLI

The ols install command is useful when provisioning several servers or when a manual sequence needs to become repeatable. It supports PHP-version flags, database selection and listener options. Start by reading the options available on the installed CLI:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ols install --help

On a clean server, preview the operation before making changes:

sudo ols install --dry-run

Review the dry-run output for the selected PHP version, database choice, listener ports and any assumptions about existing services. Then run the same installation with the required flags. Because the exact option names and supported values can change, copy them from the CLI’s current help output rather than reusing a command written for another release.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

The CLI does not remove the need for post-install verification. Confirm that ports 80, 443 and 7080 are available, that MariaDB is running, that the chosen LSPHP binary has its database extension and that the intended virtual host answers for the domain.

Point DNS at the server before requesting TLS

Create the required A or AAAA records with your DNS provider and wait for the records to resolve to the server. Only then use an automatic-certificate option. If the domain still points elsewhere, certificate validation can fail even though OpenLiteSpeed is configured correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test both the bare domain and any subdomain you configured. During DNS propagation, test directly against the server address only when your method preserves the intended host header; otherwise you may receive the default virtual host and mistake it for an application failure.

Verify every layer

  1. HTTP reachability: request the domain on port 80 and confirm that OpenLiteSpeed returns the intended virtual host rather than a default page.
  2. HTTPS reachability: request the domain on port 443 and verify that the certificate name matches the domain and that the listener serves the same virtual host.
  3. PHP execution: place a temporary PHP file in the document root containing <?php echo 'LOMP OK'; ?>, load it through the domain, and remove it immediately after the check. A download prompt or source-code response means the PHP handler is not mapped.
  4. Database connectivity: use the application account, database name and local host setting to run a simple read/write operation from a PHP test page or the real application. This is a verification procedure, not a result guaranteed by the installer.
  5. Service persistence: reboot only after the stack works, then check that OpenLiteSpeed and MariaDB return automatically and that the listeners are still bound to the intended ports.

No universal application test result is established by the installation commands alone. Treat these checks as acceptance tests for your particular domain, PHP code and MariaDB schema.

Troubleshoot common failures

Port 80, 443 or 7080 is already in use

Stop or reconfigure the conflicting web server, reverse proxy or management service before rerunning an installer. The CLI documentation specifically expects these ports to be available. If another service must keep a port, choose a deliberate architecture and map listeners accordingly rather than allowing two daemons to compete for the same address.

PHP returns 503 or downloads the script

Check that the LSPHP external application exists, that the script handler points to it and that the virtual host is mapped to the listener receiving the request. Confirm that the binary’s version matches the installed lsphpXX-mysql package. A source download usually indicates no PHP handler; a 503 commonly indicates an unavailable or misconfigured external application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PHP runs but cannot connect to MariaDB

Verify that MariaDB is active with systemctl status mariadb, that the PHP database extension came from the matching LSPHP package and that the application uses the exact database name, user, password and host. A user created for localhost is not automatically the same account as a user created for another host value. Do not switch to the MariaDB root account as a diagnostic shortcut in production.

The automatic certificate request fails

Check DNS first, then confirm that port 80 or the validation path reaches this server and that the requested host name is present in the virtual-host configuration. Point the domain at the server before invoking autocert and retry only after propagation is visible from your normal DNS checks.

The wrong site appears

Inspect the listener-to-virtual-host mapping and the host names assigned to the virtual host. Also confirm the document root. An OpenLiteSpeed service can be healthy while a request is routed to a default host because the domain was never attached to the intended virtual host.

The repository install reports missing packages

Confirm that the operating-system release is in the currently supported list and that the correct LiteSpeed repository was enabled for that release. Refresh package metadata and check that every LSPHP package uses one consistent version suffix. Do not force packages from an older distribution family onto a newer host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operate the stack safely after installation

  • Update regularly: keep the operating system, OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP and MariaDB packages current through their supported repositories. Recheck PHP availability when a distribution approaches end of life.
  • Limit administration: restrict port 7080 to trusted addresses, use a strong WebAdmin password and avoid exposing MariaDB to the public internet unless an external connection is required and separately secured.
  • Back up MariaDB: maintain scheduled, tested backups outside the server. A backup that has never been restored is not a recovery plan.
  • Monitor services: alert on failed OpenLiteSpeed or MariaDB units, exhausted disk space, certificate expiry and repeated PHP errors.
  • Document changes: record the selected LSPHP version, repository release, listener ports, virtual-host roots, database accounts and certificate renewal method. This makes a rebuild repeatable and reduces emergency guesswork.
  • Remove temporary diagnostics: delete PHP information pages, test scripts and one-time credentials immediately after verification.

Which route should you use?

Use repository packages when you want every installation decision visible and reproducible, especially on a long-lived application server. Use ols1clk.sh -W when a clean host needs OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP, MariaDB and WordPress in one pass. Use ols install when provisioning must be parameterized or reviewed with --dry-run. Whichever route you choose, the finished LOMP stack is not complete until MariaDB is hardened, the PHP handler is mapped, DNS resolves to the server, HTTPS works and a real application can read and write its database.
