After an unexpected MySQL shutdown, try one normal restart first and let InnoDB complete its own crash recovery. InnoDB reads the redo logs, rolls committed work forward, and rolls back transactions that were uncommitted when the server stopped. Do not delete ibdata1, *.ibd, or redo-log files to “unstick” startup.

If the restart fails, stop repeated attempts long enough to preserve the complete error log and the data directory. The log distinguishes ordinary recovery from missing tablespaces, redo-log mismatches, corruption, and storage failures. Use a known-good backup and binary logs for a dependable rebuild; use innodb_force_recovery only as an emergency way to start a copy far enough to extract data.

What normally happens after a MySQL crash

InnoDB is designed to recover from an unexpected process exit or power loss. On the next startup it checks its logs, performs a roll-forward to bring committed changes to the present state, and rolls back transactions that were still uncommitted at the moment of the crash. The normal recovery action is therefore a restart, not a manual repair of individual files.

“To recover from an unexpected MySQL server exit, the only requirement is to restart the MySQL server.”

— MySQL 8.0 InnoDB Recovery manual

Recovery time is workload-dependent. A rollback of a large transaction can take substantially longer than the transaction took to run, so a server that appears quiet may still be making progress. Interrupting that process with repeated kills can leave you with less useful diagnostic evidence and another incomplete recovery attempt.

The boundary is important: automatic recovery can resolve an unclean shutdown, but it cannot reliably reconstruct data after a damaged tablespace, failed storage device, or missing redo files. Those conditions require preservation of the original files and, preferably, restoration from an uncorrupted backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First response: stop the restart loop and preserve evidence

  1. Stop automatic restart attempts temporarily. Disable or pause a service supervisor that is repeatedly launching mysqld. Do not keep deleting temporary files or killing the process between attempts.
  2. Confirm the storage is available. Check that the volume containing the configured data directory is mounted, writable, and not full. A full filesystem can prevent both recovery and error-log writes.
  3. Confirm you are inspecting the right data directory. Read the active MySQL configuration and identify its datadir and log_error settings. A common mistake is examining an old installation while the service uses a different instance.
  4. Check permissions and ownership. The operating-system account running MySQL must be able to read the data directory and write the locations configured for temporary files, logs, and runtime files.
  5. Make a byte-for-byte copy or storage snapshot before experimentation if the log mentions corruption, missing tablespaces, redo-log problems, or I/O errors. Preserve the original copy read-only; perform salvage attempts on a duplicate.

These steps do not repair anything. They prevent a second failure from destroying the evidence needed to choose between waiting, restoring, or extracting data.

Capture the complete startup error log

The error log is the decision point. Capture the entire log from one controlled startup attempt, including the first warning or error and every message that follows it. Do not rely on the final line alone: an “aborting” message is often preceded by the actual cause.

Linux and other systemd installations

Use the service name configured by your distribution; it is commonly mysql or mysqld.

sudo systemctl status mysql --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u mysql -b -n 300 --no-pager
sudo systemctl start mysql

If your service is named mysqld, substitute that name in each command. Also inspect the file named by log_error, because a service journal may contain only part of the diagnostic output.

Windows

Stop the MySQL service before launching a foreground diagnostic instance. From the server’s binary directory, run:

mysqld --console

The --console option displays startup diagnostics directly. Save the complete console output. Do not start this second instance against the same data directory while the Windows service is still running.

What to record with the log

  • MySQL version and whether the instance is a standalone server or part of a managed service.
  • The configured data directory and error-log path.
  • The exact time of the crash and each restart attempt.
  • Whether the host lost power, rebooted, ran out of disk space, or reported storage errors.
  • Any recent changes to disks, permissions, configuration, encryption keys, or MySQL binaries.

Use the log to choose the next action

Log pattern or symptom Safest next action Avoid
InnoDB says it is scanning logs, rolling forward, or rolling back transactions Leave the server running and allow ordinary crash recovery to finish. Monitor the log for new progress or a definitive error. Repeatedly killing the process because startup is taking longer than expected.
Missing tablespace, missing *.ibd, or a tablespace identifier mismatch Stop and preserve the data directory. Prefer a clean restore from a known-good physical backup, followed by binary-log replay. Creating empty files, renaming tablespace files, or deleting ibdata1 and redo logs.
Redo-log incompatibility, invalid checkpoint, or redo files that cannot be read Preserve the original files and assess a backup restore. Use a duplicate for any emergency extraction. Removing redo logs to force a start; they may contain the changes needed to recover committed data.
Page corruption, checksum errors, or repeated InnoDB assertion failures Take a byte-for-byte copy or snapshot, then restore a clean backup or attempt limited logical extraction from a copy. In-place “repair” commands that overwrite the only copy of the data.
Operating-system I/O errors, an unavailable volume, or a full filesystem Resolve the storage condition without modifying database files, then make a protected copy and retry once. Assuming every startup failure is a MySQL configuration problem.

Step-by-step: try one normal restart

  1. Verify that no other mysqld process is using the data directory.
  2. Check free space on the data, temporary, and log volumes. Leave enough room for recovery to write its logs and temporary files.
  3. Start the service with its normal configuration:
    sudo systemctl start mysql

On systems using a different service name, use the configured name.

  4. Follow the error log while the process starts. If it reports normal InnoDB recovery, wait for completion rather than interrupting it.
  5. When the service becomes available, connect locally and verify that expected databases and critical tables can be read. Check the application only after the server itself is stable.

If the same fatal message returns, stop the service and preserve the log and data directory. Do not convert a recoverable diagnosis into a destructive file operation.

When a clean backup is the right repair

For corruption, missing tablespaces, redo-log damage, or disk failure, restoring an uncorrupted backup is more predictable than trying to repair the damaged directory in place. A physical restore replaces the failed instance with a known-good base; binary logs then bring it forward to a selected point in time.

Restore-and-replay procedure

  1. Provision a clean instance. Use a supported MySQL version and compatible configuration. Keep it separate from the damaged data directory.
  2. Restore the base backup. Use the organization’s documented physical-backup procedure. Do not copy individual files from the damaged directory into the clean instance unless the backup procedure explicitly requires it.
  3. Identify the recovery point. Choose the latest safe time before the failure or another point that meets the business requirement. Confirm that binary logs cover the interval after the base backup.
  4. Replay binary logs. The standard tools are mysqlbinlog to read and filter the logs and the mysql client to apply them. A basic stream looks like:
mysqlbinlog binlog.000001 binlog.000002 | mysql -u root -p

Use the actual binlog files, server credentials, and start or stop positions recorded by your backup process. If you need point-in-time recovery, filter the stream to the selected timestamp or position rather than applying events beyond it.

  1. Validate before cutover. Check that required databases and tables exist, run application-level integrity checks, compare important row counts or business totals with trusted records, and review the error log for new warnings.
  2. Redirect applications only after validation. Keep the original failed directory untouched until the restored instance has passed the agreed checks and the retention policy permits disposal.

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. If binary-log retention has gaps, point-in-time recovery can stop at the last available event; document that boundary instead of claiming a complete reconstruction.

Using innodb_force_recovery for emergency extraction

innodb_force_recovery is a salvage control, not a general repair command. Use it when ordinary startup cannot complete and no clean restore is immediately available, with the narrow goal of starting a copy long enough to dump recoverable data.

Prepare a disposable copy

  1. Stop MySQL and make a byte-for-byte copy or storage snapshot of the failed data directory.
  2. Work only on the copy. Keep the original untouched for later forensic work or a backup specialist.
  3. Add innodb_force_recovery under the [mysqld] section of the copy’s configuration, using the lowest level that your MySQL version supports.
  4. Start the copied instance and inspect the error log. If it still cannot start, stop it, increase the value by one step, and try again. Increase only as needed; higher levels bypass more normal recovery behavior and can make the running copy unsuitable for writes.

Dump what can be read

Once the copy starts, treat it as read-only for practical purposes. Export immediately with a logical-backup tool:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mysqldump --all-databases --routines --events --triggers --hex-blob > recovery.sql

If an all-database dump stops on one damaged object, dump databases or tables separately and record which objects fail. A successful command does not prove that every row is intact: corruption can affect only particular pages, indexes, or tables.

Rebuild instead of continuing on the forced instance

  1. Provision a clean MySQL instance.
  2. Import the logical dump into the clean instance.
  3. Recreate users, permissions, scheduled events, and application configuration that were not included or were intentionally excluded from the dump.
  4. Validate the rebuilt data against business records and any available backups or binary logs.
  5. Retire the forced-recovery copy after preserving it according to your incident-retention policy.

Data extracted under forced recovery may be incomplete or internally inconsistent. Treat it as a source for reconstruction, not as proof that the damaged server has been repaired.

Why deleting InnoDB files usually makes recovery worse

InnoDB startup depends on discovering tablespaces and applying redo records in the correct order. The system tablespace, individual tablespaces, and redo logs contain related metadata and recovery information. Deleting one because a forum recipe says it is “safe” can remove evidence of committed changes, create new mismatches, or make a later backup restore harder to interpret.

  • ibdata1: may contain the InnoDB system tablespace and metadata; deleting it is not a reset that preserves existing tables.
  • *.ibd files: belong to specific tablespaces. An empty replacement file is not the original tablespace and cannot substitute for it.
  • Redo logs: can contain changes needed to roll the database forward after the crash. Removing them discards recovery information.

Only remove or recreate these files as part of a documented rebuild in which the old instance has already been preserved and the data is being restored from a known-good source.

Choose between logical extraction and physical restoration

Approach Best use Strength Risk or limitation
Normal restart Unexpected shutdown with no evidence of storage or file corruption Preserves InnoDB’s normal recovery semantics and requires no data transformation Cannot fix missing files, damaged media, or unrecoverable corruption
Physical backup restore plus binary logs A known-good base backup exists and recovery confidence matters Predictable full-instance rebuild and point-in-time recovery Requires a usable backup, complete binary-log coverage, and validation time
Logical dump from a forced-recovery copy No immediate clean restore is available, but some pages remain readable Extracts surviving objects into a fresh instance Extraction can be incomplete; damaged objects may fail and consistency must be checked
In-place file deletion or ad-hoc repair Not a safe recovery strategy None when the original data is still needed Can destroy redo information, metadata, and the only recoverable copy

The trade-off is explicit: a forced start may reduce immediate downtime, but a clean restore generally provides greater confidence in data completeness. Choose availability first only when you can accept the validation and reconstruction work that follows.

Common startup failures that are not database corruption

The disk is full

Free space on the data volume, the filesystem containing the error log, and the temporary directory. After clearing space safely, make one controlled restart and capture its log. Do not delete InnoDB files to reclaim space.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

The data volume is not mounted

Confirm the expected device, mount point, and filesystem health before starting MySQL. Starting against an empty directory can create a new, blank data directory and confuse later recovery efforts.

Permissions changed

Compare ownership and access permissions with a working installation and with the account configured for the service. Correct the operating-system permissions without changing database-file contents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second server is already running

Check the process list and listening port before launching mysqld --console or a manual start. Two servers must never use the same data directory.

The service starts and then stops

Capture the complete log from that attempt. The initial startup messages may show a configuration error, unavailable plugin, or path problem that is hidden by the service manager’s generic failure status.

After MySQL is back online

  • Determine why the crash occurred: power loss, operating-system failure, storage errors, exhausted disk space, hardware faults, or an administrative shutdown.
  • Review operating-system and storage diagnostics, not just the MySQL log. Repeated I/O errors can corrupt a restored instance again.
  • Verify that scheduled backups completed, that the backups are uncorrupted, and that binary logs are retained for the interval your recovery objectives require.
  • Perform a test restore to a separate environment and measure how long validation and cutover actually take.
  • Document the exact recovery point, commands used, data that could not be extracted, and checks that approved the restored instance.

A successful restart proves only that this startup completed. A rehearsed restore is what demonstrates that the service can be recovered when the data directory itself is no longer trustworthy.
