Start by checking how widely the problem occurs: try another title, then another supported device on the same network. If only one device fails, focus on its app, software, or compatibility; if several devices struggle, check the connection, Wi-Fi conditions, or home network. Buffering alone does not identify the cause.
1. Find out whether the problem is a title, device, service, or network
Before changing settings, narrow the scope. Try a different show or film on the same service, then test that service on another supported device connected to the same network. HBO Max recommends testing another device to help distinguish a device problem from a network problem. HBO Max’s buffering guidance and Netflix’s troubleshooting steps also treat connection and device issues as possible causes.

- Only one title fails: Try another title. One unsuccessful playback attempt does not, by itself, establish a service-wide outage.
- Only one service fails: Check that service’s current help page and the displayed error code; the problem may be specific to the app or title rather than the whole connection.
- Only one device fails: Prioritize that device’s app, operating-system updates, and compatibility.
- Several devices or services struggle: Investigate the shared network, Wi-Fi signal, congestion, or connection to the service.
2. Check the connection on the device that is buffering
Run a speed test on the affected streaming device if possible, or on another device using the same network. A speed test is a snapshot: it may not reveal brief drops, wireless interference, or congestion that occurs during playback.
For HBO Max, its official troubleshooting page says HD streaming requires a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 50+ Mbps for its best 4K streaming experience. These are HBO Max’s service recommendations, not guarantees that playback will be uninterrupted or universal thresholds for Netflix and Disney+. Disney+ identifies a slow or unstable connection as a possible cause but the cited guidance does not give a numeric minimum. See HBO Max’s buffering guidance. See Disney+’s streaming-issues guidance.

If you are using public Wi-Fi at a hotel, café, or school, Netflix advises checking whether video services are blocked on that network; do not try to bypass an organization’s restrictions. Mobile-hotspot, cellular, and satellite connections may also be too slow or unstable for playback, so use Netflix’s connection guidance for those situations.
3. Restart the app and device, then check updates
- Fully close the streaming app and open it again.
- Restart the TV, console, phone, tablet, or streaming device.
- Check for updates to both the streaming app and the device’s operating system.
- Confirm the device is supported by the service. Disney+ lists compatibility and outdated software among possible causes; its guidance is at Disney+ streaming issues.
If the problem is limited to one device, follow the official instructions for its specific platform rather than applying a generic reset. HBO Max recommends reinstalling its app when buffering is isolated to a phone or tablet, and provides platform-specific steps for some TVs. Reinstalling may require signing in again; check the platform instructions before clearing app data or resetting a device. HBO Max buffering and device steps

4. Restart the modem and router if multiple devices are affected
If the issue persists across devices, restart the network equipment according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Netflix’s cited procedure is to unplug the modem and, if separate, the router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for the connection to return. HBO Max also specifies a 30-second power interruption in its device troubleshooting steps. Netflix’s troubleshooting page and HBO Max’s buffering page

5. Improve Wi-Fi or make a wired test
- Move the streaming device closer to the router where practical.
- Place the router in an open, elevated location rather than on the floor, and away from appliances or other wireless devices that may interfere.
- If both the router and streaming device have Ethernet ports, connect them temporarily by cable to test whether Wi-Fi is the weak link. This is an optional diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix or a necessary purchase for every buffering problem.
These placement and connection suggestions are included in Netflix’s network troubleshooting guidance and HBO Max’s buffering steps.

If several devices still have connection problems after restarting the network, contact your internet provider. Netflix says an ISP can check for local outages, modem or router problems, and incorrect network settings.
