The “Access through untrusted domain” page means Nextcloud received a Host header that does not exactly match an entry in trusted_domains in config.php. Add the exact hostname users enter in their browsers, including a non-standard port when one is used. For an existing Docker deployment, change the live configuration with occ; changing NEXTCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINS in Compose is generally an initial-setup step.

What the error means
Nextcloud compares the host in each request with its trusted_domains array. If a request arrives for cloud.example.com but that name is absent, Nextcloud blocks the request and displays “Access through untrusted domain.” The comparison is exact: a domain, an IP address, a different subdomain, and a host that includes a non-standard port are distinct entries.

Start with the URL that the affected user actually enters. If the browser opens https://cloud.example.com, that hostname must be present. If users open https://203.0.113.50, the IP address must also be present. If the public URL uses a non-standard port, include that port in the trusted-domain entry. Do not add a name merely because it appears in your Docker network or proxy configuration; add the name the browser sends in the request.

For an instance that already contains users or files, use occ. Treat edits to Compose as configuration for a new volume unless you have verified that your image and deployment process reapplies the variable to an existing configuration.

Fix a new deployment with NEXTCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINS
The variable is a space-separated list, not a comma-separated list. A Compose service can be written as:

- Stop the new stack before its first initialization if it is currently running.
- Put the space-separated host list under the Nextcloud service’s
environmentsection. - Start the stack and complete initialization.
- Open Nextcloud through every public URL you intend to support and confirm that each one is accepted.
The variable is reported in community deployments as being applied when the Nextcloud volume is first created. On an existing volume, changing the YAML and recreating the container may leave the original trusted_domains array untouched. That behavior is why the live occ method is safer for an established installation.
Fix an existing container with occ
First inspect the current list. Run the command as the web-server user inside the running container:

docker exec --user www-data <container> php occ config:system:get trusted_domainsReplace <container> with the name or ID of your running Nextcloud container. The output shows the indexes already in use. Checking first matters because setting a value at an occupied index replaces that value.
Add a hostname at a free index
For example, to write cloud.example.com at index 1:

docker exec --user www-data <container> php occ config:system:set trusted_domains 2 --value=203.0.113.50Repeat one command per additional hostname. Keep the entries that are already valid; adding a new value does not require removing them.
Verify the resulting array
- Run
docker exec --user www-data <container> php occ config:system:get trusted_domainsagain. - Confirm that every browser-facing hostname appears at its own index.
- Retry the URL that produced the warning.
- Test each alternate public URL separately, because a successful DNS name does not prove that an IP address or second domain is listed.
Do not solve a proxy problem by adding the proxy as a trusted domain
A reverse proxy introduces a separate trust decision. Nextcloud’s trusted_proxies setting identifies proxy addresses that are allowed to forward requests. The proxy’s own address is not automatically a trusted domain. Add it to trusted_domains only if a browser genuinely reaches Nextcloud by using that address as its hostname.
When overwrite settings are needed
Nextcloud can derive the host, protocol and path from forwarded headers. If that detection is wrong, the reverse-proxy configuration documents these settings:
overwritehostforces the public host name.overwriteprotocolforces the public scheme, such as HTTPS.overwritewebrootforces the public path when Nextcloud is mounted below a URL prefix.overwrite.cli.urlsets the canonical URL used by command-line operations.
Use these settings for incorrect redirects, generated links or protocol warnings. They do not replace adding the browser-facing host to trusted_domains. A proxy-header warning has also been tracked in the Docker project (issue #1384), which illustrates why proxy trust and domain trust should be diagnosed separately.

Why changing Compose may appear to do nothing
Several Docker community reports describe NEXTCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINS changes that did not update an existing installation. The reported workaround was deleting the Nextcloud volume so initialization would run again, but that removes the instance’s stored data. It is a destructive reset, not a normal configuration procedure.
- Do not remove a production volume merely to force an environment variable to be reread.
- Back up the database and files before any volume operation.
- For an existing volume, inspect and edit the live array with
occ. - If you intentionally rebuild, verify the backup by restoring it before treating the old volume as disposable.
Docker issue #582 is titled “Trusted domain not working with docker compose,” and issue #1011 is titled “trusted_domains NOT working (UI unreachable).” Their existence is a reminder to distinguish an initialization-time variable from a live configuration edit and to keep a recovery plan.

1. Copy the browser’s actual host
Read the address bar, including the subdomain and any non-standard port. Do not rely on the container name, an internal service name or the proxy’s private address.
2. Compare it with the live list
Run config:system:get trusted_domains inside the running container. Look for spelling, subdomain and port differences. A value for example.com does not automatically cover cloud.example.com, and an entry without a non-standard port does not establish that port-specific URL.

3. Add rather than overwrite
Select an unused numeric index and run config:system:set. Writing to an index already in use replaces that entry, so inspect first.
4. Check proxy settings independently
If the host is correct but redirects, HTTPS detection or a subdirectory path is wrong, review trusted_proxies and the relevant overwrite setting. Do not broaden trusted_domains with internal proxy addresses as a substitute.
5. Test every entry
Open each supported public URL in a browser. This catches a missing alternate domain even when the primary address works.
6. Treat multi-domain reports cautiously
Forum users have reported cases in which only the first value in a multi-domain NEXTCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINS list was applied. That report is not verified here against the current image. If several domains matter, verify the resulting array with occ and add missing entries individually rather than assuming the Compose list was consumed correctly.
Common mistakes and their corrections
- Using commas in the environment variable: use spaces between values.
- Adding the Docker service name: add the hostname visible to the browser instead.
- Changing YAML on a mature installation: edit the live configuration with
occ. - Overwriting index 1: inspect the array and choose an unused index.
- Adding only the proxy address: configure
trusted_proxies; add a proxy address as a domain only when users browse to it. - Deleting the volume as a first resort: preserve backups and use
occunless you are deliberately rebuilding and have a tested restore.
Operational guidance for a durable setup
Document the public URLs your deployment supports and keep the Compose file, proxy configuration and Nextcloud configuration aligned. When a new domain is introduced, add it deliberately, verify the live array, and test the URL before directing users to it. Keep internal routing details separate from browser-facing names: trusted_domains answers “which host may users request?”, while trusted_proxies answers “which intermediary may forward that request?”
This separation also makes future migrations safer. You can change a proxy or container address without changing the public domain, and you can add a second public domain without trusting every internal network address.
