How to Fix Nintendo Switch 2 eShop Download and Payment Problems

Check the HOME Menu, purchasing account, Virtual Game Card, and exact error code to find the right fix for Switch 2 eShop download, payment, or redemption trouble.

If a Nintendo Switch 2 eShop purchase, download, or code redemption seems stuck, start on the HOME Menu and check which Nintendo Account made the purchase or redeemed the code. A completed purchase should begin downloading, but a missing icon can also mean the relevant Virtual Game Card needs to be set. For an error message, use its exact code: an already-redeemed code, an unsupported entry, and an item that is not released yet require different checks.

Work through the checks in order: confirm whether the transaction completed, identify the account that owns it, then follow the branch for a code, add-on, payment, or redownload problem. This helps avoid duplicate purchases and prevents a payment issue from being confused with an account or download issue.

Start with the HOME Menu and the purchasing account

Before trying to buy an item again or entering a code a second time, look for the software icon and download progress on the HOME Menu. Nintendo directs users there to check a download after completing a purchase. If the icon or progress indicator is present, the download has started; purchasing again will not resolve a download that is already underway. Nintendo’s Japan purchase guide describes this check.

Next, identify the user selected when the purchase was made or the code was redeemed. Nintendo Account entitlements are tied to that account: software, passes, and eShop funds cannot be transferred to a different account. On a console with multiple users, check the account that actually completed the transaction rather than assuming the currently selected user owns it. Nintendo explains account ownership in its download-code guidance and purchase instructions.

#1 Best Overall

This account check matters even when the console itself is the same. A purchase or code redemption made by one user does not become an entitlement for another user simply because both users share the Switch 2. If you are unsure which user was selected, check each plausible user’s HOME Menu and Virtual Game Card area before deciding the purchase is missing. Keep the distinction clear: the console may show a download in progress, but the Nintendo Account that made the transaction is the one associated with the purchase or redeemed content.

Use the symptom to choose the right check

What you see First check Next step
Purchase completed, but no download is visible HOME Menu icon or progress; account that purchased the item Check the relevant Virtual Game Card and set it if needed.

Previously downloaded software is missing Account that originally purchased it Check that account’s Virtual Game Card and whether redownload is still available.

The sections below explain each branch and the limits of what the available Nintendo guidance establishes. If more than one symptom applies, resolve the transaction and account questions first. For example, an error saying a code was already redeemed points toward locating the existing entitlement, not toward a payment-method change.

Purchase completed, but the download is not starting

  1. Check the HOME Menu. Look for the software icon and any progress indicator. A completed purchase should start its download, and Nintendo points users to the HOME Menu to monitor it. The Japan purchase guide documents this behavior. If the icon is there, give the download time to proceed rather than starting another purchase.
  2. Confirm the purchasing user. Check the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. If several users share the console, the entitlement may belong to a different one than the user currently selected. Check the user associated with the transaction, not just the profile you happen to be using now.
  3. Check the relevant Virtual Game Card. Nintendo says a download can be initiated by setting the Virtual Game Card when a software icon does not appear. This is also a relevant check for an already-redeemed download code or a previously purchased game that has been deleted. See the download-code instructions or the redownload guidance, as applicable.

These checks answer two different questions: whether the software is already downloading, and whether the account that owns it has the relevant Virtual Game Card set. If a purchase completed but no icon is visible, verify both before concluding that the transaction failed. If the code was redeemed on another user, inspect that user’s Virtual Game Card as well; repeatedly entering the same code will not move the entitlement to a different account.

If the download has started but is moving slowly, the official guidance is limited: a connection to the internet is required, and download time can vary with the internet connection and the amount of data. Nintendo does not provide a universal minimum speed or a single router setting that fixes slow downloads in the cited guidance. Check that the console has an internet connection, but do not treat a particular speed threshold, DNS change, or new networking accessory as an established solution. Nintendo’s connection and download-time guidance describes the connection and file-size factors.

It is also useful to distinguish a slow download from a download that never appeared. For the first, Nintendo’s stated factors are the internet connection and the amount of data. For the second, return to the HOME Menu, account, and Virtual Game Card checks. A purchase or code entitlement problem is not established as a network-speed problem, so avoid spending money on a router, storage card, or replacement console as a generic first fix.

Fix a download-code error by its exact number

Read the displayed number rather than treating every rejected code as invalid. Nintendo’s code troubleshooting maps different errors to different causes. The mappings below come from its download-code support page.

  • 2813-0040 or 9001-0040: The code has already been redeemed. Check the HOME Menu for the software or download, then check the other users who might have redeemed it and the relevant Virtual Game Card. Re-entering a code that has already been used is not the right next step. If another user redeemed it, the code’s content remains associated with that account rather than transferring to the user currently selected.
  • 2813-6561 or 9001-6561: The code entry is incorrect or the code is unsupported. Recheck the characters and confirm that the code is intended for a supported redemption type. A code for another kind of content may not be usable through the same redemption flow. Check the printed or displayed characters carefully before making another attempt.
  • 2813-0055 or 9001-0055: The content may not have been released yet. Confirm its release timing before treating the code as defective. An unreleased item is a different situation from an incorrect code entry, so first check when that content is available.

Region can matter too. Nintendo’s Japan support guidance says a Japan-market code cannot be redeemed when the Nintendo Account’s country or region is not Japan. That is a Japan-specific restriction; do not assume that every code in every region follows the same rule. Check the code’s market and the account’s country or region when the code is valid-looking but cannot be redeemed.

The practical order is to record the exact error, determine whether the message points to prior redemption, entry/support, or release timing, and then apply the matching check. For a Japan-market code, add the account’s country or region to that check. Do not change accounts or buy another code as a diagnostic shortcut: the code’s market and the Nintendo Account used for redemption are relevant to whether it can be used.

Resolve missing add-on content or an in-game reward

Add-on does not appear in the game

If the game was left suspended while the add-on was purchased or downloaded, close the software fully and launch it again. Nintendo’s Switch 2 purchase guidance for Japan says suspended software does not install the add-on; restarting the game is the relevant step. A suspended title is different from a fully closed one, so simply returning to the HOME Menu may not be enough.

After closing and reopening the game, check whether the add-on is available in the title. This is the supported first step for the suspended-game case; purchasing the add-on a second time is not a substitute for restarting the software. If the content was bought under another Nintendo Account, return to the ownership check as well, since entitlements belong to the purchasing account.

Redeemed item is not a separate HOME Menu icon

Some code rewards are used inside the game rather than installed as separate software. If you redeemed an in-game item, open the relevant game and check how that title lets players claim or receive the reward. Nintendo notes that such rewards may need to be claimed in-game and may not appear as a separate icon. Avoid looking for a standalone download when the code supplied an in-game item. The code guidance and purchase guidance cover these distinctions.

In short, a missing HOME Menu icon does not by itself prove that an in-game reward failed. First identify what kind of content the code promised. Downloadable software should be checked on the HOME Menu and through the relevant Virtual Game Card; an in-game reward may instead require an action within the game.

Check payment failures without assuming one global payment list

  1. Verify the selected user and account. Make sure you are purchasing with the Nintendo Account you intend to use. If multiple users are on the console, the selected account determines which account is involved in the transaction.
  2. Check the item and amount. Confirm that the selected item and displayed price are the ones you meant to purchase. This helps separate an unintended selection or amount from a failure to process payment.
  3. Check the account balance. If the balance is insufficient, look up the top-up and payment options available for the account’s country or region. Do not assume the payment methods shown for one market apply to another.
  4. Use region-specific instructions. Payment methods are not established as universal across all Nintendo eShop regions. Nintendo Japan lists credit card, prepaid card, and PayPal for adding funds in its purchase guidance; those options should not be presented as guaranteed to be available elsewhere.

There is a further age condition in that Japan-specific guidance: PayPal is unavailable to Nintendo Accounts for users aged 17 or younger. This qualification applies to the Japan instructions, not necessarily to payment rules in other regions. For a card or other payment problem outside Japan, consult Nintendo’s support information for the account’s actual country or region instead of relying on Japan’s list.

A prepaid eShop card is a possible balance top-up only where the relevant card and account region are supported. Match the card to the Nintendo Account’s country or region and use it for the payment shortfall—not as a fix for a missing download, an account ownership mismatch, or a network issue. Nintendo lists prepaid cards among Japan’s funding options and supports eShop card codes as a type of redeemable code, but availability and compatibility depend on the market.

Keep the payment problem separate from a code or download problem. If the purchase did not complete, check the selected account, item, price, balance, and payment options for that account’s region. If a purchase did complete but its content is missing, use the HOME Menu, account ownership, and Virtual Game Card steps instead. Adding funds will not resolve an already-redeemed code or make an entitlement transfer between Nintendo Accounts.

Redownload software you already own

For deleted or missing software, begin with the Nintendo Account that originally purchased it. Nintendo Japan’s redownload instructions direct users to the purchasing account’s Virtual Game Card. Set the relevant card to start the redownload, rather than trying to purchase the game again under a different user. The steps and availability described are in Nintendo’s eShop purchase-history and redownload guidance.

Redownload is not guaranteed in every case. Nintendo says it is unavailable if the original Nintendo Account is no longer linked to the user, or if Nintendo has ended distribution for redownload. If the account cannot be found among the console users, check which account made the original purchase. If the account is linked but the item still cannot be redownloaded, distribution availability may be the limiting factor.

That limitation is different from a payment failure: a title you already purchased should be investigated as an existing entitlement, not bought again immediately. Confirm the original purchasing account, check its Virtual Game Card, and then consider whether redownload remains available. If either the original account is no longer linked or distribution has ended, the cited guidance says redownload is unavailable; those conditions cannot be fixed by entering the code or purchase again on another account.

When you need to verify the transaction

If the issue is whether a purchase went through, use the purchase history for the account that should own it. Nintendo Japan’s Switch 2 purchase-history page says web purchase records cover the previous two years. That time window describes the cited Japan page; it should not be assumed to be a universal history-retention rule for every region. Open Nintendo’s purchase-history instructions for the applicable steps and account.

Purchase history is most useful after you have identified the likely purchasing account. Looking at a different user’s record may not resolve whether the first transaction succeeded, because purchases and funds are account-specific. Compare the transaction record with the HOME Menu and Virtual Game Card status before deciding whether to retry a purchase or code.

Do not use a second purchase as a test when you are uncertain whether the first one completed. First reconcile the account, the HOME Menu status, the Virtual Game Card, and the purchase record. If the code or payment still fails after those checks, keep the exact error message and account region in hand when consulting the matching Nintendo support page; those details determine which guidance applies.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish

Nintendo’s documented checks focus on account ownership, code status and type, Virtual Game Cards, software state, regional payment rules, and the internet connection and data size involved in downloading. The cited instructions do not establish a universal download-speed threshold or a guaranteed router, storage-card, or console-hardware fix for these symptoms. Avoid buying replacement hardware or changing network settings on the assumption that it is a proven remedy for an eShop entitlement or redemption issue.

For the same reason, treat payment methods and code-region rules as market-specific rather than universal. Nintendo Japan’s payment examples and the Japan-market code restriction are useful only in their stated regional context. Check support information for the Nintendo Account’s actual country or region before choosing a payment route or concluding that a code is incompatible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first if a Switch 2 eShop download is not starting?

Check the HOME Menu for the software icon and progress indicator. Then confirm which Nintendo Account made the purchase and check that account’s relevant Virtual Game Card. A completed purchase should begin downloading, but a missing icon may require setting the Virtual Game Card.

  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

What do error codes 2813-0040 and 9001-0040 mean?

Nintendo maps these codes to a code that has already been redeemed. Check the HOME Menu, other console users who may have redeemed it, and the relevant Virtual Game Card rather than entering the same code again.

Why does my download code say invalid or unavailable?

Codes 2813-6561 and 9001-6561 can indicate an incorrect or unsupported entry. Codes 2813-0055 and 9001-0055 can mean the content has not been released yet. Check the exact number, the code entry and type, release timing, and—where applicable—the account’s region.

Why is my Switch 2 DLC missing after I bought it?

If the game was suspended during the purchase or download, fully close it and launch it again. Nintendo’s Japan Switch 2 purchase guidance says suspended software does not install the add-on. Also confirm that the purchase belongs to the Nintendo Account you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why isn’t my redeemed in-game reward showing on the HOME Menu?

Some redeemed rewards are claimed inside the game and do not appear as separate software icons. Open the relevant game and check its reward or claim process.

Which payment methods can I use on Nintendo Switch 2?

Payment options depend on the Nintendo Account’s country or region. Nintendo Japan lists credit card, prepaid card, and PayPal for adding funds, and says PayPal is unavailable to accounts for users aged 17 or younger. Those rules should not be assumed to apply in other regions.

Can I redownload a game purchased by another user?

The entitlement is associated with the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. Check that purchasing account’s Virtual Game Card. Nintendo Japan says redownload is unavailable if the original account is no longer linked to the user or Nintendo has ended distribution for redownload.

How long does it take for a Switch 2 eShop download to finish?

Nintendo says download time can vary depending on the internet connection and the amount of data. Its cited guidance does not give a universal speed threshold or a guaranteed router setting that will fix a slow download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most Switch 2 eShop problems, start with the HOME Menu, the Nintendo Account that made the purchase or redeemed the code, and the relevant Virtual Game Card. Use the exact error code to choose the right code check, fully close and relaunch a suspended game for missing add-ons, and follow payment instructions for the account’s region. Avoid duplicate purchases or buying hardware until these account, entitlement, and download-status checks are complete.
