Identify the game, platform, carrier, condition, and purpose before you try to play or copy anything. A cartridge, floppy disk, and optical disc need different handling and capture equipment; there is no universal reader or safe workflow for every old game. Protect the original first, then use a compatible, documented capture method—or ask a preservation professional if the media or playback equipment is questionable.
How do I preserve old video games without damaging them?
Start by separating three jobs that are often confused: caring for the physical object, capturing the software data, and recording gameplay. A camera or video-capture device records what appears on a screen; it does not make a preservation copy of the game software. Likewise, a device that reads one cartridge family or disc format does not establish a workflow for other media.

Before handling the item, write down what it is and what you hope to preserve. Are you trying to retain the original software data, document a playable copy, preserve the packaging and manual, or record a particular game session? The answer changes the equipment and the recordkeeping you need.

- Set up safely: use a clean, stable work surface, clean hands, and no food or drink. Handle a disc by its edge and center hole, a floppy disk by its edges, and a cartridge by its casing.
- Stop if there is a warning sign: do not force a brittle case, flex a disc, open a floppy shell, or repeatedly test questionable media. Pause before playback or cleaning if an item is visibly damaged, contaminated, or unfamiliar.
For fragile or contaminated items, seek advice from a conservator or specialist familiar with that carrier. Cleaning instructions are format-specific: a method intended for magnetic tape should not be applied to a cartridge, floppy disk, or optical disc.

Preserve the object as well as its contents
A game can depend on more than its software image. Record the console or handheld it requires and retain related items such as the manual, packaging, inserts, controllers, power supply, and other documentation. The Library of Congress’s 2020 statement on video games describes games as media-based releases that may include cartridges or disc- and disk-based media, along with related documentation and materials. For games that depend on a proprietary platform, platform information is part of the preservation context.
Photographing the item and packaging can be a useful way to document their condition and markings. Record the date of capture, equipment and software used, settings, and any errors, too. Those records help someone interpret or verify the resulting files later.
What changes with each type of game media?
| Carrier | Safe handling | Capture considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Optical game disc | Hold by the outside edge and center hole; do not touch the data surface or flex the disc. | Use a compatible optical drive and account for platform-specific exceptions. A generic drive is not guaranteed to read every game disc. |
| Floppy disk | Hold by the edges, keep the disk in its protective enclosure, and do not open the shell. Avoid strong magnetic fields, dust, and extremes of temperature or humidity. | Specialist low-level imaging hardware exists, but the appropriate approach depends on disk size, encoding, and format. A conventional file copy may not be equivalent to a preservation capture. |
| Cartridge | Handle by the casing. Keep fingers and debris away from contacts and openings; do not open or insert an unknown, corroded, cracked, or modified cartridge into valuable hardware. | Identify the exact platform and use a compatible, documented reader or specialist service. No universal cartridge reader is established by the sources cited here. |
Optical game discs
The Library of Congress advises: “Handle optical discs (CDs, DVDs) by the edge and center hole only.” Dust, fingerprints, and scratches can interfere with reading. Do not flex a disc while removing it from a case, and do not attach or reposition adhesive labels.
For a disc with visible fingerprints, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends wiping with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth in straight strokes from the center toward the edge. If needed, distilled or deionized water may be used; let the disc dry completely before playback or storage. Avoid circular wiping, which can leave scratches that follow a more damaging path across the disc.

Cracks, delamination-like damage, and deep scratches are reasons to stop rather than keep retrying or attempt polishing. NARA notes that its holdings-maintenance procedures cannot correct scratches deep enough to affect readability. For a valuable or visibly damaged disc, get format-specific specialist guidance before attempting to clean or play it.
Floppy disks and other magnetic media
Keep a floppy disk in its protective enclosure and handle it by its edges. Do not open the shell to inspect or clean the disk. Store it upright and away from strong magnetic fields, direct sunlight, dust, and extreme temperature or humidity. The Library of Congress recommends cool, relatively dry, stable home storage for audiovisual materials; institutional environmental ranges should not be treated as a universal household prescription.
Legacy magnetic media have varied life expectancies, and compatible playback equipment can itself become difficult to find. NARA recommends copying legacy magnetic media into current storage as soon as possible. Its specific cautions about repeated playback and specialist handling apply to magnetic audio and video tape; they are not a floppy-disk cleaning procedure. The sensible general lesson is to avoid unnecessary playback of fragile legacy media and to use equipment that is appropriate and in good condition.

For floppy game data, a normal file copy and a preservation capture are not necessarily the same. The Game Preservation Society describes a forensic preservation standard and purpose-built approaches; KryoFlux describes USB hardware for low-level floppy reads. These are specialist, format-dependent options, not a beginner guarantee that a particular disk will work. Check compatibility with the exact disk format and platform before connecting or attempting a read.

Cartridges
Think of a cartridge as both an artifact and a container for electronic media. Hold the casing rather than touching contacts or reaching into openings. Do not use abrasive contact cleaning, liquids, or an unspecified “universal” dumper based on general advice: the institutional sources cited here do not establish those as safe cartridge-care or capture methods.
For software capture, first identify the exact console or handheld and cartridge family. Then verify a reader’s compatibility and instructions against authoritative documentation for that platform, or consult a specialist. Avoid trying an unknown or modified cartridge in valuable hardware simply to see whether it works.
How do I choose a digitizing device?
Choose by the exact carrier and platform, not by the broad label “game backup.” A floppy imaging controller is a specialist option for floppy media; optical discs need a compatible drive and may have platform-specific exceptions; cartridge hardware must match the particular system. The sources cited here do not establish one officially endorsed reader for all cartridges or a general-purpose device that handles every old game format.
Compare possible workflows using these questions:
- Compatibility: Does the device support this cartridge family, floppy size and encoding, or optical format—and the platform’s relevant exceptions?
- Condition: Is the original stable enough to read? Is the playback equipment known to be maintained? If not, stop and get an assessment rather than testing repeatedly.
- Purpose: Does the process produce a preservation-oriented capture, a convenient copy for access, or only a recording of gameplay? These outputs are not interchangeable.
- Verification and records: Can you retain the first capture, record how it was made, and check that stored copies remain unchanged?
- Practicality: Is compatible legacy hardware available, and can you operate the equipment and interpret errors? No comparative device prices or current availability are established here.
An external USB hard drive can serve as storage for game files; it is not a capture device and does not replace the original. NARA recommends a second backup copy for digitized video, and the Library of Congress lists external USB hard drives among possible media for software and game submissions. Use that storage guidance as part of a preservation plan, not as a claim that any one drive has a particular archival lifetime.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
What is a careful capture workflow?
- Document the item. Record the title, platform, edition or revision markings, publisher, language, condition, packaging, manual, inserts, and associated materials. Photographing the object and packaging can help record their state, although the Library of Congress game statement does not prescribe a required photography protocol.
- Assess before playback. Pause if the media is dirty, cracked, warped, deteriorating, contaminated, or otherwise suspect, or if you are unsure that the playback equipment is suitable. NARA cautions against using questionable equipment on fragile video records and recognizes trained professionals as an option when condition or technical requirements warrant it.
- Match the capture method to the carrier and platform. For floppy media, check specialist low-level imaging options against the disk format. For optical media, confirm drive compatibility and platform-specific exceptions. For a cartridge, verify a documented reader for the exact system or seek specialist help. Do not assume a generic USB drive can read all formats.
- Retain the first capture unchanged. Where the workflow permits, keep an unmodified preservation image or file set. Record the date, device and software, settings, and any read errors. NARA recommends technical and descriptive metadata and checksums for video digitization; the Library of Congress’s game guidance emphasizes descriptive and production metadata. Applied to game capture, these are useful recordkeeping principles, not specifications for a particular game-file format.
- Make a separate access copy if needed. Keep a convenient copy for playing or review distinct from the retained preservation capture. NARA distinguishes a high-quality preservation copy from a lower-bitrate, compressed access copy for video records. The same preservation-versus-access distinction is useful for game files, but it does not prescribe a specific game image format.
- Keep an independent backup. Store a second copy separately from the working copy, and record what each copy contains. A storage drive is only one part of this plan; it is not a substitute for the original media.
- Keep platform context with the files. Record dependencies and retain manuals and other accompanying materials. In its submission context, the Library of Congress recommends an emulated platform when available, or hardware with controllers and power supply when a virtual platform is unavailable.
NARA describes the aim of a preservation copy this way: “The purpose of a preservation copy is to create a high quality duplicate of the original record.” That statement is about video records. For game software, use the underlying distinction—retain a high-quality, minimally altered preservation capture and make any convenient access version separately—without treating video guidance as a game-format specification.
Should I clean an old game disc before backing it up?
Only if the disc has visible fingerprints or dust and its condition appears stable. Handle it by the edge and center hole, use a soft lint-free cloth, and wipe in straight strokes from center to edge. If needed, use distilled or deionized water and allow the disc to dry completely before playback or storage. Do not wipe in circles, flex it, or apply adhesive labels.
If the disc is cracked, deeply scratched, showing delamination-like damage, or otherwise questionable, do not polish it or keep retrying the drive. Cleaning cannot be assumed to restore damaged information; ask a specialist before proceeding.
How should I store old video game discs and cartridges?
Match storage to the carrier, protect it from avoidable environmental stress, and keep documentation with the collection. The Library of Congress recommends cool, relatively dry, stable home storage and upright storage for audiovisual media. NARA advises storing floppy disks upright in protective enclosures and away from strong magnetic fields. These are broad conservation principles, not a single temperature or humidity prescription for every home and every material.

- Collection records: Keep titles, platform details, revision markings, manuals, packaging, and capture notes together so a future user can identify what the software requires.
Do not wait for a carrier to become unplayable before considering a preservation copy. NARA notes that legacy magnetic media can have varied life expectancies and that playback equipment may be a constraint; the same practical concern makes it worth planning format-appropriate access while suitable equipment is available.
What can preservation sources establish—and what remains specific to your case?
The Library of Congress reported in 2020 that its National Audio-Visual Conservation Center held more than 5,000 videogames assembled through copyright deposit and private donation. The collection ranged from 5.25-inch floppy disks to modern console cartridges and included packaging, documentation, and related magazines. This is a dated collection figure, not a current census of games or a measure of how many privately owned copies remain readable.
The preservation guidance cited here does not quantify a failure rate for privately owned discs, cartridges, or disks. It also does not establish a universal cartridge reader, cartridge-specific cleaning chemical, current hardware prices, or a universal legal right to make, decrypt, retain, or use a particular game copy. Rights, licence terms, anti-circumvention rules, institutional exemptions, and permitted uses vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. The Library of Congress mentions rights clearance for a specific uncompiled-source-code submission context; that should not be read as a general ruling on private copying. Check the rules that apply where you live and to the specific game before making or using a copy.
