Nintendo Switch error code 2002-2060 usually appears when the console is downloading software or installing a game update. Nintendo groups it with errors 2002-2049 through 2002-2064, whose troubleshooting path is to update the console, check for corrupt data, redownload the affected software, isolate the microSD card, and seek repair if the failure continues without one.
Start with the least destructive test: restart the console, then retry the download with the microSD card removed. That result helps distinguish a damaged game installation or card from a problem with the console itself.

What does error code 2002-2060 mean?
Nintendo does not publish a separate technical explanation for the final digits “2060.” It includes this code in the 2002-2049 through 2002-2064 error family, which is associated with downloading software or updating a game.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, the console is having trouble accessing, writing, validating, or using software data. Possible causes include corrupt download data, a failing or poorly seated microSD card, an incompatible or counterfeit card, a damaged update, or a fault involving the console’s storage or microSD slot. The code alone does not prove that the SD card—or the game cartridge—is defective.

Fix Nintendo Switch error 2002-2060 in order
1. Restart the console normally
- Hold the POWER button for about three seconds.
- Select Power Options.
- Select Restart.
If the console is frozen, hold the POWER button longer to force it off, then turn it on again. Do not repeatedly force shutdown while the console is working normally, especially during a download or update.
2. Install the latest system update
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll down and select System.
- Select System Update.
- Install any available update and retry the affected download.
Nintendo lists system software updates as the first troubleshooting step for this error family. See Nintendo’s grouped error-code guidance if your menu wording differs by region or system version.
3. Check the affected software for corrupt data
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Manage Software.
- Choose the game or application involved when the error appeared.
- Select Check for Corrupt Data.
Let the check finish and follow any repair or redownload prompt. This check does not delete your save data. Nintendo says save data is stored in the console’s system memory rather than on the microSD card.
4. Delete and redownload the affected digital game
If checking for corrupt data does not help, remove the installed software and download it again:

- Go to System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software.
- Select the affected game.
- Select Delete Software.
- Redownload it using the Nintendo Account that purchased the title.
Delete Software is not the same as deleting save data. It removes the installed game and update files. The redownload may still fail if the console automatically writes the replacement data to a faulty microSD card, so test with the card removed if the error returns.
5. Remove the microSD card and retry
This is the most useful diagnostic step for separating a card problem from an internal-storage or console problem.
- Completely power off the console.
- Remove the microSD card.
- Turn the console on and retry the download or update to system memory.
Interpret the result as follows:
| Result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The download works without the card | The card, its filesystem, or the card connection is implicated. | Back up screenshots and videos, then replace or format the card. |
| The error remains without the card | The problem may involve the software, internal storage, or console hardware. | Redownload the affected title and continue testing; repair may be necessary. |
| Only one game fails | That title’s installation or update is the leading suspect. | Check corrupt data, then delete and redownload that game. |
| Several games or updates fail | A card or console-level problem is more likely than one damaged installation. | Test another supported card, then contact Nintendo if the failure persists. |
6. Reseat or replace the microSD card
With the console powered off, inspect the card for visible damage or dirt and reinsert it firmly. Do not remove the card while the console is powered on or actively reading or writing data.
If the error continues, try a known-compatible card from a reputable retailer. Avoid unusually cheap, used, unbranded, or suspiciously high-capacity cards. A counterfeit card can appear to work on a computer yet fail when the console writes enough data to expose its false capacity.

Nintendo recommends trying another supported card when this error persists. A card that works in a computer is not automatically proven healthy for sustained console use, and a card that fails in the console does not by itself prove that the console is defective.
7. Format the card only as a last resort
Formatting can resolve filesystem corruption, but it is destructive and is not guaranteed to fix a faulty card slot or console.
Before formatting:
- Copy screenshots and captured videos to a computer or other safe location.
- Understand that formatting permanently erases the card’s contents.
- Do not assume a computer backup will preserve installed Switch software in a directly usable form.
- Confirm that you have access to the Nintendo Account that purchased your digital games.
On the original Nintendo Switch family, the menu path is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSystem Settings → System → Formatting Options → Format microSD Card → Continue

Nintendo’s formatting instructions warn that the process cannot be undone. Downloadable software can be redownloaded, but screenshots and videos stored on the card are erased.
Will formatting delete your save data?
Nintendo says game save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the microSD card. Therefore, formatting the card does not ordinarily delete game saves. However, it can erase:
- Downloaded games and applications stored on the card
- Game updates and downloadable content stored on the card
- Screenshots and videos stored on the card
Cloud backup availability depends on the game and your Nintendo Switch Online membership; not every title supports cloud saves. Do not format until you have protected any media you want to keep.
Which microSD card is compatible?
Original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
Nintendo lists support for:
- microSD: up to 2 GB
- microSDHC: 4 GB to 32 GB
- microSDXC: 64 GB and above
A system update is required to use a microSDXC card. Nintendo recommends UHS-I cards with transfer speeds of approximately 60–95 MB/s. See Nintendo’s microSD Card FAQ for compatibility details.

Nintendo Switch 2
Do not buy an ordinary microSD or microSDXC card for the same purpose on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards. The original Switch family and Switch 2 have different storage-card requirements.
Digital game versus physical game card
If the error appears while downloading an update for a physical game card, follow the same update and storage tests first. The problem may concern the downloaded update rather than the cartridge.
If the console fails while reading the game card itself—for example, it does not recognize the cartridge or repeatedly reports a game-card read problem—this may be a different fault from a download/update error. Remove and reinsert the game card with the console powered off, and do not assume that replacing the microSD card will fix a damaged cartridge or cartridge slot.

Also confirm that the console has enough free space in system memory or on the card. Low storage is worth checking, but it is not Nintendo’s published definition of error 2002-2060.
Interrupted updates, power loss during writing, liquid exposure, impact damage, bent contacts, and an intermittently disappearing card can all make a hardware or storage fault more likely. If the console has unofficial firmware or modified storage, Nintendo’s standard support path may not apply.
When Nintendo repair is necessary
Use Nintendo’s official service process if the error remains after updating the console, checking corrupt data, redownloading the affected software, testing without a microSD card, and trying another supported card. Repair is especially appropriate when:
- Downloads fail with no microSD card installed.
- Multiple known-compatible cards fail.
- Several games or updates produce the same error.
- The card is recognized only intermittently or disappears after restarting.
- The console or card slot has visible damage or liquid exposure.
Nintendo’s grouped instructions use continued failure with multiple supported cards or during direct system-memory downloads as the repair threshold. U.S. readers should start with Nintendo’s official service-request guidance. Warranty coverage, repair options, and fees vary by region and are determined during the service process; no repair outcome or free service should be assumed.
