For most AMD gamers, choose Bazzite. It offers the simplest SteamOS-like experience, atomic updates, rollback support and strong handheld and living-room integration. Choose Nobara for a conventional Fedora-based desktop—especially with NVIDIA hardware. Choose CachyOS if you want Arch, newer packages and extensive control over kernels, schedulers and gaming tools.

There is no universal FPS winner. Your GPU, game library, anti-cheat requirements, update preferences and tolerance for troubleshooting matter more than the distro label.

What Linux gaming looks like in 2026

Linux gaming is viable because Valve Proton allows many Windows games to run through Linux. Proton combines Wine with graphics components such as DXVK and VKD3D-Proton, which translate DirectX workloads to Vulkan. Native Linux games, Lutris, Heroic, Bottles, Gamescope and Steam Input fill out the rest of the ecosystem.

CyberPowerPC Gaming PC, AMD Ryzen 5 5500, Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB | Gamer Master, 8GB DDR4, 500GB PCIe 4.0 SSD, WiFi Ready & Windows 11 Home (GMA3100A3)
  • System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 8GB DDR4 | 500GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support

That does not mean every Windows game works. Compatibility can depend on anti-cheat configuration, DRM, external launchers, video codecs, game patches, GPU drivers and multiplayer-server policy. Competitive shooters, Game Pass PC titles, some VR software and games with unusual launchers deserve particular scrutiny.

Bazzite vs CachyOS vs Nobara

Distribution Base System model Best suited to
Bazzite Fedora Atomic / Universal Blue Image-based, atomic updates Beginners, AMD systems, handhelds and HTPCs
CachyOS Arch Linux Conventional rolling release Enthusiasts who want current packages and tuning
Nobara Fedora Conventional mutable desktop General-purpose gaming PCs and Fedora users

Update philosophy

  • Bazzite: The operating system is updated as an image. The previous image is retained, making rollback much easier than on a typical desktop installation. Its documentation references a 90-day image backlog.
  • CachyOS: Rolling updates provide newer kernels, drivers and applications quickly, but can expose regressions sooner and occasionally require manual intervention. An LTS kernel is available alongside the default stable kernel.
  • Nobara: Uses conventional package management and updates. It feels familiar, but does not provide Bazzite’s image-based rollback model by default.

Bazzite: the best console-like Linux gaming experience

Bazzite is Fedora-based and built around an atomic image system. It offers KDE Plasma and GNOME desktop images, plus Deck, handheld and HTPC variants. Steam is preinstalled, and the project integrates tools for Lutris and other non-Steam launchers.

Why choose Bazzite

  • Atomic updates reduce the risk of a bad base-system update leaving the installation unusable.
  • The previous image can be selected during boot when a kernel, Mesa or driver update causes trouble.
  • Deck images provide a controller-friendly Steam Gaming Mode session.
  • It is particularly attractive for AMD desktops, living-room PCs and supported handhelds.
  • HDR and VRR are prominent parts of the project’s gaming focus.
  • It minimizes the number of choices a new Linux gamer must make during installation.

On supported handheld scenarios, Bazzite can automatically roll back after three failed boots. Atomic updates are not magic, however: they do not undo game configuration, user files, incompatible Flatpaks or every hardware problem.

Steam Gaming Mode and hardware caveats

Bazzite’s -deck images boot into Steam Gaming Mode and expose the desktop through Steam’s power menu. This is the closest of the three to a SteamOS-style appliance.

Do not treat all Bazzite images as interchangeable. Bazzite currently labels NVIDIA and Intel support in Steam Gaming Mode and HTPC images as beta and documents known issues. For those GPUs, a normal desktop image is the safer starting point if you need a reliable general-purpose system.

  • AMD: Bazzite’s strongest use case, especially on all-AMD systems and supported handhelds.
  • Intel: Prefer a normal desktop image unless you have checked the current Steam Gaming Mode support for your hardware.
  • NVIDIA: Desktop images are available, but Steam Gaming Mode and HTPC support require more caution. Older cards may be restricted to Nouveau, whose performance and stability can differ substantially from the proprietary driver.

Bazzite’s installation variants and session choices are documented in its installation guide. Its FAQ covers additional GPU limitations.

Bazzite trade-offs

The immutable host can surprise users who expect to install every package directly with a traditional package manager. Flatpaks, containers, rpm-ostree and project-provided ujust commands are often the appropriate tools. That model is excellent for a stable gaming appliance, but less convenient if you frequently modify the host system.

Other possible failure modes include Steam Gaming Mode black screens, Gamescope display-selection problems on some dual-AMD systems, Flatpak permission issues and regressions introduced by fast-moving graphics components. A live USB may also behave differently depending on how it was created; LTT Labs reported needing a particular boot approach when using Ventoy and recommended Balena Etcher in its test scenario.

CachyOS: the enthusiast’s choice

CachyOS is Arch-based and focuses on performance-oriented packages, current software and user control. Its online installer advertises more than 17 desktop environments, while its handheld edition currently lists ASUS ROG Ally, Steam Deck LCD and OLED, Lenovo Legion Go and Legion Go S support.

Why choose CachyOS

  • CPU-specific package builds and a custom kernel may help in some CPU-limited or frame-time-sensitive workloads.
  • You get multiple kernel choices, including stable and LTS options.
  • The gaming documentation covers Proton variants, shader caches, HDR and anti-cheat troubleshooting.
  • proton-cachyos-slr is documented as a possible option for some EAC or BattlEye problems.
  • The system offers extensive control over schedulers, packages, kernels and desktop environments.

CachyOS also includes a game-performance wrapper that can temporarily switch to a performance power profile, set the CPU governor to performance and apply a gaming scheduler profile when available. It restores the previous profile after the game exits.

These are tuning mechanisms, not guaranteed FPS multipliers. CachyOS’s own kernel documentation says its real-time kernel does not improve gaming performance and may perform worse because more tasks are preempted. Optimized compilation and scheduler choices can improve responsiveness in one workload while making little difference—or introducing a regression—in another.

CachyOS gaming commands

If the required gaming tools are not installed, CachyOS documents:

sudo pacman -S protonup-qt

For its Steam Linux Runtime-based Proton build, the documented command is:

sudo pacman -S proton-cachyos-slr

Restart Steam after installing or changing Proton tools. These commands come from the current CachyOS gaming guide; package names and recommendations can change.

CachyOS trade-offs

Arch’s flexibility comes with a maintenance cost. Rolling updates can introduce kernel, NVIDIA-module or desktop regressions. The AUR adds useful software but also adds third-party maintenance and trust considerations. CachyOS advises users to monitor official announcements for updates requiring manual intervention, and incorrect troubleshooting can make problems worse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose CachyOS because you want control—not because “optimized” automatically means a fixed percentage more FPS.

Nobara: the balanced conventional desktop

Nobara is an independent Fedora-based project, not an official Fedora or Red Hat edition. It provides gaming-oriented defaults, a conventional mutable desktop, a driver-management utility and separate images for different hardware and use cases.

Why choose Nobara

  • Official, GNOME, KDE, Steam-HTPC and Steam-Handheld images are available.
  • Dedicated NVIDIA images include the proprietary driver.
  • The first-boot workflow guides users through updates and additional packages.
  • The Driver Manager makes hardware and driver discovery less intimidating.
  • KDE provides a familiar Windows-like desktop for users moving from Windows.
  • Normal package management is more straightforward than Bazzite’s immutable-host model.

The official download page showed Nobara 43 images dated April 19, 2026, with NVIDIA variants dated April 24–25, 2026, at the time covered by the supplied research. Those are ISO dates, not a guarantee of the latest packages after installation. NVIDIA images may take one to two minutes on first boot while DKMS builds kernel modules.

Nobara is often the most practical recommendation for an NVIDIA desktop because of its dedicated proprietary-driver images. That is a usability recommendation, not proof that it is technically superior in every benchmark or hardware generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nobara trade-offs

NVIDIA DKMS can add boot delays or fail after a kernel change. Conventional updates do not provide Bazzite-style image rollback by default, and third-party repositories add dependency and maintenance complexity. Nobara’s official page also states that it is an independent hobby project, is not affiliated with Fedora or Red Hat and comes with no warranty.

Gaming performance: is one distro faster?

Usually, no—not decisively. Performance depends more on the GPU driver and Mesa version, kernel, CPU/GPU bottleneck, Proton version, shader compilation, power profile, game patch, compositor, Gamescope settings, resolution and upscaling configuration.

In LTT Labs’ 2026 comparison, games including Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077 and Doom: The Dark Ages performed broadly similarly across the tested distributions. The testers recommended CachyOS and Bazzite for practical reasons, but did not establish a permanent performance ranking. Their testing also used different Mesa and kernel versions, illustrating how quickly distro benchmarks age.

Bazzite may feel smoother because its integration, Gamescope workflow and power-management defaults reduce configuration work. CachyOS may help in some CPU-limited scenarios. Nobara may get you to a working desktop faster. None of those statements proves a universal average-FPS advantage.

Choose by hardware and use case

AMD desktop

Start with Bazzite if you want simple updates, HDR/VRR experimentation or a Steam-focused interface. Pick Nobara for a conventional desktop, or CachyOS if you are comfortable maintaining Arch-like software.

NVIDIA desktop

Start with Nobara if you want a normal desktop and the least manual driver assembly. CachyOS is a strong alternative for experienced users who want newer packages and control. Bazzite remains viable as a desktop image, but do not make Steam Gaming Mode the default recommendation for NVIDIA.

Intel graphics

Use a normal desktop image first. Intel support can be perfectly usable, but the SteamOS-like experience should not be assumed to be equally mature on every generation and configuration.

Handheld

Compare the exact model against each project’s support list. Bazzite, CachyOS Handheld and Nobara Steam-Handheld can provide attractive alternatives to Windows, but booting successfully does not guarantee working power management, sleep, controls, firmware, TDP adjustment or battery reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Living-room PC

Choose Bazzite-Deck for the most console-like workflow. Nobara’s Steam-HTPC image is another option, particularly if you want a conventional Fedora-based environment. Verify GPU compatibility before choosing either image.

General-purpose PC

Choose Nobara if the machine will also handle productivity, browsing, development and ordinary desktop software. Choose Bazzite Desktop if you value rollback and do not mind Flatpak-first administration. Choose CachyOS if customization is part of the appeal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

HDR, VRR and controllers

HDR and VRR are now practical Linux features, but they remain dependent on the GPU, driver, desktop compositor, monitor, cable, refresh-rate combination and game. Bazzite advertises HDR and VRR prominently. CachyOS documents HDR configuration and NVIDIA-specific workarounds. Nobara may use the same underlying graphics stack, but behavior will vary between desktops and hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo pacman -S vk-hdr-layer-kwin6-git

and the environment variable:

ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1

That is a version-sensitive snapshot, not a permanent universal fix.

For controller or handheld problems, check Steam Input, inputplumber, device firmware, Gamescope and the project’s model-specific support notes. A distro’s handheld image is not a guarantee that every button or power feature works.

Installation checklist

  1. Back up important files. Dual-booting and partition changes are not risk-free.
  2. Check the exact hardware. Record GPU generation, laptop or handheld model, Wi-Fi chipset and display setup.
  3. Check your games. Search ProtonDB and Are We Anti Cheat Yet before changing operating systems.
  4. Verify UEFI and Secure Boot requirements. Follow the chosen project’s current installation documentation.
  5. Verify the ISO checksum. Do not skip this for an operating-system image.
  6. Test the live USB. Check Wi-Fi, audio, display outputs and controllers before installing.
  7. Choose the right image. Bazzite Desktop and Bazzite-Deck are different recommendations; Nobara’s standard and NVIDIA ISOs also serve different hardware.
  8. Update immediately after installation. Then install Steam, launchers and games.
  9. Keep recovery options available. Bazzite users should understand image rollback, CachyOS users should know how to select the LTS kernel, and Nobara users should know how to use a fallback kernel and investigate DKMS.

Common problems and the correct first response

A game will not launch

  1. Check ProtonDB and the game’s current reports.
  2. Try Proton Experimental or a known-good Proton version.
  3. Check for EAC, BattlEye, external launchers or third-party DRM.
  4. Try Proton-GE or Proton-CachyOS where appropriate.
  5. Disable overlays and unusual launch options.
  6. Only remove a Proton prefix after backing up saves and configuration.

Changing distributions will not bypass a developer’s server-side anti-cheat decision.

Black screen after an update

  • Bazzite: Select the previous image from the bootloader or use the project’s documented recovery path.
  • CachyOS: Select the LTS kernel from the boot menu.
  • Nobara: Try a fallback kernel and investigate NVIDIA DKMS and module status.

Exact rollback and recovery commands are version-sensitive, so use the current documentation for your installed release rather than copying an old command from a forum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR does not work

Confirm that you are using the expected Wayland session, HDR is enabled on the monitor, the cable and refresh rate are suitable, the driver supports the feature, Gamescope is configured correctly and the game actually outputs HDR.

Do you need a gaming distro?

No. Fedora KDE, Fedora Atomic variants, Arch, EndeavourOS, SteamOS on supported hardware, Linux Mint and other distributions can be excellent choices. Gaming-oriented distributions mainly package useful defaults, drivers, tools and recovery workflows. They do not create a separate class of game compatibility.

Choose a general distribution instead if you value upstream support, a conservative desktop, a specific development workflow or minimal project-specific customization more than preinstalled gaming conveniences.

Final decision tree

  • Want a console-like system? Choose Bazzite, preferably on AMD hardware or a listed handheld.
  • Want a normal desktop that also games? Choose Nobara.
  • Use NVIDIA and dislike experimentation? Start with Nobara’s appropriate NVIDIA image.
  • Want the newest packages, kernel choices and tuning? Choose CachyOS.
  • Want easy rollback and low maintenance? Choose Bazzite.
  • Play anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer games? Check compatibility first and consider keeping Windows available, regardless of distro.

The best Linux gaming distribution in 2026 is the one that removes your biggest risk: Bazzite removes maintenance friction, Nobara removes much of the conventional desktop and NVIDIA setup friction, and CachyOS removes limits on customization. None removes the need to verify your hardware and games.
