“No Session Available” usually means ARK cannot discover or reach the other server in your cluster; it does not by itself prove that a save or hard drive is damaged. Start with the player-side filter, then check the shared clusterid, shared cluster directory, server status, and network ports. If the browser remains incomplete, connect with the server’s IP address and port while you finish troubleshooting.

Use this diagnosis order

Work through these checks in sequence. The first items are safe for players and take seconds; the later checks require server-panel or host access.

  1. Show password-protected servers. At the lower-left of ARK’s server interface, enable Show Password Protected if either clustered server has a password.
  2. Confirm both instances are running. A cluster cannot advertise a map whose server process is stopped, still rebooting, or not fully provisioned.
  3. Match the cluster ID. Every server intended for unofficial Cross-ARK travel must launch with exactly the same -clusterid value, including capitalization and punctuation.
  4. Use one shared cluster directory. Every server must point -ClusterDirOverride at the same storage location. A different path can make discovery or transfers fail.
  5. Check firewall and router rules. Allow incoming traffic for each instance’s game, peer, and query ports; add the RCON port only if you use RCON.
  6. Bypass the browser temporarily. In ARK’s console, run open IP:PORT, or include the password with open IP:PORT password.

Do not change several settings at once. After each correction, restart the affected server, wait for it to finish loading, and test the Obelisk list again. Record what changed and whether the result was visibility, direct connection, or successful transfer; those are separate tests.

What “No Session Available” means

ARK’s message is a connection and discovery symptom. The game is not finding a session that satisfies the current map, password, cluster, or network conditions. Common causes include a hidden password-protected listing, different cluster IDs, separate cluster storage, incomplete host-side provisioning, a stopped instance, or blocked ports.

  • Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
  • Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
  • Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts

There is no single fix that applies to every ARK edition, server host, or version. Treat the message as a decision point: first determine whether the server is merely hidden, then whether the cluster is configured consistently, and finally whether traffic can reach the machine. A successful login to one map does not prove that its partner map is configured correctly.

Player-side fixes before changing server files

Reveal password-protected servers

If the missing map has a password, enable Show Password Protected in the lower-left of the server browser or transfer interface. A password-protected cluster can be healthy while remaining invisible when this filter is off. Enter the server password only after the session appears.

This check is especially important when one map is visible and another is absent. It distinguishes a browser filter problem from a broken cluster without risking saves or character data. If you are helping another player, ask them to verify the same setting rather than assuming every client sees an identical list.

Confirm you are checking the correct transfer screen

At an Obelisk or supply drop, choose Travel to Another ARK to view eligible clustered servers. The destination must be running and configured for the same cluster. If the destination is listed but joining fails, continue with the network and port checks rather than repeatedly uploading your character.

Check the map name and session name carefully. A server can be online under a slightly different session name, while the transfer list still excludes it because its cluster identity or storage does not match. Refresh after a full server restart rather than relying on a stale browser result.

Minimum requirements for unofficial Cross-ARK travel

Dynamic travel between unofficial servers needs at least two dedicated server instances. They must be launched with a common cluster identity and access to the same cluster storage. Both processes also need to remain reachable on their assigned network ports. If any one of these conditions is missing, the terminal cannot offer a reliable destination.

  • Two or more instances: one server alone cannot provide a second map for travel.
  • One exact cluster ID: every participating launch command must use the same value.
  • One underlying cluster directory: the path must resolve to the same storage, not merely similarly named local folders.
  • Running processes: each map must be started and fully loaded before testing.
  • Reachable ports: firewall and router rules must permit the game, peer, and query traffic assigned to each instance.

These requirements are independent. Matching IDs cannot compensate for separate storage, and shared storage cannot make a stopped server appear online.

Make the cluster configuration agree

Use the same -clusterid everywhere

Unofficial Cross-ARK travel requires at least two servers launched with a common cluster ID. ARK uses that value to decide which terminals should list which servers. If even one map uses a different value, the servers are treated as unrelated and cannot see one another for cluster travel.

Use a distinctive ID rather than a generic word. Reusing a common ID can pollute the transfer list with unrelated servers that happen to use the same identifier. Pick one value, document it, and copy it exactly into every active launch command. Do not rely on a control-panel template if the panel has generated a different command for one map.

Use one shared -ClusterDirOverride path

Cluster files are stored under the cluster directory and cluster ID. Every server in the cluster must resolve that directory to the same underlying storage, not merely to folders with similar names. Separate paths can produce a deceptive result: a server may appear in a list, yet uploaded survivors, items, or tames cannot be downloaded on the other map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a self-hosted setup, verify that both server processes have permission to read and write the shared location. On a multi-machine setup, confirm that the path is actually shared and mounted identically for both processes; two local folders with the same spelling are not shared storage. Check the active mount or network share after a reboot, because a missing mount can silently make the process fall back to an empty local directory.

Do not “fix” a transfer problem by creating a second cluster folder and copying files back and forth while servers are running. Stop the affected instances first, establish one authoritative directory, and then restart them so both processes open the same files.

Example launch configuration

Replace the placeholder values with your own distinctive ID and storage path. The important requirement is that both lines use identical values for -clusterid and -ClusterDirOverride.

ShooterGameServer TheIsland?SessionName=MySession1 -clusterid=<CLUSTER_NAME> -ClusterDirOverride="<PATH>"
ShooterGameServer ScorchedEarth_P?SessionName=MySession2 -clusterid=<CLUSTER_NAME> -ClusterDirOverride="<PATH>"

The map name and session name can differ. The cluster ID and shared directory cannot. Keep the path quoted when it contains spaces, and check the final command actually used to start each process rather than relying on a saved template that may not be active.

When comparing commands, inspect every character after the equals sign. A trailing space, different capitalization, or a path that points to a per-map subfolder can be enough to split the cluster. Save a copy of the known-good command before editing it.

Managed-hosting provisioning checks

Some managed hosts create a cluster through their control panel or support team instead of exposing the storage path directly. Their documented provisioning sequence commonly requires two servers in the same location, a support request to link them, several provider-controlled reboots, and both instances started after provisioning completes.

  1. Verify that the two servers are in the same provider location or cluster offering.
  2. Request cluster activation through the host’s support or control-panel workflow.
  3. Allow the host to complete its reboots and synchronization steps before testing transfers.
  4. Leave the managed cluster save location and cluster file path unchanged.
  5. Start both instances and check that each has finished loading before opening an Obelisk.

Do not edit a managed cluster’s save path in a custom command-line manager unless the host explicitly instructs you to do so. Overriding the provider’s path can split the shared storage and make a previously working cluster appear empty or inconsistent. If the host says provisioning is complete but one map remains absent, provide the map names, instance IDs, and startup times so support can verify that both servers were linked to the same cluster.

Check firewall, router, and per-instance ports

A correct cluster ID cannot overcome blocked traffic. Dedicated-server guidance requires firewall and router rules that permit incoming connections to the host. If the servers run behind a router, forward the required ports to the machine running ARK and ensure the operating-system firewall allows the same traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple instances need distinct port assignments. Keep separate values for each server’s game port, peer port, and query port. Add a separate RCON port when RCON is enabled. A port collision can leave one process running while its listing or game traffic is unreachable.

  • Check the server panel or launch command for the actual game and query ports.
  • Compare those values with the router’s forwarding rules.
  • Allow the ports through the host firewall for the correct protocol and executable.
  • Restart the server after changing rules, then test from a client outside the host’s local network when possible.

Do not assume that seeing a server in a local browser proves internet reachability. Query traffic, game traffic, and peer or cluster traffic can be handled by different ports and rules. Likewise, forwarding only the query port may make a server visible without allowing a player to join it.

Connect directly while the browser is unreliable

Use ARK’s console

Open the in-game console and enter:

open IP:PORT

For a password-protected server, append the password separated by a space:

open IP:PORT password

Use the connection IP and game port supplied by the host, not a website address or query port. A successful direct connection proves that the game endpoint is reachable even if the cluster list is filtered or incomplete; it does not, by itself, prove that shared transfer storage is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the IP and port together when reporting the result. “The server is online” is not enough information if the command used the wrong port. If direct connect works but Travel to Another ARK remains empty, return to the cluster ID, shared directory, and password-visibility checks.

Add the server to Steam Favorites

Steam users can open Steam → View → Game Servers → Favorites and add the server using its query information. This gives you a persistent listing while ARK’s own browser catches up or applies an unwanted filter. If the favorite shows the server but the Obelisk does not, focus on password visibility and cluster settings rather than reinstalling the game.

Verify transfers without losing inventory

Normal clustered travel

At an Obelisk or supply drop, Travel to Another ARK starts the normal clustered transfer flow. The destination should be listed when its server is running, its cluster ID matches, and the shared directory is available to both processes.

Use a low-risk test first: travel with no valuable inventory or a disposable survivor only after confirming that the destination is visible. Confirm that the destination map loads and that the character arrives before attempting a full move.

Manual upload and download

ARK also provides an upload/download workflow for survivors and other data. Use it only when you understand the inventory risk: uploading the player character, logging out, joining another server, and downloading that character data can destroy the character’s inventory. Move valuable items according to the game’s transfer rules before attempting this fallback, and avoid treating it as a harmless test.

Manual transfer is not a substitute for repairing a split cluster directory. If the destination cannot read the uploaded data, repeating the upload can create confusion and additional loss. Fix the storage and identity settings first, then use a small test transfer.

Self-hosted and managed clusters: which checks differ?

Area Self-hosted cluster Managed cluster
Configuration control Administrator sets clusterid, shared storage, firewall rules, and port forwarding. Host may apply clustering through support or a control panel; available settings depend on the service.
Storage topology Administrator must provide one shared cluster directory and verify read/write access for both processes. Provider supplies or manages the cluster path; changing it can break synchronization.
Operational work Administrator installs, starts, restarts, and validates every instance. Provider may perform linking and reboots, but the customer still must start both servers and test access.
Browser fallback Use the host’s IP and game port with open IP:PORT. Use the connection details supplied by the host with the same direct-connect command.

Direct connection is useful in both environments. It bypasses an incomplete browser, but it cannot repair mismatched IDs, separate storage, or a stopped destination process. Self-hosting offers control over every setting but also makes the administrator responsible for mounts, permissions, forwarding, and restarts. Managed hosting reduces that maintenance, while provider support and provisioning steps become part of the troubleshooting path.

Troubleshoot by the symptom you see

No clustered server appears at all

  • Turn on Show Password Protected.
  • Confirm the destination process is running and has completed startup.
  • Check that both launch commands use the same -clusterid.
  • Test a direct connection to the destination IP and game port.

The server appears, but transfers fail

  • Compare the complete -ClusterDirOverride path on every server.
  • Confirm both processes can read and write the same underlying directory.
  • Check that the provider has finished clustering and that no managed path was edited.
  • Restart both servers after correcting storage, then create a small, nonessential transfer test.

Direct connect fails too

  • Recheck the IP and game port; query and game ports are not interchangeable.
  • Verify router forwarding and host-firewall rules for that instance.
  • Look for a second server using the same port.
  • Confirm the server is listening after its latest restart rather than merely marked online by a panel.

Only one map in a two-map cluster works

Treat the working map as a control. Compare its launch arguments, port assignments, process status, and storage permissions with the missing map. One differing cluster ID, a local-only directory, or a blocked port is enough to isolate the failure to that instance. Make one correction on the failing map, restart it, and repeat the same visibility and direct-connect tests.

When to contact the host or administrator

Escalate after collecting the exact map names, server IP and ports, startup status, cluster ID values (without sharing passwords), and the result of a direct-connect attempt. For a managed service, ask the host to confirm that both servers are linked, have completed their reboots, and reference the same managed cluster save path. For self-hosting, have the administrator inspect the active process command lines, filesystem mounts, and firewall logs.

That information lets support distinguish a hidden listing from a provisioning, storage, or network problem without asking you to delete saves or repeatedly upload a character. Do not send account passwords in a support ticket; provide only the non-secret settings needed to identify the mismatch.

Final checklist

  • Visibility: Show Password Protected is enabled when needed.
  • Identity: every server uses the same distinctive -clusterid.
  • Storage: every server uses the same -ClusterDirOverride location.
  • Provisioning: managed linking and reboots are complete, and both instances are running.
  • Networking: game, peer, query, and optional RCON ports are unique, forwarded, and allowed.
  • Fallback: open IP:PORT (with a password when required) works before you test transfers.
  • Safety: you understand that manual character upload/download can destroy inventory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ARK say “No Session Available” when my other map is online?

The destination may be hidden because password-protected servers are filtered, or it may use a different -clusterid, cluster directory, port, or provider provisioning state. Enable Show Password Protected, confirm both processes are running, and compare the active launch settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What must match between ARK cluster servers?

Every participating server needs the same -clusterid and the same underlying -ClusterDirOverride storage. Map names and session names can differ, but the cluster identity and shared directory cannot.

Can I join an ARK server directly if it is missing from the list?

Yes. Open ARK’s console and run open IP:PORT, or open IP:PORT password for a password-protected server. Use the game port supplied by the host, not the query port.

Why is the server visible but my uploaded survivor or items are missing?

That usually points to separate cluster storage or a path that is not mounted or writable by both processes. Verify the complete -ClusterDirOverride value and the underlying shared directory before attempting another transfer.

Should I upload my character to test the cluster?

Avoid using a valuable character as a test. Uploading, logging out, joining another server, and downloading the character can destroy its inventory. Repair identity, storage, and networking first, then use a disposable or empty-inventory test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask a managed ARK host to verify?

Ask the provider to confirm that both servers are in the same location or cluster offering, were linked through its provisioning process, completed the required reboots, and still reference the provider-managed cluster save path. Start both instances before retesting.

The Bottom Line

Fix “No Session Available” from least risky to most technical: reveal password-protected listings, make sure both maps are running, match the exact -clusterid, point every server at one shared -ClusterDirOverride directory, and open the required game, peer, query, and optional RCON ports. Use open IP:PORT to separate browser problems from network problems, and never use a valuable character upload as a casual test.
