Implants, hacking, autonomous systems and powerful weapons matter, but so do the people who control them, the workers and neighborhoods left vulnerable, and the choices a player can make inside that imbalance.
“High tech, low life” is a useful shorthand for this tension, not an official checklist. Neon signs, rain and dark alleys can establish a cyberpunk look, yet a game needs a meaningful relationship between technology, power and lived conditions to move beyond cyberpunk decoration.

Cyberpunk is a flexible genre, not a checklist
There is no universally accepted test that declares a game cyberpunk. Different works emphasize different parts of the tradition: one may focus on body modification, another on corporate surveillance, another on hackers operating outside official systems. A game can therefore be recognizably cyberpunk without containing every familiar image or mechanic.
A useful way to think about the genre is as a recurring conflict. Sophisticated technology is available, visible and consequential, while social conditions remain precarious, unequal or actively degrading. The central question is not simply whether a city has holograms. It is who owns the infrastructure, who can afford enhancements, who bears the risks and whether individuals can resist the systems shaping their lives.

CD PROJEKT RED’s own discussion of the word “rebel” observes that some concepts have shared meanings but no single definition everyone accepts without adding qualifications. That observation is not a formal definition of cyberpunk, but it illustrates why genre boundaries remain interpretive. Treat the following traits as strong signals and questions to ask, rather than mandatory boxes to tick.
Technology changes bodies and everyday life
Cyberpunk technology is usually intimate. It is not confined to a distant laboratory or a starship; it is embedded in a person’s body, job, apartment, weapon or social identity. The player should be able to see how technical systems alter what characters can do and how they are treated.
Augmentation and the modified body
Cybernetic limbs, sensory upgrades, neural interfaces and other implants turn the body into a platform that can be repaired, upgraded, rented or controlled. This creates practical gameplay possibilities—new movement options, combat abilities or access to restricted networks—while also raising questions about consent and dependency. If an enhancement is required to compete for work, is it really a free choice? If removing it would be dangerous, who owns the body that contains it?
Hacking as an active power
Networks make information a form of leverage. In a cyberpunk game, hacking may open doors, disable security, expose secrets, manipulate devices or redirect automated systems. The important feature is not the presence of a minigame labeled “hack.” It is that data and connected infrastructure affect ordinary power relationships. A character who can alter a camera feed or access a corporation’s records can challenge authority without matching it physically.
Weapons and systems that shape play
Advanced weapons, drones, targeting systems and upgrade trees can express the same theme. When skills, perks or equipment let players specialize, technology becomes a statement about identity: the protagonist is assembled through choices about what to install, learn or sacrifice. The strongest examples make those systems matter outside combat, affecting dialogue, exploration, employment or relationships.
Power is concentrated, and technology does not distribute itself fairly
The social half of cyberpunk explains why the technology feels dangerous. Corporations, security contractors, wealthy families or state agencies often control the networks, patents, housing and jobs on which everyone depends. Their influence can be legal, extralegal or so extensive that the distinction no longer matters.

Corporate rule and institutional reach
CD PROJEKT RED described Cyberpunk 2077’s setting as a “corporate-ruled future.” That phrase captures a recurring arrangement: private organizations exercise authority normally associated with governments, while individuals negotiate contracts, debt and surveillance to survive. A corporation in a cyberpunk game need not be cartoonishly evil. Its importance comes from the asymmetry between an institution that can rewrite a neighborhood and a person who can barely contest a contract.
Stratification and exploitation
Look for differences in healthcare, housing, security, education and access to upgrades. A polished district may coexist with informal markets and unsafe outskirts. Workers may accept hazardous modifications because the alternative is unemployment; residents may sell personal data for food or shelter. These details turn inequality from background lore into a condition that shapes missions and choices.
Limited agency is part of the conflict
Cyberpunk protagonists often have room to act but not enough power to control the whole system. The player may choose allies, contracts or methods while larger institutions absorb, punish or exploit those decisions. Agency is therefore measured by consequences, not by whether a menu offers many options. A choice that changes who benefits, who is sacrificed or what information becomes public can express the genre more clearly than a dozen cosmetic upgrades.
The setting makes the contradiction visible
Cyberpunk worlds commonly use dense future cities because vertical, crowded environments let wealth and deprivation appear in the same frame. Corporate towers, advertising screens and automated transport can rise above improvised housing, dangerous streets and neglected industrial zones.
Vertical cities and contested space
A convincing city has layers of access. Elevators, checkpoints, private clubs and restricted networks show who is allowed to move upward. Markets, transit hubs and street clinics show how people excluded from official prosperity build their own economies. Missions feel cyberpunk when the player crosses these boundaries and sees that they are enforced by money, data and violence as much as by walls.

Corporate districts versus the margins
The official Cyberpunk 2077 site contrasts the high rises of Corpo Plaza with the Badlands outskirts. That contrast is a representative setting device: a concentrated center of wealth is placed beside spaces where infrastructure is thin and survival is improvised. PlayStation describes Night City as obsessed with power, glamour and body modification, reinforcing how status is performed through both architecture and altered bodies.

Danger is social, not merely atmospheric
Dark streets and rain can establish mood, but atmosphere alone does not create a cyberpunk setting. Ask what makes a street dangerous. Is it an automated security zone, a predatory employer, a gang protecting an informal service, or a city that has abandoned the area? Specific causes connect scenery to the world’s political and economic structure.
Human identity and agency are at stake
When technology can replace organs, copy memories, predict behavior or store a person’s identity as data, the genre can question what counts as human. These questions need not be answered with a single philosophical speech; they can emerge through mechanics and consequences.
Who controls a person’s body?
Ownership becomes ambiguous when an implant is financed, remotely updated or fitted with restrictions. A game can ask whether bodily autonomy survives when an employer supplies the hardware or a manufacturer controls the software. The issue is especially powerful when players decide between a safer standard component and a more capable modification that carries debt, surveillance or physical risk.

Who controls a person’s data?
Biometric records, memories, messages and behavioral predictions can function like a second body. A story may treat a stolen identity, manipulated memory or exposed medical file as a violation comparable to physical harm. Hacking then becomes not just a tool for opening doors but a struggle over personhood.
What does progress mean?
Cyberpunk is rarely a simple warning that all technology is bad. Medical advances may save lives; network access may let marginalized communities organize; a modification may help someone work or defend themselves. The tension comes from distribution and control. Progress that increases capability while concentrating ownership creates the genre’s characteristic unease.
Gameplay features that often signal cyberpunk
Story and setting establish the premise, but interactive systems show whether the player actually inhabits it. Common mechanics include:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Build-driven augmentation: implants, perks or skill trees let players assemble a body and specialty rather than use a fixed hero.
- Network manipulation: hacking cameras, doors, weapons, vehicles or databases creates noncombat routes and makes infrastructure part of the play space.
- Choice under pressure: contracts, alliances and personal loyalties force trade-offs between survival, profit and solidarity.
- Layered economies: money, reputation, debt, black-market access or scarce medical resources make inequality mechanically legible.
- Multiple approaches: stealth, negotiation, technical expertise and direct violence let players express different relationships to power.
None of these systems is mandatory. A narrative adventure with no upgrade tree can still be cyberpunk if it examines technology and power. Conversely, a shooter with futuristic guns may be science fiction without being cyberpunk when social inequality and human consequences are absent.
Why visual style helps—but cannot carry the definition
Neon signage, reflective streets, saturated advertisements, dense typography and electronic music are efficient visual signals. They immediately tell players that the world is technologically advanced and culturally compressed. Designers also use visual contrast: immaculate corporate interiors beside overcrowded markets, or polished synthetic bodies beside damaged organic ones.
Style becomes meaningful when it reveals a relationship. An advertisement should show who is being targeted, a billboard should indicate who owns the message, and a luxury tower should cast a literal or metaphorical shadow over the people below. If the same neon could be moved into a wealthy science-fiction city without changing the story’s conflicts, it is probably serving as decoration rather than cyberpunk world-building.
A practical framework for judging any game
The following questions provide an editorial framework, not a published scoring system. Consider the whole game rather than awarding points mechanically.
| Dimension | Questions to ask | Strong cyberpunk signal |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | How deeply do implants, networks, automation or advanced weapons affect daily life? | Technology changes bodies, work, access and survival, not just combat spectacle. |
| Power | Who owns the systems, and who is exposed to their risks? | Corporations or other institutions hold disproportionate influence over ordinary people. |
| Inequality | Can players see different living conditions and unequal access? | Wealth, security and healthcare vary sharply between districts or groups. |
| Setting | Does the environment make social hierarchy legible? | Dense urban spaces connect glamorous centers with neglected or improvised margins. |
| Identity | Does modification or data challenge ideas of self and autonomy? | Choices about bodies, memories or information have personal and ethical consequences. |
| Agency | Can players alter relationships with the systems around them? | Choices and playstyles change who benefits, who is harmed or what becomes possible. |
A game does not need a strong result in every row. The framework helps distinguish a genuinely cyberpunk work from one that borrows only its surface imagery.

Cyberpunk 2077 as a representative example
Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrates several of these conventions without becoming a template that every game must copy. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as an open-world, narrative-driven role-playing game set in the universe of the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop role-playing system. Its official game material presents Night City as a dark future shaped by player choices, hacking, skills, weapons and body-enhancing implants.

Those elements connect the individual and the system. Implants and perks let a player shape a character’s capabilities; hacking makes networked infrastructure actionable; weapons and skills support distinct approaches; and choices determine how the protagonist navigates institutions and personal relationships. The setting’s contrast between corporate high rises and the Badlands outskirts gives the social divide a physical form.
Night City’s fixation on power, glamour and body modification also illustrates why aesthetics and themes work best together. The city looks advanced because technology is everywhere, but its cyberpunk character comes from the question of who can buy that advancement, who must sell access to it and what remains of a person’s autonomy after the upgrade.
Common misconceptions
“Any neon game is cyberpunk.”
Neon is a visual vocabulary, not a complete genre. Without unequal power, technological consequences or a human-scale conflict, a neon-lit game may simply be stylish science fiction.
“Cyberpunk must be set in a giant city.”
Cities are common because they display hierarchy efficiently, but a smaller settlement, rural network or isolated facility can support cyberpunk themes if technology and concentrated power shape daily life there.
“Cyberpunk means technology is always the villain.”
The genre is more interested in ownership and consequences than in condemning invention itself. A medical implant can be liberating and exploitative at the same time, depending on who controls it and who can access it.
“The protagonist must be a hacker.”
Hackers are a familiar viewpoint, but a courier, mercenary, journalist, mechanic or corporate employee can reveal the same conflicts. What matters is the character’s position within systems of technology and power.
A quick checklist for players and critics
When deciding whether a game is cyberpunk, ask:
- Does advanced technology alter ordinary bodies, jobs or relationships?
- Are power and ownership concentrated in corporations, states or other institutions?
- Can the player see meaningful differences between wealthy and precarious communities?
- Does the setting connect its visual style to social conditions?
- Do body modification, data or automation raise questions about identity and consent?
- Do player choices reveal who gains control and who pays the cost?
If the answers are mostly yes, the game is engaging with cyberpunk’s central concerns even if it omits a familiar image. If the answers are mostly no, it may be borrowing the aesthetic while belonging more comfortably to another science-fiction tradition.
