If you can’t build in Fortnite, first check whether your current mode or Creative island allows building. If it does, troubleshoot the specific failure: PC players using a controller should turn off Lock Input Method as Mouse; if you can’t enter build mode, reset conflicting keybinds. If the problem occurs on just one Creative island, its settings may be responsible.
1. Check whether building is allowed in your mode or island
Building availability depends on the mode or island. Epic’s UEFN documentation explains that island build-mode settings control whether players can build. Creative island settings can also limit building resources, which may matter if build mode opens but you can’t place pieces. See Epic’s island settings documentation and its Fortnite building documentation.
If building fails only on one Creative island, try another island or a mode you know supports building. If other players on that island have the same issue, ask the creator whether building is enabled or restricted. Epic’s published documentation does not provide a complete mode-by-mode list here, so don’t assume that every Fortnite mode permits building.
2. On PC with a controller, turn off “Lock Input Method as Mouse”
Epic documents this setting as a fix for the specific case of being unable to build in Fortnite on PC while using a controller. The setting can interfere with controller input being recognized as expected.

- Works with Nintendo Switch 2. C button not available
- Bonus Fortnite virtual item included (Googly Glider)
- Wireless controller with Bluetooth 5.0 technology
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery: Up to 30 hours per charge*
- Two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons
- Launch Fortnite and open Settings.
- Select Mouse and Keyboard.
- Scroll to Lock Input Method as Mouse and switch it OFF.
- Return to the game and test building. Follow Epic’s PC-controller instructions if you need the official support page.
This is a targeted PC-and-controller fix, not an established solution for keyboard users, consoles, or mobile.
3. If you can’t switch into build mode, reset keybinds
Epic identifies a possible conflict: the key used to switch to build mode may also be assigned to a building piece. When those actions conflict, you may be unable to enter build mode. Epic’s support page recommends resetting keybinds while it investigates the issue; it does not state a version or resolution date. Read Epic’s “Why can’t I switch to build mode in Fortnite?” support article.

For keyboard controls, Epic’s keybind instructions point to Settings > Keyboard Controls > Creative Input Actions. Review the bindings there or reset them, then test whether you can switch modes. The exact controls and menu availability may vary by platform; the keyboard-controls path is not a universal path for every device. See Epic’s keybind help page.
4. If the issue is limited to one Creative island
A community forum report described players with Simple Build enabled being unable to open the build menu or place builds on the specific island 1v1 Build Fight [Rezon] (island code 7835-3901-1999). The reported workaround was to turn Simple Build off, restart Fortnite, and rejoin that island. This is a player-reported, island-specific workaround—not an official general fix. The forum reply and automatic closure do not establish that the issue is currently fixed. See the original community report.

5. Identify what is failing before you contact support
If the checks above do not help, there is no single verified fix for every case. Give Epic Support enough detail to distinguish an island restriction from an input or keybind problem:
- Your platform and input device (for example, PC with controller or keyboard).
- The mode or island where the issue occurs, and whether it happens elsewhere.
- Whether you cannot enter build mode, or build mode opens but pieces will not place.
- What happens when you press the build-mode or building-piece input.
These details make it clearer whether the next step concerns island rules, controller input, or conflicting bindings.
