To stream 4K at 60 frames per second from a Windows 11 PC to YouTube Live, use OBS or another encoder, select a supported hardware encoder, and configure a 3840×2160, 60 fps RTMPS feed with constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264. Those are video bitrates, not recommended internet-plan speeds: your PC and connection must both sustain the stream reliably. This guide covers the setup and how to test it from your own location in India.
Check whether your PC and connection are suitable
A Windows 11 PC is not automatically capable of encoding 4K/60. Available encoder options depend on its GPU and other hardware, and performance varies by machine and workload. Before configuring OBS, check that the PC exposes a hardware encoder that supports your intended codec at 3840×2160 and 60 fps.
YouTube’s recommended 4K/60 video bitrate is 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264. YouTube lists lower minimums—10 Mbps for AV1/HEVC and 14 Mbps for H.264—but these are ingestion minimums, not safe target speeds for an internet connection or guarantees of stable streaming. The connection needs sustained upload headroom beyond the configured video bitrate for audio, protocol overhead, and normal variation. Test the actual connection you will use; an advertised plan rate or a single speed-test result does not establish that it can sustain a live stream. YouTube advises choosing quality that is reliable for your connection and testing upload bitrate. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations were accessed in 2026.
In India, results depend on your provider, plan, local network, and time of day. The YouTube guidance does not establish a universal upload-speed guarantee for India, so verify your own route and connection under realistic conditions.

Set up YouTube Live and get a stream key
- Enable live streaming in YouTube. If this is your first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. Complete this before the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Find the stream key in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address; treat it as a secret and do not publish or share it. See YouTube’s stream settings guide.
- Keep the stream key available for OBS. You will enter it in OBS’s stream settings. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised key.
Configure OBS for a 4K/60 YouTube stream
OBS is a free, open-source encoder. The exact names and availability of encoder options can vary with OBS version and installed hardware. YouTube’s supported live settings include RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the hardware encoder that supports your chosen codec and resolution; do not assume a software encoder can sustain 4K/60 on your PC.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, choose the available RTMPS option if shown, and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. OBS interface labels may vary by version.
- Choose the encoder and output bitrate. In Settings → Output, use the supported hardware encoder and set rate control to CBR. Set the video bitrate to 35,000 Kbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 50,000 Kbps for H.264, if your encoder supports that combination. YouTube’s respective minimums are 10,000 and 14,000 Kbps; do not treat those minimums as recommended connection speeds.
- Set the keyframe interval. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and specifies that it must not exceed 4 seconds.
- Set the video canvas and frame rate. In OBS, use Settings → Video and set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Select 60 fps in the frame-rate control; the exact control layout depends on OBS version.
- Set SDR color and audio. For a standard SDR stream, use Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. YouTube supports AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Confirm the OBS output and audio settings match the intended stream.
- Start a private or unlisted test, then check stream health. Include audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, and check for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, or encoder overload before relying on the setup for an event.
For 4K/2160, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; the stream is optimized for quality at normal latency. If fast viewer interaction is essential, consider a lower resolution rather than expecting an encoder setting to remove the 4K latency tradeoff. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Test the real workload and network route
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” A static desktop or short speed test may not reveal issues that appear during a longer, more demanding stream.
- Run the test on the same PC, network, and location you will use for the live stream.
- Test during a time when your home or office connection is likely to be used normally, and watch whether the upload rate remains steady.
- Monitor OBS for dropped frames or encoder overload, and Live Control Room for stream-health warnings.
- If practical, test over Ethernet. A Cat6 cable is optional, not a YouTube requirement; it can provide a wired local connection for testing but does not increase your ISP plan rate or guarantee a stable route to YouTube.
If the test is unstable, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. YouTube’s recommendations for 1440p/60 are 24 Mbps for AV1/HEVC and 34 Mbps for H.264; for 1080p/60 they are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps, respectively. These provide practical step-down settings when your PC or connection cannot sustain 4K/60. YouTube’s current encoder table lists the figures.

Use HDR only if the full pipeline supports it
A 4K source is not necessarily HDR. For ordinary SDR, use the Rec. 709, 8-bit settings described above. HDR is a separate workflow: YouTube’s live HDR guidance supports HEVC, and its OBS instructions specify OBS 30.1 or later, an HDR source, hardware HEVC encoding, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. Follow the exact prerequisites only if your source and hardware support them. YouTube notes that the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Its Windows 11 instructions also describe enabling Windows HDR with an HDR monitor even when the source is not HDR by using Auto HDR; that does not make ordinary footage native HDR. OBS does not show the codec or hardware encoder you expected
The available encoders depend on the installed device and its supported hardware. Check the encoder options actually exposed by OBS. If the PC cannot encode the chosen codec at 4K/60, try another supported hardware encoder or step down the resolution or frame rate.

Live Control Room reports unstable stream health or dropped frames
The upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate, or it may fluctuate. Test again on the intended network, preferably with a wired local connection if practical, and reduce bitrate or quality until the stream is stable.
The encoder is overloaded
The PC may not be sustaining the selected encoding workload. Select a supported hardware encoder if available, close unnecessary workloads, or reduce resolution or frame rate. A higher bitrate alone will not fix an encoding-capacity problem.

The stream key is rejected or the stream does not arrive
Check that OBS uses the stream key for the correct YouTube stream and that the key has not been replaced. Copy it again from Live Control Room without sharing it publicly. If you have exposed it, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
The first live stream is not available yet
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable streaming in advance rather than troubleshooting OBS while waiting for activation. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Respect copyright and YouTube rules for recorded video
Streaming a recording as a live feed does not remove copyright obligations or make reused material original. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music and other material audible in the recording. Review YouTube’s current policies and the permissions for any third-party content before going live. Do not assume that a video being available online means it is cleared for your stream.
