Keep OBS sending to the same YouTube Live event, and switch the lesson video inside OBS. For automatic playback, use an OBS VLC Video Source playlist; for choosing lessons yourself, use separate media sources or scenes. Keep the encoder output connected throughout, and rehearse the exact setup privately or as an unlisted stream before using it live.
How the lesson change works
YouTube receives a continuous feed from an encoder such as OBS. The encoder sends that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. To change lessons without ending the event, leave the encoder output running and change the media it sends.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” The method here is therefore encoder-side playback and switching—not a YouTube Live Control Room feature that rotates recorded lessons. A continuous event is the goal, but no official guidance guarantees a glitch-free transition for every setup, so test yours first. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Choose how to rotate lessons
Automatic playback in a set order
Use an OBS VLC Video Source when you want lessons to play one after another without selecting each one manually. VLC must be installed for this source to be available in OBS.

- Install VLC, then restart or check OBS for the VLC Video Source option.
- In the OBS scene that will remain on air, add a VLC Video Source and add the recorded lesson files to its playlist.
- Turn shuffle off if the lessons must play in a predictable order. Choose whether Loop Playlist should be on; turn it on only if playback should return to the first lesson after the final file.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS offers options that stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playback when a source is hidden. Choose the behavior that fits how you use scenes, then verify that playback resumes at the intended point.
- Start a private or unlisted test event. Confirm the image and sound, then observe the transition from one file to the next before using the setup for a real lesson stream.

Manual selection of the next lesson
For operator-controlled playback, add each lesson as its own OBS Media Source, or put each lesson in a separate scene. When it is time to change lessons, switch the visible source or scene while leaving the encoder output connected. Rehearse the switches: OBS notes that a media source may reload when it becomes visible, which can briefly leave no lesson source on screen.

Scheduled playback on dedicated hardware
YouTube’s verified encoder list describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder and says its PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media for streaming directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware option, not a requirement for the OBS workflow. Set up the event and rehearse the transition
- Check that the YouTube channel is eligible to live stream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current channel and guidance before scheduling. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Set up the encoder and event ahead of time. Keep the same YouTube event and encoder connection in place as lessons change; do not stop the encoder feed between files or scene switches if the event must remain live.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm both picture and audio before the audience arrives. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and leaving upload-bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips specify 20% as recommended. YouTube: Live streaming tips
- Run through the complete playlist or planned scene changes, including the final lesson and any loop back to the start. Confirm that the chosen source visibility behavior does not restart or pause a lesson unexpectedly.
Plan for the archive and lesson replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need a reliable replay, record a local backup as well rather than relying only on the automatic archive. YouTube: Archive live streams
