Consider local files or security software
A Blizzard forum support reply about an update and Scan and Repair failure identifies third-party software, including antivirus, and corrupted local Battle.net or game files as possible causes. It suggests removing the game’s datacascindices folder from the Overwatch installation and then running Scan and Repair. Before deleting anything, confirm that you are in the correct Overwatch installation folder; do not remove a similarly named folder from another location. If Scan and Repair fails, or Overwatch freezes at startup
Run Scan and Repair once
In the Battle.net desktop app, open Overwatch, select the game options or cogwheel menu, and choose Scan and Repair. Let the operation finish before launching the game again. A Blizzard support reply recommends this for a startup freeze after an update. In that same thread, the player said the scan found no problems but the freeze persisted. Escalate cautiously if repair changes nothing
One older support reply in that thread describes uninstalling and reinstalling the game, including checking for leftover files. Treat full removal as a later step, after less invasive repair. Before deleting leftovers, inspect them and preserve anything personal or locally saved that you want to keep; do not assume every file in an Overwatch-related folder is disposable.

If Battle.net says Play but the game never opens
A Blizzard forum response to a February 2025 launch problem lists several possible troubleshooting tracks: update Windows and graphics drivers, reset in-game options, check whether security software is interfering with the login module, remove Battle.net Tools data so it can rebuild, repair the game, and close background applications. These are options from one case, not a diagnosis that every player needs to perform every step. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it affected the problem. If the game still will not load, gather a DxDiag or MSInfo report and share it with Blizzard support or the appropriate support community. These reports can help narrow down PC-specific causes that cannot be identified from the launch symptom alone. If the game is stuck on an in-game “Downloading update” screen
A 2023 support reply discussing an in-game “Downloading update” screen says the earlier bug covered in that thread had been resolved months before the reply. For a new occurrence, the responder considered a local client, system, or connection issue more likely, while noting that system and connection details were needed to narrow it down. Check network changes only after simpler steps
The same response suggests checking advanced router or firewall features such as QoS, SIP ALG, ASUS RoG settings, and security-firewall features on some ISP modems. The response also mentions power-cycling network devices and, as a last resort, a factory reset. A factory reset can erase your network configuration and disrupt other connected devices, so do not use it as a routine first step. If you cannot restore your settings, ask the device maker or ISP for help before resetting.
Protect local settings and highlights before clearing data
Some troubleshooting suggestions remove app data or reset game options. A Blizzard support response lists clearing Battle.net app data, resetting in-game options, repairing the client, trying selective startup or a new administrator account, and submitting an MSInfo report if the issue remains. These steps can affect local configuration, and selective startup or account changes are Windows-specific. Follow current Blizzard guidance and make sure you understand which data a step will remove before proceeding.

When to stop troubleshooting and ask for help
If the symptom survives the least invasive steps for its stage, avoid cycling through unrelated deletions and resets. Contact Blizzard support or use its troubleshooting community with the exact error text, the stage where the process stops, what you already tried, and a DxDiag or MSInfo report when requested. Include relevant details about recent changes to the PC or network. That information is more useful for narrowing a specific cause than the phrase “Overwatch won’t launch” on its own.
