For portable play, buy a Switch 2–fitted case and screen protector first. If your digital library needs more room, choose a microSD Express card—not a standard microSD card. A second controller is optional, while an extra dock or AC adapter is useful mainly for a specific setup or as a replacement.
Which Switch 2 accessories are worth buying first?
Start with how you use the console. A case and correctly sized screen protector protect it when you carry it; storage matters when you need more room for digital games; a second controller is for players who want another pad or prefer a full-size controller. The console package already includes a dock and an AC adapter, so most buyers do not need to purchase either again.

These are practical fit choices, not a tested ranking. The right first purchase depends on portability, storage needs, and whether you already own compatible gear.
What case and screen protector fit Switch 2?
Buy accessories that explicitly identify Nintendo Switch 2 as the compatible model. The console’s screen is not the same fit as the original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite: Nintendo says protectors for those models will not fit Switch 2. As Nintendo puts it, “Screen protectors are not one-size-fits-all.” Check Nintendo’s screen-protector guidance and verify the model on the product listing before ordering.

Nintendo sells a Switch 2 carrying case bundled with a screen protector and cleaning cloth. Its standard case holds up to six game cards. A licensed PowerA case listing offers another example, with padded screen protection and a removable holder for nine game cards and two microSD Express cards; those are the listed product’s storage specifications, not a general standard. Nintendo says only officially licensed products have been evaluated by Nintendo for compatibility and quality. Regardless of brand, confirm Switch 2 fit rather than relying on a generic “Switch” label.

Do you need a microSD Express card?
Only buy one if you need expanded storage for Switch 2 games. The console accepts microSD Express cards; a regular microSD card from an original Switch is not a substitute for that purpose. Nintendo’s accessories page states: “Please note: Nintendo Switch™ 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Nintendo identifies a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card as one option, but this is an example, not a claim that it is the best value or currently in stock.
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB and requires an internet system update the first time a card is used. A conventional microSD card can still be used to view captured screenshots and videos, but not to save or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. Check Nintendo’s storage-card compatibility details before buying.

Should you buy a Switch 2 Pro Controller?
It is a preference upgrade, not a must-have for every owner. Consider it if you prefer a full-size controller, want another controller for multiplayer, or will use its Switch 2-specific controls. Nintendo lists HD rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo functionality, a capture button, a headset jack, the C button, and remappable GL/GR buttons for the Switch 2 Pro Controller. If you already have the original Switch Pro Controller, it pairs wirelessly with Switch 2, so you may not need to replace it just to have a working pad. Choose the new model if its additional controls or listed features matter to you. Nintendo’s accessory-compatibility guidance covers the older controller.

Which original Switch accessories still work?
Compatibility depends on the item. Some older accessories remain useful, but physical fit and functions may differ. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says:
- Original Joy-Con: They can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2. To charge them, use an original Switch console or a compatible charging accessory.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: It pairs wirelessly and can charge through a USB connection on the Switch 2 dock.
- Original Switch dock: It is incompatible with Switch 2.
- Original Joy-Con strap: It is incompatible when used with Joy-Con 2.
- Original Switch AC adapter: It can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power the console in TV mode.
Check Nintendo’s full compatibility information for the accessory you own rather than assuming that all original Switch gear either works or fails as a group.

When does an extra dock or adapter make sense?
Extra dock
Consider an additional Switch 2 dock set if you regularly move between TVs and want to leave a dock connected at each location, or if the included dock needs replacing. The console package includes one, and the original Switch dock is not compatible. Nintendo describes its dock set as a second-TV or replacement option.
Extra AC adapter
An additional Switch 2 adapter is a convenience purchase for a second charging spot or a replacement, not a basic requirement for a new console. Nintendo lists it as a replacement for the adapter included with Switch 2. The original Switch adapter can charge the console directly, but is not suitable for TV mode. A practical buying order
- If you carry the console: get a case made for Switch 2 and, if desired, a Switch 2-specific screen protector.
- If your digital library needs more space: buy a microSD Express card, checking the format and capacity before purchase.
- If you want another or different-feeling controller: compare the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s controls with the original Pro Controller you may already own.
- Only add a dock or adapter for a second setup, replacement, or charging convenience. The console package includes both a dock and an adapter.
