Palworld usually shows the character-creation screen after a save identity mismatch, not because your world was intentionally wiped. The most common trigger is moving a save between co-op, Windows dedicated-server, Linux dedicated-server, or SteamCMD environments whose player GUIDs do not match. A damaged player file and a known dedicated-server bug are other possibilities.

Stop before creating a permanent replacement character. Copy the entire save, determine which server type is involved, and then use the recovery path for that environment. A GUID remap can restore the original character, inventory, and Pals; deleting player data can leave the map intact but may permanently remove those personal assets.

Why Palworld asks you to create a new character
The character is stored separately from the world and is associated with a player identifier, commonly called a GUID. During a migration, the destination server can assign a different identifier to the same person. When that identifier does not match the one embedded in the old player save, the server has no matching character to load and treats the login as a first-time player.
Server migration changed the player GUID
xNul’s Host Save Fix documentation explains that Palworld save files differ by server type. Co-op-to-dedicated moves and transfers between Windows and Linux dedicated servers are specifically affected cases. A SteamCMD server or a move to another host can produce the same symptom if the destination writes a new player ID.

In this situation, the world may still contain your buildings, map exploration, bases, and captured Pals assigned to the old character record. The new-character prompt does not prove that those records have been erased; it means the server cannot connect them to your current ID.
The player file is damaged
A corrupted player file can also prevent the server from loading the character. Community troubleshooting describes removing the damaged file so the user can create a replacement, but that fallback can discard the affected character’s inventory and Pals while leaving the shared world map available.

A Steam discussion dated December 23, 2024 reproduced a patch notice stating that a fix had been released for a v0.4.11 dedicated-server bug that caused player data to disappear. Reports in the same discussion indicate that some players continued to experience the problem, so installing that patch is sensible but is not a guaranteed restoration.
An update normally should not require a new character
In an Xbox Wire update preview dated June 12, 2024, the publisher described the version as fully compatible with existing saves and said players could continue with their collected and leveled Pals. That compatibility statement makes an unexpected new-character prompt more consistent with a save, identity, or server problem than with an update deliberately resetting every character.

Do these things before attempting recovery
- Stop the server or exit the game. Do not play on the temporary character, overwrite files, or allow automatic synchronization to replace the older save while you investigate.
- Make a complete copy. Duplicate the local or server save, including the world data, player data, and any backup folders. Keep the untouched copy on separate storage. The Host Save Fix README calls the utility experimental and warns users to back up because data loss is possible.
- Identify the save environment. Record whether the character came from single-player/co-op, a Windows dedicated server, a Linux dedicated server, or a SteamCMD/different-host installation. The remedy depends on this distinction.
- Record what still exists. Note whether the world opens, whether other players can load their characters, whether your map discoveries and bases remain, and whether the prompt appeared immediately after a migration or update.
- Confirm administrative access. A local rollback needs access to the original save. A dedicated-server GUID repair normally requires access to the server’s save and Players folder, plus permission to stop and restart the service.
Choose the recovery method that fits your case

Restore a local or co-op character from an earlier save
This route is for a save that still exists on your PC or console-linked installation and for which you have an earlier world backup. It is not the right procedure for a server that has already generated a destination GUID; use the dedicated-server procedure below in that case.
Use a disposable destination save
- Keep the untouched backup outside the active save directory.
- Launch Palworld and create a temporary new world and character. The purpose is to let the game generate a complete, valid destination structure; do not spend time progressing this character.
- Return to the title screen and close the game so no files remain open.
- Locate the newly created world’s folder and compare it with the backed-up world. Preserve the temporary folder until the replacement has been tested.
Copy the earlier world and character data
A Steam community report describes copying the earlier world and character data onto the newly created save. Work from a duplicate, not the only backup. Copy the matching files as a set rather than mixing a world from one point in time with a player file from an unrelated point, unless the backup structure requires that choice.

- Rename or move the temporary destination folder so it can be restored if the test fails.
- Copy the earlier world files into the destination save location.
- Copy the corresponding earlier character data into the same save set.
- Start the game and check the character, inventory, Pals, bases, and map before making any new progress.
- If the newest backup still produces the prompt, test an older backup copy. The community report found that an earlier backup could restore the character more reliably than the newest one in some cases.
Keep every original backup until the recovered character has loaded successfully on more than one launch. If the world opens but the character is still missing, stop and revert the test copy instead of repeatedly creating replacements.
Repair a co-op or dedicated-server migration with a GUID remap
When the old character worked in co-op or on the previous dedicated server and vanished after moving, a GUID mismatch is the leading explanation. The Host Save Fix documentation describes a process that gives the destination server a temporary player ID, then applies that new ID to the old player save.

Prepare the destination server
- Copy the old save to the new server using the server’s normal save-transfer procedure.
- Start the destination server and have the affected player join.
- Allow the player to create a temporary character. This is intentional: it causes the new server to write the destination GUID that must be mapped to the old data.
- Leave the server and stop it cleanly. Do not continue playing on the temporary character.
- Make another full backup of the destination save before changing any files.
Run Host Save Fix
xNul’s documentation provides both a graphical interface and a script-based workflow. It also lists the required Python dependencies and command parameters. Follow the README for the version you download rather than guessing filenames or arguments, because the save layout and tool options can change.
- Open the tool against the backed-up destination save.
- Identify the old player save and the newly created destination player record.
- Supply the old and new GUID values as directed by the tool’s GUI or script instructions.
- Apply the remap to a working copy, never to the only backup.
- Place the repaired save back on the server, start it, and have the affected player join.
- Verify the character level, inventory, Pals, equipment, map discoveries, and base ownership before allowing normal play.
The documented utility is experimental. A wrong player selection or an interrupted write can damage the save, which is why two separate backups and a reversible test copy are essential. If several players migrated, repair one account at a time and test between changes so an error can be isolated.
What a successful remap looks like
- The affected account loads directly into the old character rather than the creation screen.
- Inventory and equipment match the point represented by the old save.
- Captured Pals assigned to that character are present.
- World structures and map progress remain available.
- Other players can still join and load their own characters.
If the character loads but a specific item, Pal, or structure is missing, stop before saving further progress. That result can indicate that the wrong backup or player record was selected, not that another destructive reset is needed.
Handle a possibly corrupted player file
Use this branch only when the save is not merely a server-type migration or when the player record itself fails while other accounts work normally. The community fallback is destructive enough that it should be treated as a last resort.

Isolate the affected account
- Stop the dedicated server and preserve the complete backup.
- Identify the affected player’s file in the server’s player-data area. Do not remove the entire world or Players folder.
- Move the suspected file to a quarantine folder instead of deleting it. Keep its original name and timestamp.
- Restart the server and let the affected player create a replacement character.
- Stop the server again and record the new save ID generated for that replacement.
Decide whether restoration is possible
With the new ID identified, compare it with the quarantined file and the backed-up player data. Restore only the appropriate backed-up record to a test copy, then check whether the server accepts it. If the file is genuinely corrupt, a clean replacement may be the only way to re-enter the world.
This route can preserve the shared world map while losing the old character’s inventory and Pals. Do not promise a complete recovery from a damaged file; the community instructions explicitly warn about that loss. If the affected Pals or items are more valuable than immediate access, stop and seek support before committing the replacement.

If the prompt first appeared while running a v0.4.11 dedicated server, record the server build and update it through the host’s normal maintenance process. The December 23, 2024 Steam discussion reproduced a notice that a patch addressed disappearing player data.
- Stop the server and back up its current save.
- Confirm the installed build and compare it with the available dedicated-server update.
- Apply the update while the save remains backed up.
- Start the server and test the affected account.
- If the prompt remains, return to the backup and use the migration or corruption workflow rather than repeatedly creating new characters.
The reports attached to the patch discussion show that the update did not resolve every user’s problem. Treat it as a compatibility check, not as a substitute for a save restore or GUID remap.

Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Creating several permanent characters: each login can write another player record and make it harder to identify the original.
- Letting an automatic sync run: a newer empty save can replace the older local copy before you compare them.
- Deleting instead of moving files: quarantine preserves a path back; deletion may not.
- Mixing save points: a world from one backup and a character from another can produce missing ownership, rollback, or further mismatch.
- Editing while the server is running: the process can rewrite your changes or leave partially written data.
- Assuming every migration is identical: co-op, Windows, Linux, and SteamCMD saves can use different identity data and require different handling.
- Testing only the map: an intact map does not prove that inventory, Pals, or character ownership survived.
Prevent the prompt during a future server move
Make a migration checklist
- Stop the source server cleanly and archive the complete save.
- Keep a second copy that will never be edited during testing.
- Note the source server type, destination server type, game build, and host.
- Transfer the save before inviting players to make permanent progress.
- Have each player create only the temporary destination character required to generate a new GUID.
- Perform the remap on a copy, then test character, inventory, Pals, map, and bases.
- Keep the source backup until every player has confirmed a successful login.
Use staged backups
Retain at least one pre-migration copy and one post-migration copy. Label them with the date, server type, and build so an older working state can be selected quickly. A backup that cannot be identified or restored is not a useful recovery plan.

Escalate when the world and player records cannot be matched, the save fails after a documented remap, or a patch appears to have removed data without a usable backup. Steam lists Pocketpair as Palworld’s developer and publisher and provides Pocketpair support, including [email protected].
Include the platform, server type, source and destination builds, the time the character disappeared, whether other players are affected, and which backups remain. Do not send your only save; retain an untouched copy and provide files only through the support channel’s instructions.
