If Phasmophobia voice chat is not working, first identify whether teammates cannot hear you or the game is not recognizing spoken commands. On PC, check the Windows microphone selection; on console, confirm that a compatible microphone is connected and that Voice Recognition Mode is set to Voice. If those checks look right, the issue may be a game bug rather than your setup.
First, identify what is failing
Phasmophobia voice chat and in-game voice recognition are related but distinct. Voice chat lets teammates hear you; voice recognition lets the game interpret speech for features such as the Spirit Box and cursed possessions. A microphone problem with one does not automatically mean the other is broken.

Fix Phasmophobia voice chat on PC
Match the Windows default microphone to the one you intend to use
For PC players using the game’s “Voice” setting, Kinetic Games advises making sure the PC’s default microphone matches the microphone specified in Windows settings. Check the Windows sound input selection, choose the intended microphone as the default, then test the game again. The developer gave this guidance in its Phasmophobia Hotfix v0.17.1.5 notes.

If voice recognition stopped after changing modes
Kinetic Games later fixed an issue that could stop voice recognition from working after switching from “Voice” to “System.” If your problem began after changing that setting, select the mode you want again and restart or re-enter the game as a basic diagnostic step. The restart is troubleshooting advice, not a step specified in the patch note. The fix is recorded in the v0.18.0.0 patch notes.
Fix voice recognition on Xbox
- Connect a compatible headset to the controller’s audio jack, or use a wireless headset if it is supported by your console.
- Open the in-game journal, go to Game Options, and set “Voice Recognition Mode” to “Voice.”
- If the microphone disconnected during play, reconnect it and check the mode again. The game guide says Phasmophobia defaults to TEXT when the microphone disconnects, until it is reconnected.

Fix voice recognition on PlayStation or PS VR2
- On PS5, use the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone or connect another supported headset to the console. PS VR2 players can use the headset’s built-in microphone.
- In Phasmophobia’s journal, open Game Options and set “Voice Recognition Mode” to “Voice.”
- If spoken input is not recognized, check at the console level that the intended microphone is connected and selected.

Correct settings do not rule out a game-side issue. In its v0.17.1.4 notes, Kinetic Games acknowledged a period when players across platforms were experiencing voice recognition and voice chat problems and said a fix was being investigated. That statement describes the issue acknowledged at that update; it does not establish the status of current servers or later versions. The same notes warned that Windows 7/8 or another outdated Windows installation might need Windows Update and a restart after a security certificate update to the game’s voice servers. Treat that as version-specific historical guidance, not a universal requirement for current Windows installations. See the v0.17.1.4 patch notes.

Later notes document specific fixes: the PC microphone-selection guidance and Steam voice-recognition issue in v0.17.1.5, and the Voice-to-System switching issue in v0.18.0.0. These fixes show that some failures have been game defects, but they do not establish that every voice issue is fixed. Check the developer’s latest notices for your version before assuming the cause is your microphone.
When a microphone replacement might help
Consider another microphone only if your current one is missing, incompatible, disconnected, or faulty. Use an existing built-in mic where supported, or confirm that a headset’s wired or wireless connection works with your specific platform. Kinetic Games’ console guide provides supported connection options but does not recommend a particular headset model. New hardware will not fix a game-side bug.

If the problem persists, use the Kinetic Games Support Centre. The v0.17.1.4 notes direct players there for bug reports. Include:
